Lucas's pov
I scoffed underneath my breath at Lady Wright's charge. Why are they making a big deal out of it anyway, if they need a slave they should hire one!
“I had to see someone. I informed Ava before leaving. And I apologize for leaving the way I did.’’ My voice came out unusually hard, I was doing a lot trying to contain their ruckus.
‘‘Who was it?’’ Lady Wright demanded.
“Who cares about who he went to meet? I don't think there's any justification for what he did.’’ Daisy argued, and I found myself nodding.
Lady Wright released a scoff, turning to Daisy.
“You won't believe this! The day at the hospital, wasn't that yesterday?’’ She asked no one in particular, but Natasha was fast to confirm it.
Lady Wright continued. “I was just in a chat with Mr Sikes about an hour ago, and guess what happened?’’
Things were getting complicated at this point. The three women looked utterly puzzled, trying to get Lady Wright's point.
Lady Wright searched through her phone, and it dawned on me that it was about the transfer. She definitely suspected that I knew something about it.
“Take a look at this.’’ Lady Wright displayed her screen for each woman to see.
‘‘What?” Natasha drawled.
“How's that even possible?’’ Daisy added. She didn't seem moved by it unlike Natasha who's shock is written all over her pale face.
Mrs Royce shot a suspicious look at me, squinting her eyes as if to get the answer to the mystery from my eyes.
‘‘What's the source?’’ She asked Lady Wright.
“It says B.D Julian Reid. I don't know who the fuck that is, but I know this criminal here has something to do with it.’’ Lady Wright shot, returning all attention to me with her accusing finger.
Meanwhile, a wave of relief washed through me to realize that the name of the source was nothing related to the company's name, or at least they wouldn't imagine that it's what the B.D stands for. Only I understood. My father was sensible enough not to carelessly use the name of the company and used his name instead.
“And what do you have to say about this, Lucas?” Daisy asked squarely. She couldn't believe in this world that I'd have such an amount of money under my possession, she didn't seem too moved like the others.
‘‘I–uh, I don't know what she's talking about.’’ I answered.
“Of course you do, you bloody traitor. I remember how you were firm back at the hospital, insisting that you'll pay the loan sharks yourself. Where were you expecting to get the money back there?’’ Lady Wright fired.
It dawned on me that I was squared. I had gotten too upset by their insults and declared to make the payments myself without caring about what they'll think. And three out of the four women in front of me right now we're solid witnesses.
“Yes, I remember that.’’ Natasha was quick, snapping her fingers as if it retrieved the memories.
‘‘Really?’’ Now Daisy was amused, she faced me with her face burning red. “Tell us now, if you don't then I'll be forced to involve the police.’’ She threatened.
“Yes exactly! That's just what I'm hoping to do.’’ Lady Wright took it upon herself, and within seconds she was on her phone already.
“No, Amber, not just yet.’’ Mrs Royce held back Lady Wright's arm.
“And why not? Obviously, he's not ready speak.’’ Lady Wright snapped.
‘‘Speak up Lucas, will you? Or you want to get the police involved?’’ Mrs Royce yelled at me.
At this point I was beyond confused and lost on what to say. I didn't plan for this, I even forgot about the transfer after getting to the hospital.
“I don't even want to hear what he has to say, he's a liar and a criminal. The police will do a better job at pressing the truth out of him.’’ Daisy scoffed and Natasha nodded in agreement, urging Lady Wright to go on.
“Alright fine, I'll tell you.!’’ I called out immediately, clearing my throat as they all stared at me.
“Its–its a lottery win.’’ I blurted out, praying fervently in my heart that they'd fall for it.
‘‘What lottery?’’ Lady Wright further demanded, she seemed really suspicious of me and I couldn't help but wonder why.
“I played the lottery game sometime ago and my luck turned in. It was the money I planned on using to pay Barnabas, the loan shark.’’ I explained.
“Was it the same lottery win you used in transferring your mother to that hospital for her surgery?’’ Lady Wright persisted.
It dawned on me immediately that a lottery win might not be the best suitable excuse. The hospital was a reputable one, one of the biggest in the city. I'm pretty sure the fees for my mother's surgery must have been twice the fees of the previous hospital. Lady Wright knew this, her suspicions about me must have fueled from the very moment she stepped into the hospital.
