I wave him off. “I’ll be fine. However, I’d keep an eye on your heir. If he went after Morgain, who we thought was the heir, he’ll go after Silas next.”Alier shakes his head. “For his safety, no one outside of his mothers, siblings, and I, knew he existed.”“I knew he existed.” I say. “Well, his name anyway.”“But not what he looked like.” Alier counters.“Please verify that no one knows him.” I say. “What do people know him as?”“A member of the royal guard.” Alier says. “He’s Leo’s subordinate, which is why he’s with Leo most of the time.”“Then I’ll keep that pretense.” I ignore the boys eyes as I turn fully to face Alier. “Since I’m unclear the direction these attacks will go now, I’ll need to resume my investigation again. It’s best I leave tonight to get a jump start on this.”Alier’s face goes straight to amused. “And miss the ball?”“A sacrifice I must make,” I say quickly, getting ready to take my leave.“Nope,” Alier says, taking my hand. “Ileen would be devastated if you l
“Isaac ,” She warns. “Humor me.” I groan while she adds on, “And don’t even think about going back into that water.” She quickly leaves the room after giving me a piercing stare. Silas is wearing a red robe, looking more uncomfortable than I am annoyed. He rubs the back of his head. “So…why isn’t Wilson going for my head this time?”“You were with Leo.” I explain, touching my slimy tail, watching it shrink. It takes longer than my arms, since my legs have grown and molded together. It’s a reaction that happens when I go into the water. Air destroys my webbing and scales, while water makes it expand.“What is it with you two?” He asks, coming to sit next to me.“Well, one, he slept with my sister while we were dating. And two, he told my parents that I was enrolling with the Guardian Committee full time.” I flip my wet hair, a little annoyed it’s only halfway dry. When you’re part fish, everything dries fast.“Why is being with the Guardian’s a bad thing?” Silas asks, looking intrigued
I tense, hoping I can finally get my answers on who he is; but force myself to appear relaxed. “Do you know what he looked like? Where he went?”She shakes her head, putting her hand on her forehead; hidden under a partial sun mask. “Oddly enough, I don’t know. I can only recall his name. It’s not common these days so it stuck in my mind.”More amnesia? “Are you sure? Do you know if he had a scar?”“Who dear?” She asks, her posture changing, appearing more as if she’s gossiping at a party instead of discussing her son’s potential murderer.“Mike ,” I say, shooting Alier a concerned look. She waves me off. “I’ve never heard that name before. Alier, where is Morgain? You promised you had news.” She pushes me out of the way, stepping closer to Alier. “Where is my son Morgain?”“Miyla, Morgain passed away.” Alier says, surprise evident in his voice.“What?” She yells, drawing attention as she starts hysterically sobbing.“Mi…” Ileen says, looking at me, unsure what to do.When more eyes a
He pours the red liquor into a thin glass. I take the flute glass as I lean in, kissing him on the cheek. “I’ll be back.” I promise him in a low, seductive voice. If they want to throw me into a room filled with horny men, then I can play this game. I’m nowhere near the only female here, but I plan to make it feel as if they wish I wasn’t even allowed in this room. The second I turn around, I see Alier and Ileen walking down the stairs, with a limping Leo and concerned looking Silas. Maybe I stomped on Leo’s foot one too many times. Nah. Alier locks eyes with mine, stopping in the middle of the stairs. He clears his throat, eye contact never breaking. The glare I’m giving him could be lethal.Alier claps his hands. “Welcome my friends, to the Solstice Masquerade Ball. It warms my heart to see so many of you that I know, and love, gathered into one room. I would also like to announce with great sadness that Prince Morgain will be unable to attend tonight. He is engaged in some other co
I give a genuine laugh, causing him to smile. “I feel the exact same way. I’d rather spend my days doing what I love, then screwing around with someone.”He grins. “In that case, do you mind if I take pleasure in your company tonight? To spare me from them,” He asks, nodding his head towards the pack of girls that haven’t even moved.“Be my guest. It’ll shield me as well.” I say as I take a sip of my drink. It’s strong and tastes of strawberries. It’s surprisingly delightful, and a little stale. I hadn’t taken a sip of it all night.“So you’re part of the Guardian Committee?” Greifi asks, trying to stir conversation.“Do you really want to start off with that question?” I ask, making him grimace.“Yeah, that was lame.” He chuckles, rubbing the back of his head.“How about we talk about you? What do you do Greifi? Where are you from?”“Lusole actually. I work on the border patrol of the Sunmoon pack. I’m their Gamma.”Sunmoon? Well they do have a lot of packs in that territory. “Nice.”
He shakes his head. “My servants will bleed themselves for me, whenever I have need of their services. However, they’re weak, which is why you see me losing control of my shift earlier than I anticipated.”“Then why kill them?” I demand.“Because I can then store their power and use it whenever I have need of it.”“That’s insane and impossible.”“Not when you know the correct spells.” He smirks. “Would you like me to show you? You should faint here in a moment. It’s astonishing you haven’t yet. Usually those I bite are down before I remove my teeth.”“Then lets see if I can kill you before that happems,” I say, realizing my words just slightly slurred. Well crap.“Isaac ,” I hear someone that sounds an awful lot like Silas yell.“Isaac !” I hear Alier yell. “Guards!”“Until the next bite,” Mike says, starting his run.“Go after him!” I yell, swaying just a little.Alier reaches me, and I just realized Sarian is with him as well. “What happened?” he demands as I put pressure on my sti
“We don’t know that for sure,” Silas responds in a hard tone. “Alier said Isaac said Mike was able to use a shapeshifter’s ability by drinking its blood. Do you think he used it again and tried to go after her in the infirmary?”“How can he even do that?” Leo demands. “I know you can’t do that, and I don’t think your old man can or you.”“I don’t know.” Silas yells, where I then hear a sudden crack.“Careful. This is balham country. You’ll be dead before you see them, so do not offend them. I’m not surprised that Isaac chose to surface in Aqina. The balham are especially protective of her.”“What if we track Wilson then?”Leo snorts. “Good luck with that. Balhams have scent pockets in their feet that cover their smell to others, but other balhams can pick up on it.”He groans. “Where would she have gone?”“How should I know?”“You dated her!” Silas snaps.“Yeah, and look how well our breakup is going.” Leo barks back.“To be fair, you kind of deserve it. Why did you want to break u
First stop, I go to the section containing spells. I find nothing regarding amnesia. Okay, let’s look at venom. My fingers scan the section, looking for books regarding poison, venom, potions. Anything. None of them contain what I’m looking for. My next stop is in regard to ferals. I want to find if ferals can truly talk, or if Morgain wasn’t fully turned. One passage catches my eye: “Ferals are creatures that are cursed for forsaking the Gods and Goddesses. They are a cross of vampire and demon, designed to kill and feed on humanoid prey. It is believed that the original feral was a vampire, who performed spells to make it stronger, in order to kill the Vampiric Goddess’s daughter. The spells backfired and created a creature so gruesome, that all feared it. When the Goddess learned of this, she put a curse on the creature. To always be feared and crave nothing but blood and death. “Contact with a feral’s venom is a painful death. Once in contact with the victim’s blood stream, their
