Almost ten long minutes later, Russell stood from the sofa and picked up the plate that had four chocolate biscuits, specially made by Jennifer.
He went upstairs and knocked on a door.
“Come in,” a deep voice came from inside.
Russell entered the room, and his dad had just come from his bath. Arnold had the habit of bathing three times a day unless his schedule was really busy. He believed bathing multiple times a day was the key to maintaining his good health. His phone rang, and it was Fredrick calling.
Even though Russell tried to talk, Arnold made him wait until he finished the call. “I’ll take care of it. You don’t worry.” He hung up.
“Mom told me to give you these,” Russell put the plate down on the bed. Though Jennifer hadn’t actually said that, she generally used to say ‘if you don’t want to eat, at least give them to your dad, and he’ll eat them.’
Russell picked up one biscuit. “One is enough for me. You can have the rest.” Russell also grabbed a biscuit and took a bite. As he slowly chewed, Arnold looked at him, “You didn’t come here just to give me biscuits, did you?”
“Regarding marriage…” Russell’s stomach was boiling, and he could feel the chocolate biscuit melting in his stomach as he spoke, “when were you going to tell me that Kyra is pregnant?”
Arnold was visibly surprised. He sat straight at once. “Who told you?” he asked in a sharp voice, demanding an answer. “Is it Jennifer?”
“It’s Kyra,” Russell’s reply startled him. “She told me about her pregnancy herself.”
“K-Kyra?” Arnold was left perplexed.
“She didn’t need to tell me anything, but she came all this way to give me such important information,” Russell added. “I respect her very much for that.”
“Great. So you have no problem marrying her then and saying to the world that her child is yours.”
“That’s not what I meant,” Russell quickly said, raising his voice. “Wait…” his frown deepened. “What did you just say? I should tell the world that her child is mine?”
“S-She didn’t tell you that?” Arnold felt a little stupid for slipping out such sensitive information at this moment.
Russell’s intestines knotted together. He thought Kyra was decent, but even she couldn’t reveal the whole truth. Russell felt like he was being played by everyone at this moment. It brought all kinds of emotions into his face, making him look miserable. Remembering his mother, he took a breath and calmed himself. “Dad, I respect you. You know that. Tell me to eat grass, and I’ll do it for you without questioning. But if you want me to say that someone else’s baby is mine…” he shakes his head dejectedly. His throat felt heavy. “I’m a man, Dad, not a fucking eununch.”
Arnold’s eyes filled with a substantial amount of surprise as this was probably the first time his son used the F-word before him.
“You can threaten me all you want, but I’m not marrying Kyra,” Russell’s voice was still sad rather than angry. “I’m sorry.” He walked away.
“Wait!” Arnold called for him, but his son didn’t stop. “Dammit.” Arnold squeezed the half-eaten biscuit in his hand and crushed it to pieces. A lot of his hopes were riding on this marriage, so he just couldn’t let it go because Russell wished so. He went out of his way to go outside and get to his son’s room.
Russell was packing his bags.
“What are you doing?” Arnold came up to him and pulled the clothes out of the bag. “Just do this one thing for us.”
“You mean… FOR YOU?”
Arnold forced out a laugh. “Yeah. I’m fine if you think of it that way. Just do this one thing for me, and I promise you… you’ll thank me afterward.”
Russell couldn’t believe what his father was saying. “Dad… I love Natasha, not Kyra! And there’s a limit I can’t cross. I can’t call someone else’s kid my own!”
“Aren’t you calling Jennifer your mom right now?” Arnold hit him with what he believed was a logical question.
“That’s different. You’re telling me to lie to the whole world about something so serious.”
“What’s the big deal?” Arnold reasoned, shrugging his shoulders. “If you marry her, the world will automatically think her child is yours.”
“The world isn’t that stupid, Dad, but all this doesn’t matter. Let’s say I agreed to marry Kyra now, and six months after marriage…” Russell’s eyes reddened, “Kyra will give birth to a child. What will Natasha then think of me? That I’ve screwed Kyra while I was dating her!”
“Tsk,” Arnold hissed, “don’t be stupid. Why would you care what happens to Natasha, or what she thinks of you after you married Kyra? Besides, didn’t Natasha refuse to marry you?”
Russell frowned. “Sorry. I can’t do it. Please give Kyra my apologies.”
Arnold slapped Russell, but Russell wasn’t shocked.
“Kill me if you want, but you can’t make me marry Kyra.”
“You little…” Arnold slapped Russell with the second hand so hard this time Russell fell on the bed.
