03. Secret Identity

"What are you saying, huh? How could you not tell me first before making a decision?" Lady Vesper scolded Yris, but her stern gaze was directed at Edward.

Lady Vesper knew that if there was trouble, it started with her granddaughter, Yris, but the one being scolded and disliked was Edward.

Edward felt a deep irony in his heart and a hint of anger, but unfortunately, he didn't want to show his true emotions. He was too exhausted. And for these past five years, he had always given in, but what did he get? Only insults and condescension from all of them.

Despite his emotions, when Yris looked his way, Edward could only quietly sigh. She was the woman he loved wholeheartedly, the one who brought color to his bleak life five years ago.

"Grandmother, this is my fault. I couldn't make Yris happy in our marriage, so I agreed to her desire for a divorce."

Lady Vesper angrily slammed the table, her face turning red, and her breath slightly quickened. Bryan, sitting next to her, immediately stood up to calm her.

Handing her a glass of water, Bryan said, "Grandmother, don't be too angry. Drink first and calm your emotions."

Lady Vesper took a deep breath, accepted the glass of water from Bryan, and composed herself again.

Seeing that, Bryan seized the opportunity to speak. "Something as important as this happened, why didn't you discuss it with grandmother first? After all, she is the head of the Vesper family."

Upon hearing that, Yris hastily replied, "Oh, I thought Edward had already talked to grandmother. If I knew he didn't do that, I wouldn't have surprised grandmother with this issue."

Even though everyone knew Yris was just trying to shift all the blame onto Edward, no one defended him at all. They silently agreed it was Edward's fault and didn't bother with it.

Edward also remained silent, not defending himself as usual. He was truly easily cornered.

"Even if he spoke to me, you still should have talked to grandmother first before bringing it up," Bryan added. It was his time to assert himself.

Lady Vesper silently agreed. As the head of the family, she needed to know everything first, especially regarding something as important as this. Glancing at Edward, who lowered his head, Lady Vesper asked, "So, do you agree with Yris's decision?"

Not answering immediately, Edward slowly raised his face and showed a very thin polite smile, hiding his regret. "Yes, as long as she's happy."

There was a long sigh in the room as Lady Vesper turned to Yris again, seriously asking, “Are you serious? What is your reason for doing this?”

“Grandmother, Charles and I love each other. We feel compatible, so we decided to get married.” Yris gazed at Charles, took the man’s hand, and brought him closer to Lady Vesper.

Yris continued, “My marriage to Edward was based on my grandfather’s wishes, and it was enough for me to endure a boring marriage for 5 years. Now I’ve found my true love, so I want to end it all and start a new life.”

Yris looked at Lady Vesper with pleading eyes. She spoke again, trying to persuade, “Grandmother, I beg you, let me pursue my happiness now.”

Feeling it might not work, Yris turned to her parents and younger brother. She signaled them to help her speak to Lady Vesper.

Monica understood the signal and immediately spoke on behalf of her daughter. “Ma’am, actually, this is not a bad idea. Besides, Yris’s lover is from the Shirk family, which has better qualifications than... Edward.”

“Yes, ma’am. The Shirk family is the wealthiest in this town and surely can provide benefits to the Vesper family. Moreover, Edward doesn’t mind.” This time, Yris’s father, Kris, spoke and persuaded Lady Vesper.

No one spoke from the other families. Even if Yris and Edward divorced, it seemed neither advantageous nor detrimental to them.

“This is not an easy decision, Grandmother, after all, Edward still holds a position in the company.” Bryan added, showing a hint of concern on his face. In reality, he was signaling Lady Vesper.

Lady Vesper fell silent for a long time, her mind filled with other thoughts. However, thinking that Edward had nothing outside his position in the Vesper family company, she felt a bit relieved. Even if Yris and Edward divorced, Edward had nothing beyond that. Lady Vesper considered employing Edward until someone in her family showed the capability to lead the company.

“Grandmother, I plead with you, let me live happily now,” Yris pleaded again with a soft tone, holding Lady Vesper’s hand. She looked pitiful.

So, after some moments of contemplation, Lady Vesper made a decision. “Alright.”

It was agreed upon so easily.

Edward knew this would happen, but foolishly, he still held a glimmer of hope that Lady Vesper would reject Yris's request. Leaning back in his chair, he said nothing, the smile on his lips disappearing. The aura he emitted was slightly unfriendly, but only a few truly paid attention to it.

Dinner continued with a variety of emotions from those present, but they quickly recovered the atmosphere. Murmured conversations and laughter filled the air. Many, especially Yris's parents, praised Charles and happily asked him many questions.

Their attitude was clearly different from when facing Edward.

The dinner ended, and without saying a word, Edward left. However, no one paid any attention to him at all. Edward was accustomed to it.

He got into his car and drove away from the Vesper family residence, aimlessly wandering the streets.

Even the brightly shining moon couldn't mend his shattered feelings. He had truly lost hope of winning Yris's heart.

Midway through the journey, his phone rang. It was a call from his younger brother, Edmund.

Edward parked the car on the side of the road, permissible for parking, and answered the call.

"Brother!" Edmund's loud voice came immediately after the call connected.

Edward only grunted a "hm?" in response.

There was a sigh from Edmund before he asked, "Where are you now?"

"On the road, what's up?" Edward stared out of the window with a vacant expression.

"Oh, I heard from Adam that she divorced you and brought her lover to the dinner event."

"Yeah, so?" Edward's tone was still very flat, but Edmund knew his mood was really bad.

So, Edmund sighed again and said persuasively, "Come back here and take care of your own business. It's been five years for you to endure that woman and her family. Don't be foolish again!"
