Mirato was serious as she suddenly leaped towards me at a speed I couldn't react to. Before I realized she had disappeared from where she previously was. Aratas had already grabbed her by the wrist and pushed her away from me.
Both of my hearts were beating extremely fast as I clutched my chest and realized blood was seeping out of the location where one of my hearts was.
Aratas snorted and pointed towards my wound, healing it instantly using his holy fire.
Aratas pinned Mirato to the wall as he glared at her and said:
"You think that keeping up our noses and not nurturing our own set of cannibals would give us an advantage during this bloody war?!"
He gave her a tight slap on the face, making her red eyes start trembling even more as crystal clear tears started to drop from her eyes down to her cheeks, wetting her face and clothes as they continued to slide down.
Mirato knew there was nothing she could do against Aratas. The Paladin was the peak physical and magical profession of the Church, and only the very talented and pious would be trained in the ways of the paladin.
Aratas only acted this way because he knew that if they wanted to keep their Church's existence, they would need to resort to drastic measures. It was just that Mirato couldn't accept such things due to her moral constraints.
I looked at the two arguing silently as I continued to clutch my chest, and I realized that Aratas must have recognized my cannibalistic features from the immediate moment he saw me, but he still recruited me as his squire because he had already been thinking about nurturing a cannibal for his Church.
I wasn't sure if I could be considered lucky or not.
After a little more time passed, Aratas let go of Mirtao before saying:
"You can let the Cardinal know about my decision. I'm sure he won't say anything about it."
Mirato glared at me and Aratas before nursing her wrists and leaving.
Aratas pointed at the runic stone before all of my information was deleted from it.
"Come with me."
Aratas opened a door that led towards a long corridor that stretched on for a while, going underground.
I followed him as we made our way down the corridor, Aratas then said:
"I'm sure that as a former commoner, you don't have any idea what I was talking about with Mirato, so I'm going to bring you up to speed."
He pointed toward different murals painted on the corridor as he explained:
"Our five Churches have been at war since time immemorial, I'm not sure why, as it's never mentioned in the ancient scriptures that I have read, but it looks like the generational hatred had always been given down from Cardinal to Cardinal, leading down to this everlasting war that only stops when we are invaded by foreign races."
Aratas sighed as he put a hand on one of the murals and continued:
"The talk about bringing cannibals into the fold of our war efforts had been put on the back burner for too much time, the other four churches had already shown signs of nurturing their squads of cannibals and it's time we took things seriously, I can see from the weak signs that you exude that you have only eaten one person, and I can guess that person was my previous foolish squire."
I couldn't help but nod. There was no reason to lie since everything had already been seen through.
Aratas nodded at me and then said:
"I'm not sure what made you eat him, but I guess it was just the primal instinct shouting from your body after you have been cornered and injured by him, this is how most cannibals are born on the battlefield as I had to fell some of my comrades that went down this path when I was younger."
"However, your reason doesn't matter now. I can see that you are a rather resolute person from the way you carry yourself, combined with the fact that you have live combat experience makes you the best prototype for our Church's cannibal squad!"
We finally reached the catacombs of the Church. The room we were in was dimly lit by torches that were hung on the walls, but when Aratas waved his hand, the torch's light increased in intensity, lighting the whole place up, leaving no darkness behind.
After the room lit up, I could now see that these catacombs were also prisons as multiple people could now be seen between the cold iron bars of enclosed space, keeping them jailed together along with having their arms and legs tied to the wall behind them with iron manacles.
The prisoners' eyes opened with anger and disgust as they saw Aratas and shouted:
"You damned pig, let us out this instant! You only got lucky when your Church caught us."
Aratas shook his head as he ignored their insults before saying:
"I guess you must know the reason why I brought you down here, right Minato?"
I looked at the prisoners, and I could sense that even though their strength was weakened by the prisons that kept them together, they were still way out of my league.
"Do you want me to eat them?"
Aratas shook his head as he said:
"Not them in particular, but you are right, they are one of the stronger prisoners we have here, and with your meager talent I'm not sure if you would be able to digest them with your current strength, there is also the fact that you don't have any battle style knowledge, so I'm not going to make you start with these martial masters, they might be weak on the surface, but they have quite a lot of knowledge on martial arts and weapon fighting.
From what I saw when I thought you the basis sword techniques of our Church, your brain is rather slow as well, so we need to expand its abilities through continuous devouring before you would be able to withstand and also get the memories of those here properly."
I couldn't help but feel that things were going a little bit too well for me as we went further into the prison of the Church to find the appropriate 'meals' for me.
Was there such a thing as a free lunch in this world? Surely not, which meant that I was going to pay dearly for the help that Aratas and the Church were giving me now...
But without the initial strength and with no talent to speak off, there was nothing else that I could do, so I had to gamble on their help.
