As they reentered headquarters, neither one of them said a word, and they carefully maintained a safe distance between them, but they couldn’t stop smiling either. Once inside, they headed straight for the sleeping quarters. As soon as the door closed behind them, they immediately embraced again as if it had been far too long since they had had physical contact. Their lips were so passionately locked onto each other’s that they stumbled as they moved through the room. “Get back to the armory. Grab what you can. It’s time to suit up,” ordered Dutch. “Wilson, get your sword. Everyone move now!”Wilson took off toward the maximum security weapons room; the rest moved toward the armory. As they reached the armory, Kora was starting to panic. Flashbacks from the fieldtrip were overwhelming her.“I can’t do this,” she said as she stumbled against the wall and slid down onto the floor, clutching her knees to her chest.“Kora, we don’t have a choice,” Kyle said as he crouched down next to her. “We’ve been trained. The wolf tore through the cubicles as it moved toward Kyle with astonishing speed. Kyle realized too late he had moved too far forward and the wolf would be cutting off his exit from behind. He turned toward the cat, which was coming at him from the other angle, but he was trapped—there was nowhere to go.Wilson signaled Kristen to open fire. They stood up from behind the cubicle walls and began shooting at the wolf from both angles. The pain stopped the wolf in its tracks, and it fell to the floor. Kyle opened fire on the bobcat, but he kept missing as it was apparently much faster and more agile than the wolf. The bobcat swiped its claws at Kyle, but he dodged the blows by leaping into one of the nearby offices. Kristen turned her attention toward the bobcat, firing wildly to deter it from entering the room with Kyle.Wilson moved in toward where the wolf had fallen. “How did it act on its own?” asked David from across the room.He and Dutch had been standing at the doorway without any of them realizing it.“I don’t know,” answered Wilson. “I was pinned and really wishing I could reach my sword, and all of a sudden, the sword sent a wave of electricity through me and into the wolf.”“That’s interesting that it’s connected to you even when you’re not wielding it,” said Dutch.“I would like to run some more tests on it if you don’t mind,” said David.“Sure,” agreed Wilson.David hesitated. “Not to rush you, but would right now be all right?”“Okay, let’s do it. Wilson pulled Kora in close to him and ran his fingers down the back of her hair, gently massaging her head and neck.“It sucks we had such a bad ending to such a wonderful day,” he said.“The day isn’t over yet,” she reminded him.He looked into her eyes, leaned in, and kissed her. All around them, encircling them in a protective dome, was a wall of electricity. It arced out in waves from the sword on Wilson’s back, pulsing brightly every time one of the bats hit it. The creatures could not penetrate the dome. Each one that tried was repelled violently by a bolt of electricity and thrown to the ground. The fried, smoking bodies were piling up all around outside. Eventually, the crashes slowed and then ceased altogether as the remaining bats learned of the danger of the dome. Still shrieking furiously, they circled around overhead, forming a tornado-like funnel with Wilson and Kora in the center.Kora stared at Wilson in bewilderment. She looked scared, and he couldn’t blame her. He was fairly certain he could maintain the force field as they moved, but it was still a risk.Without warning, the bats started dropping out of the air, dead.
