04. Making Decisions

The next morning, Edward headed to the company. Unlike usual, many Vesper family members were earnestly working this morning, evident from their cars parked in the garage. Edward, a bit puzzled, observed the scene, as if a big question mark hovered over his head.

Glancing at Jennifer, who had just arrived to welcome him, he asked, "What time is it?"

Jennifer checked her boss's wristwatch before looking at her own and politely replied, "7:50 AM. Ten minutes past an hour before the workday starts."

Edward nodded, dismissing the oddity. As he was about to leave, a boldly driven limited edition car parked not far from him. It belonged to Charlie, Lady Vesper's second grandson. Edward, not wanting to offend, waited for the owner to emerge.

Sure enough, Charlie and his younger sibling came out simultaneously. They glanced at Edward with undisguised disdain, a stark change from the dinner incident the night before.

Ignoring their disdainful looks, Edward smiled politely and greeted, "Second cousin, sixth cousin."

"Oh, you just arrived too," Charlie walked closer, not out of desire but because Edward was in the way to the elevator.

"This is my usual arrival time," Edward responded. They entered the elevator.

Inside, Charlie deliberately said to Edward, "I know you might be saddened by the divorce with Yris, but you've been with the Vesper family company for the last 4 years, reaching your current position. It shouldn't be hard for you to find a job elsewhere."

Edward didn't answer, only offering his characteristic thin smile.

Edward's patience was something despised by Charlie and almost everyone in the Vesper family. Since the beginning of Edward and Yris's marriage, his calm and intelligent demeanor had been praised by Gentleman Vesper, even serving as a benchmark for his own grandchildren.

Now that Gentleman Vesper was no more, and Yris sought a divorce, there was no reason for Charlie and his cousins to feel insecure. With Edward sidelined, the competition for the highest position in the company also diminished.

For Lady Vesper's character, she would not let someone outside her family control the company.

Thinking about this, Charlie showed a sarcastic smile to Edward for the first time.

However, on the other hand, his younger brother, Reed, uttered something unpleasant to hear, "Brother, you forget that big companies now require at least a college degree for a decent position. Another way is to have a good family background."

"Ah, I almost forgot!" Charlie stared at Edward again. "No worries, you can be an ordinary employee for now, or a division manager in a small company."

Edward's smile stiffened, his gaze appearing somewhat cold. Then he responded with an unchanged tone, "First cousin doesn't need to worry about me."

"Oh, that's good." Charlie no longer wore a smiling face.

The elevator stopped, and its doors opened. Charlie and Reed didn't wait for Edward to exit first, they walked ahead, ignoring Edward as if they weren't the ones speaking in the elevator earlier.

Jennifer glanced at Edward's unchanging expression and sighed deeply about her boss's patience.

Edward entered his office and discussed today's schedule with Jennifer. When the workday started, his secretary brought documents that needed review and signature. Edward focused his mind on the tasks at hand, but his thoughts occasionally drifted back to what happened that night, as well as the conversation with his brother.

He sighed heavily, gazing at the bright sky outside. The door to his office opened without a knock, he thought it was Jennifer, but the voice of the woman he missed echoed in the room, bringing Edward back to reality.

"I've come to ask for your signature on the divorce papers so that our divorce can be processed soon."

Yris sat on the sofa with her usual confident demeanor, placing the divorce papers on the table.

Edward scrutinized the woman carefully, as if engraving her features in his memory. The Yris in front of him now was different from the young, pure, and kind Yris of five years ago. Not only had her appearance matured, and her attitude become more direct, but it was also in the way her eyes looked at him. Edward could sense a kind of hatred and rejection in Yris's eyes.

Sitting on the sofa across from Yris, Edward picked up the divorce papers from the table and read them word by word.

"Don't worry, Grandma will give you a good position in the company after we divorce. So, you don't need to bother looking for another job," explained Yris. "Oh, you'll also get ownership of the apartment you're currently living in."

Without responding, Edward placed the divorce papers back on the table. Calmly, he said, "I don't want anything after the divorce. It's better if you change it before handing it to me again."

Yris stared at Edward with various complex emotions. This man, always polite and patient, had been her legal husband for the past 5 years, but she had never felt that they were emotionally husband and wife. As a love pursuer, Yris couldn't endure and desperately wanted a divorce.

Not to mention, Edward had qualities inferior to her prospective husband.

"I'll change it and send it back as soon as possible," replied Yris as she stood up from her seat.

Before leaving, Yris heard Edward ask, "Have you seriously thought about it? Won't you regret it?"

Yris didn't understand the meaning behind Edward's question, she nodded seriously. "I'm very serious. So, you don't need to have any other thoughts about me. We didn't start this relationship from the beginning, so there shouldn't be any regrets."

After saying that, Yris left without looking back. It was only now that Edward realized he always saw Yris's back, but she never turned around to look at him.

Edward pondered for a moment before calling Jennifer.

"Boss, the meeting..." Jennifer's words caught in her throat as she saw Edward with a sad expression. She thought she would never see her boss appear weak, even when facing accusations and insults from his wife's relatives, he usually just smiled patiently and hid all his emotions.

Without hiding anything, Edward said to Jennifer, "Draft my resignation letter."

Jennifer was slightly surprised. "B-boss, are you serious? Your marriage might still be salvageable."

Hearing that, Edward chuckled. "I don't want to force it. Go and draft the resignation letter for me."

Jennifer could sense Edward's somber emotions, so she didn't bring up the matter again. She quietly left and complied with Edward's request. Then she took out her phone to send a message to someone.

[Boss resigning, should I follow him or stay at the Vesper family company as a spy?]