“Oh, that…’’
“Whoa! How come I didn't think about that?’’ Natasha’s eyes widened in realization.
‘‘What is it?’’ Daisy asked immediately, alarmed by the sudden tension in the air as realizations blossomed.
“How much was it?’’ Lady Wright threw at me, interrupting the ladies.
“Huh?’’ I mouthed. It's at this moment I realized how much of a mathematician I am. My brain ran multiple calculations at once.
“How much was the lottery money?’’ She yelled.
‘‘It was… quite a lot. About ten million dollars.’’ I quickly added.
Scoffs followed from Daisy and Natasha. Disbelieving scoffs at that.
“Do lotteries still pay such an amount these days?” Lady Wright asked rhetorically, she's hell bent on not believing me.
“I didn't see the need to tell anyone about it because I also wasn't sure I would really get the money. I had it in mind when I came to lend some money from you, I planned to repay you once I got the money.’’ I established my lies, leaving the women to wallow in their realizations.
“He's one lucky piece of shit, isn't he?’’ Natasha stated.
“Natasha!’’ Mrs Royce cautioned, and she let out a scoff.
“So what? That was what prompted your despicable attitude towards Honorable Sikes last night? Just ten million dollars and you thought you could now behave the way you want?’’ Lady Wright came at me once again.
“I'll apologize to him once again if need be it, I don't mind getting him his favorite wine as well.’’ I proposed, a knowing smirk tugging at my lips.
Witnessing what his face will look like when he gets the dismissal letter tomorrow wouldn't be so bad.
Lucas's pov‘‘Ding!’’ The oven chimed into the silence, startling me shortly as I rushed to turn it off. I brought out the steaming hot strawberry cake and left it in a tray to cool up.“Lucas!!’’ It finally came, Lady Wright's yell that I'd been expecting. I stepped out to catch her gaze from the dining area where they were all seated, awaiting desserts. From Lady Wright, my mother-in-law, to Ava, my wife and the only reason I'm in the Wright mansion, on to Daisy, their daughter-in-law whose father owned a famous corporation. She lived here with her husband, Romeo who runs the family business. And lastly is Ava's cousin, Natasha. ‘‘How much longer will desserts take, isn't there a single thing you can do right?’’ Lady Wright spiked.‘‘I'm sorry, I'll serve it now.’’“Please tell me you'll wash those filthy hands before touching anything,” Daisy called out, referring to the cleaning towel in my hands. ‘‘Oh c'mon, he should know better than that.’’ Natasha scoffed. “You can't be s

I was going to dump her outside if you didn't show up soon.’’ He conceded in a mean voice. “Wh..what's going on?’’ My voice trembled. ‘‘Isn't it obvious?’’ He sneered. “We can't accommodate your mother anymore, take her away, elsewhere. It's none of my business.’’ He stormed out of the room, leaving me shaken. The nurses watched me with disdain, but I ignored them and rushed to my mother's bedside. Her weary eyes brimmed with tears, she could barely manage a gesture. “Mom, are you okay?’’ I fought hard to hold back my tears, my heart tearing apart. “You can just take me home.’’ She whispered weakly, but that was impossible. She's totally incompetent and needs hospitalization. ‘‘Don't worry, I'll fix it,’’ I reassured her. “Sir, please take h

He gently extracted files from the case, and crisp bundles of dollar notes revealed beneath, widening my gaze further as shock coursed through my veins. Caleb closed the briefcase sharply, scanning the surroundings briefly before facing me. “These are the main documents to be signed, but you still need to sign that one to affirm your identity.’’ He nodded his chin towards the first file in front of me.I swallowed hard as I signed, my throat constricting as sweat drenched my shirt. The air suddenly became too hot as Caleb explained the various purposes of each document while I signed. I summoned the courage to meet her gaze. “I asked him to come for it tomorrow.” A menacing smirk crawled onto her lips. ‘‘Where did you plan on getting it, my purse?’’ Gasps erupted from the surrounding crowd at her outburst, some had even begun capturing the scene on their phones. “I don't think I've ever stolen from you.’’ I replied firmly. I wondered what time the party was scheduled to commence for this number of people to have arrived. I proceeded into the house, and I appreciated the loneliness that embraced me. Pride sat on my shoulders like brazen armor as I read through the rest of the names. “I'll keep this,’’ I said. “Yes, you should!