Russell looked for a stick. He couldn’t find it, but then Jennifer walked in and gave him a long stick, which was the Dog Beating Staff Natasha had gifted to Russell on Halloween because Russell was a big fan of Wuxia novels.
“You seemed to have forgotten the old memories, but it’s okay. I'll bring them all back,” Arnold started beating Russell left and right with the Dog Beating Staff, but Russell made little to no noise.
Jennifer just amusedly watched while crunching on an apple.
By the time Arnold finished, Russell was bruised everywhere except his head, and he was bleeding from his arms and legs.
Arnold threw the stick aside. It took a few seconds to bring his breath back under control. “Take all his electronic gadgets and lock him up in this room,” he told Jennifer and walked out. “Don’t let him out until I say so.”
“Yes, darling,” Jennifer slowly walked over to the bed and looked at Russell who was doing his best to not show any pain in his face. “I don’t get it. The Lynn family can provide the best treatment for your mother. They can pave a much brighter future for you than Natasha’s family ever can. Just think about it.” She spat the apple seeds on his bed. “You wouldn’t need to experience this humiliation if you marry such a big family.” She then took his mobile, laptop, and all the electronic devices before locking the door from outside.
After she left, Russell hissed and cringed in pain. He pressed his shoulders and shins, where his dad had targeted the most.
Thinking how Natasha had rejected his proposal, he felt even more miserable. Even his own family wasn’t supporting his decisions. He fought back against his tears, but they won against him this time.
After crying and crying, he ran out of tears, but his heart was aching a lot more than before. He got up from the bed and went to the bathroom, grabbed a small bottle from the shelf and returned to his bed. He opened the box and looked inside. There were more than thirty sleeping pills.
If he were to still refuse to marry Kyra, Arnold might just kill him. Why give that burden to Arnold or Jennifer, he thought.
He poured batches of sleeping pills into his mouth and drank alcohol to make the process smoother. They tasted like metal and didn’t make it any easier to swallow them. Nevertheless, in a couple of minutes, he emptied the whole box and tossed it away before downing the remaining alcohol in the bottle.
“I’m sorry, Kyra. I’m sure you’ll find someone better than me.
“I’m sorry, my fans. I won’t be able to make new vlog videos for you all.”
Tears melted in his eyes like never before.
“I’m sorry, Mom. This is the end of the road for your son.”
Kyra came home to her estate. Her father, a tall and bulky man with a perfect mustache, was waiting for her while acting like he was watching television.Kyra ignored him and headed straight to her room.“Didn’t I tell you to not go outside until you get married?” Liam spoke just loud enough so her daughter could hear him.Kyra stopped and turned around and looked at her father who had eight platinum rings decorating his fingers, three thin platinum chains in his neck. He also had a couple of golden teeth fixed in his mouth. He would definitely pass for a gangster that could easily scare adults with his mere gaze.“Where did you go?” Liam patiently asked.“To… my fiance’s house,” Kyra responded, with her head slightly lowered.“The dead one, or the living one?” Liam’s voice grew a little harder.“I wanted to know if he wanted to marry me or not,” Kyra hesitantly stated. “As I suspected, he didn’t know I was pregnant.”Liam’s expression didn’t change. He slowly stood up and picked the
Four days later. The Bennett family members were having a wonderful breakfast. Arnold, Jennifer, and their kids, James and Viola, were all in a good mood. James was 19, and Viola was 20. James got his mother’s features, and his face was more oval compared to Viola who got her dad’s features. She had a sharp physique compared to him.Russell came walking down the stairs slowly and occupied his seat. Russell’s biological mother was a foreigner, so he had a different skin complexion and facial structure compared to his step-siblings.Russell didn't greet anyone, and he looked dull.“Brother Russell? Why are you acting a bit strangely since yesterday?” Violo asked, looking a little worried. “Did you hurt your foot or something? Is everything alright?”Russell didn’t say anything.“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Viola pressed him for an answer.James nudged his sister and whispered, “Maybe he’s got a rash or something. Women aren’t the only ones who get moody every once in a while or fee
Tears streamed down his cheek nonstop as Russell stared down from the clifftop. However, because he was hypnotized, his expression was flat. Nevertheless, his heart was heavy. He jumped without even closing his eyes.A fall from that height would result in a quick death for sure. However, Russell felt someone grabbing his shirt and pulling him back just in time. It was a vicious pull where he got tossed onto the ground.“Whoa, dude, you couldn’t find a better time to commit suicide than when I’m going out to make pizza delivery?” a guy removed his bike helmet and kept looking at Russell’s face to better assess his state of mind. He snapped his fingers right before Russell’s face, and Russell was snapped out of the spell he was put in.Russell, for a second, found himself staring at this man. He was so good-looking even though he wasn’t tall like Russell. He had one of those ethereal faces you wouldn’t mind looking at for hours. “W-Who are you?” he looked around, wondering where he was
