Chapter 58

She tried again, this time focusing on the objective. A burst of icy wind shot out of the sword. It created some icicles at the edge of the platform but nothing near what she needed. She practiced for a bit while Wilson tried to regain his strength. She was getting better and better at it until she finally created a thin layer of ice all the way to the beach. It only lasted a few seconds, but seeing this gave her a boost of confidence. She kept practicing, and it wasn’t long before she was able to create one thick enough for them to cross.

She smiled and turned to Wilson.

“You ready?”

“As ready as I’m going to be, but I’ll need your help,” he said.

She helped him to his feet. He was still so weak that she needed to support most of his weight. They began walking out onto the ice. It was much more difficult to keep from slipping with Wilson leaning on her. When they were about a third of the way across, they started to hear the cracking sound.