The further we went into the prison, the weaker the pressure from the inmates was.Of course, they were all still stronger than me, but since they were chained and jailed, they couldn't unleash their whole aura.Aratas stopped in front of a particular jail before he knocked on the bars, making the person sitting in the darkness come up.He was an emaciated old man with a deep scar running over his nose and left eye. He had an aura around him that felt like he had seen quite some things in his life, and his eyes were empty of all emotions. It looked like he was on the verge of death, but his emaciated body was full of vitality, I could sense that through my newly stabilized power which I awakened from eating Aratas's previous squire. It wasn't anything special, it was just the start of reaching 'superhuman' strength, speed, and senses.Aratas looked at the old man before saying:"It's your time, Old man Skartion. You finally get to pay for your betrayal of the church with your life."S
After I regained my vision, I could see that we were standing in front of another jail.Inside it sat two middle-aged men with impressive physiques and scars running all over their faces, making them unrecognizable.Even though their physiques were impressive, it was obvious they were both starving and dehydrated from the color of their skin and the way their bones protruded from some places on their exposed skin.Aratas opened the jail bars and made both of them walk slowly forward as they glanced at each other before they tried to attack Aratas in a combination of moves, but Aratas easily grabbed both of their heads and smashed them together, but not strong enough to knock them out. They were disoriented, but after they quickly regained their wits, their eyes moved towards me, and then they decided to switch targets after they understood they weren't Aratas's match. My eyes narrowed as I saw a vision before I took a sidestep, unsheathed my sword, and decapitated one of the men in on
Aratas helped me up and said:"You have overexerted yourself after this stunt. It's better to get you someplace to rest before we continue."I followed Aratas out of the catacombs as we got back into the Church, then we exited and left towards the back of the Church, where multiple small houses sat there quietly, quite a lot of young men and women could be seen either praying, training with their swords, or meditating. They were all squires in training for the other paladins of the Church, who were now out on combat missions.Aratas waved his hand towards one of the male squires and said:"Make sure this young man gets an appropriate accommodation, he had been training very hard, and he needs a good rest."The young man nodded, but it was obvious from his gaze that he had ill will towards me.If I guess correctly, Mirato must have told them about my peculiarity, which in turn made them hostile towards me.Being a cannibal meant that I was going to be ostracized even though Aratas appr
I could feel my body restoring itself slowly as I sat down on the floor of the dilapidated house. It could heal faster than before, but I still vividly remembered when I had almost become mush, making me shudder for a few seconds as I understood the mortality of the human body. This wasn't something that could be avoided, but I knew that as I devoured more and more, my body should evolve accordingly, just like it made my teeth sharper and changed the color of my eyes and hair. The surroundings were eerily quiet as I was resting, the previous hustle and bustle from all of the training squire seemingly disappeared into the void as they were most likely avoiding me. Their fear was evident from their actions, they most likely thought that I was going to attack them. I sighed and shook my head, I felt deep inside that my body wasn't ready for any more devouring sessions, so I had to wait, even if I wanted to eat them, I couldn't, and I wasn't sure what type of reaction the Chuch would
A day and a good night's rest was almost enough for me to get back to full power, my regenerative capabilities had increased immensely after that near-death experience, and even though my body was unable to absorb all of the energy that I got from eating the last two people, I still improved in all areas.I clenched my fists as I got up from the floor of the broken house that I was in before I stretched my body and got out to be greeted by the first ray of sunlight that slowly came down from the morning sky.It was a beautiful sunrise that I didn't get to enjoy when I lived as a bandit. It was always killing pillaging, and doing things that made me uncomfortable until I became numb to them. Of course, now they brought a rush to me that I had no idea how to explain besides the fact that I most likely got addicted to doing those things.I sighed and shook my head as Shira slowly made her way toward my house. She still seemed a little bit unsure about me since she was walking very slowly
After one day of getting my body used to the forms of swordsmanship, I decided to go back to rest after I bid farewell to Shira for the day.My sleep was just like a baby's, soft and long until the rays of dawn hit me in the face and woke me up.But that wasn't the only thing that woke me up, I could hear some knocks at the door of the house, and when I got up and opened it, I saw Aratas's tall body waiting for me.He looked down at me and said:"You have to meet your new comrades on the battlefield. It has also been a few days since you rested. Do you feel like you can eat more?"I looked down at my stabilized hands and thought for a few seconds before nodding. I was looking forward to completing the set of basic swordsmanship. And to see my new comrades, which I will most likely have to make contingency plans against, just in case the hunger will betray them on the battlefield, and they would attack "allied" troops. We went back into the Church, then took the long corridor to the du
The two remaining teens were quite shaken. They weren't sure if they were going to follow Arata's words or not. The girl even took a step forward and asked meekly:"Do we truly have to eat them? Can't we give them a proper burial?"Aratas shook his head and then said:"They have failed, thus they cannot enjoy a proper burial. Maybe if they made some contributions to the Church, but they haven't done anything to deserve a proper burial. You two, eat them now!"Arata's eyes were serious as he unleashed a little of his aura to coerce them.I narrowed my eyes and made sure to take note of this. Those two could be me in the future. Of course, I didn't have such moral problems, but what if the Church just directly sent me to my death in a suicide mission?I shook my head and kept it clear while waiting for the two to decide. The boy with white hair decided as he took a step forward and started eating the mangled flesh from the floor, just like an animal, his eyes were watering, but he conti
After a day of training, I returned to my residence, meeting with the two new squad mates. Who were now a little bit more refreshed after resting.Zerath looked at me with a serious expression as he covered Mawi with his body, making sure that I wasn't going to do anything to them.I shook my head. They were quite untrusting, but that didn't matter.I sat down and started to regulate my breathing according to the information residing in the basic sword technique. While I couldn't improve or learn further, the breathing technique could make my mind clearer and give me a better rest. The information I got from eating the prisoners even stated that the technique would heal wounds once it reached a high level, but none of the people that I ate reached said level with the technique, and even if they did, I would need to eat quite a few of them to reach the same level as they did. This wasn't something that I could look forward to.I shook my head, clearing it using the breathing technique