Russell’s house was on the northern side of the city, where his father and everyone else from the family except Elora lived.Elora was living in a small farm house bought on the southern side of the city. This was done so she would be staying as far away from the main house as possible. Russell didn’t like that. However, he could understand why his father had to do it. Elora was no longer Arnold’s wife. There was no need for him to take care of her, but for her sake and for Russell’s sake, he was taking care of her medical bills and other expenses. Then again, if Elora had filed for alimony, she would have made Arnold’s life difficult. Now, Arnold had spent only 10,000 dollars on the farm house in the past, and it was still his house. Its price kept increasing with every year. Today, it would sell for more than 70,000 dollars, so Arnold didn’t really lose anything, and he was also getting his mother treated by a friend, so the expenses were kept to minimum.Russell’s mother was suffer
An Alfa Romeo SUV stopped in front of a premium Myers clothing store. Two young women got out of the car, all wearing fashionable clothing and with thick makeup on their faces and more.“You want to buy your wedding dress here?” Natasha’s elder sister, Skarlette, frowned straight away. “It’s too much for us. A single dress here might cost more than the wedding itself.”Natasha, however, waved her father’s credit card and laughed.“You’ve gotta be kidding me.” “It’s going to be fine,” Natasha assured. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I want everything to be posh and perfect.”“But you don’t want to look too rich because Denver might think you’re trying to compete with him,” Skarlette suggested. “You don’t want to make your man think that.” Her sister hadn’t even introduced him to her yet, so she had little to no idea about him other than knowing how he looked and a few other things her sister had shared with her. Denver was also Natasha’s schoolmate, and his family grew to b
A shop assistant came over to Natasha and Skarlette and helped them choose the dresses. No matter which dress they saw, they were all priced over 500,000 dollars, and Skarlette kept using one word: No. After receiving ten nos on a trot, the shop assistant took them to a different section where the prices were more affordable, ranging between 100 to 300 thousand dollars. Skarlette could finally smile and say yes to whatever the shop assistant tried to show to her sister. After a long forty minutes of trying many dresses, Natasha finally chose a jasmine-patterned wedding dress with a hooded see-through cape. “Oh my, Nattie!” Skarlette covered her mouth in joy and astonishment. “You look like a royal princess in this.” She quickly checked the price. “It’s 325K, but it’s worth it. I can’t believe I’m saying this.” “I’m happy that you liked it. Do you think Russell, I mean, Denver, will like it as well?” “If he doesn’t, there must be something wrong with his eyes!” “Haha,” Natasha lau
A minute ago.Russell was inside the changing room, staring at the price tag more than the pastel pink suit itself. “2.7 million dollars for a wedding suit…”Just what was in this suit that made it so pricey? No matter how much he worked his head over it, he couldn’t understand. He and his family could live happily ever after with this much money, after all. While he was buttoning up, he heard a voice talking with Kyra. It felt somewhat familiar, but he didn’t recognize it. That voice belonged to Skarlette. “Maybe she met with some old friend?” he thought.Russell looked at himself in the mirror. Though the suit made him look good, there wasn’t much glow in his eyes. He pressed his hand against his face in the mirror. “She rejected my face. She rejected my love. She rejected my honesty. She rejected my lifestyle. With one swing of her hand, she rejected my everything… and I thought she was my everything.”He remembered the moment when he had met her at the children’s amusement park, w
Natasha snorted and gave her credit card. The cashier swiped the card in the machine, but the swipe got declined. The cashier swiped again. The same thing happened. He looked at the sisters once, and Skarlette told him to do it again. The cashier tried again, and it didn’t work.“I’m sorry, the transaction has been declined. There must be an issue with the card.”“That’s impossible,” Natasha raised her voice. “Check again.”He checked again, but the same thing happened. He gave them the card but not the items. “Can you please move aside?”Skarlette was shell-shocked, whereas Natasha quivered with mortification and could not lift her head to look in Russell’s direction.Being told to move aside by a mere cashier… was there anything more humiliating?Seeing their pale expressions, Russell whispered to Kyra, “Can you pay for them?”Kyra didn’t expect that, so she couldn’t hide the look of surprise. “I can, but…” she answered in a low voice, “it might be taken in the wrong way.”“Skarlett
