The further we went into the prison, the weaker the pressure from the inmates was.
Of course, they were all still stronger than me, but since they were chained and jailed, they couldn't unleash their whole aura.
Aratas stopped in front of a particular jail before he knocked on the bars, making the person sitting in the darkness come up.
He was an emaciated old man with a deep scar running over his nose and left eye. He had an aura around him that felt like he had seen quite some things in his life, and his eyes were empty of all emotions.
It looked like he was on the verge of death, but his emaciated body was full of vitality, I could sense that through my newly stabilized power which I awakened from eating Aratas's previous squire.
It wasn't anything special, it was just the start of reaching 'superhuman' strength, speed, and senses.
Aratas looked at the old man before saying:
"It's your time, Old man Skartion. You finally get to pay for your betrayal of the church with your life."
Skartion didn't say anything as he looked down at me and nodded before Aratas opened the jail's bars, letting the man take a few steps forward.
Aratas looked down at me and said:
"What are you waiting for? Go!"
The last time I ate his squire was because of the adrenaline and near-death situation that put me on the edge, and with those experiences, it became way easier to eat another human being a second time.
My sword easily went through the old man's neck, severing his head in one fell swoop as Skartion didn't put up even a small resistance against his death.
There was a relieved expression on his face as one tear fell out of his tired eyes before the head dropped to the underground floor.
Aratas looked at me and waited, I couldn't help but feel a little bit awkward to be watched eating, but I did anyways, easily getting rid of the body at a speed that I didn't think would be possible.
I usually didn't eat that quickly, but it looked like the cannibal gene in my body was continuously awakening which in turn was increasing my eating speed. That was my guess.
The head was the last bit that needed to be eaten, but Aratas stopped me as he put his hand on my shoulder, making my whole body tremble and paralyzing as it collapsed on the floor.
I shook like I had seizures before an immense pain hit me directly in the chest. My second heart was slowly stabilizing as it grew to normal size, finally rivaling my first one.
After that, the pain subsided, and I could feel a rush of energy exploding in my body, reaching every corner of it and reinvigorating me back to full health. I could feel my strength explode from every inch of my skin, bones, and organs as I took in a deep breath and jumped up from the floor.
Aratas put a hand under his chin as he took another look at me and said:
"You jumped one rank into the Squire category just by eating that old man? Cannibals are truly special, but let's see if you will gain some of his battle experience and knowledge about our Church's fighting style after you eat his head. After all, brute strength without any skill can't get you very far on the battlefield."
I took one step towards the head before devouring it in one gulp, as I evolved once more, my physical changes were done once more, my teeth became even sharper, and I was able to open my mouth wider, just as if I was a snake, and my previous bald head was now full of short red hair.
I could feel it growing out of my scalp.
I cracked my knuckles as I felt a slight pain in my head, but the memories that I gained from the old man were even fewer than what I gained from the young squire.
They only complemented some of the forms that I barely learned through the forceful integration of memories. With these memories, I completed four forms of fighting style out of the total twelve that the basic swordsmanship of the Church had.
I breathed out and looked at Aratas as I reported:
"I was able to complete four forms of the swordsmanship after I finished eating his brain."
Aratas nodded and responded:
"Show me."
I took off my sword from my waist before I did four moves quickly one after the other, slowly slicing the air in front of me almost as if I was dancing, but the dance was quickly cut off, making me stay in an awkward position because of my lack of proficiency in the last eight forms.
Unfortunately, if I didn't learn at least four more forms, the swordsmanship was unusable in a life and death battle.
Aratas nodded and made a note:
"It looks like consuming brains of people who know things that you have already got an understanding off will not need you to trigger those techniques through some more training, but Skartion wasn't only a good swordsman while he served our Church."
Aratas immediately placed his hand on the Warhammer behind his body, making my whole body tense up as I got a vision of what was going to happen next, my whole body would be squashed by the Warhammer, transforming into a puddle of meat before I would be incinerated by a sudden burst of flames that would explode from the Warhammer.
My head hurt as I writhed on the floor. The vision that I got made blood drip from my nose and ears while Aratas nodded his head, pointed a finger at me, healing me using his holy fire, and then asked:
"What did you see?"
My head still hurt as only my outer physical injuries were healed, I barely got up wobbly on my feet as I told him everything that I saw.
Aratas smiled slightly as he said:
"Good, you inherited his oracle ability. It will serve you well in battle, but you will need to get used to the side effects before we send you to the battlefield. I think I understand the limitations of cannibals now. We should move on to the next place to see if there are more limitations to this perverse ability."
I clutched my head and followed Aratas from behind as my eyes glowed red for a slight amount of time, blinding me temporarily.
After I regained my vision, I could see that we were standing in front of another jail.Inside it sat two middle-aged men with impressive physiques and scars running all over their faces, making them unrecognizable.Even though their physiques were impressive, it was obvious they were both starving and dehydrated from the color of their skin and the way their bones protruded from some places on their exposed skin.Aratas opened the jail bars and made both of them walk slowly forward as they glanced at each other before they tried to attack Aratas in a combination of moves, but Aratas easily grabbed both of their heads and smashed them together, but not strong enough to knock them out. They were disoriented, but after they quickly regained their wits, their eyes moved towards me, and then they decided to switch targets after they understood they weren't Aratas's match. My eyes narrowed as I saw a vision before I took a sidestep, unsheathed my sword, and decapitated one of the men in on
Aratas helped me up and said:"You have overexerted yourself after this stunt. It's better to get you someplace to rest before we continue."I followed Aratas out of the catacombs as we got back into the Church, then we exited and left towards the back of the Church, where multiple small houses sat there quietly, quite a lot of young men and women could be seen either praying, training with their swords, or meditating. They were all squires in training for the other paladins of the Church, who were now out on combat missions.Aratas waved his hand towards one of the male squires and said:"Make sure this young man gets an appropriate accommodation, he had been training very hard, and he needs a good rest."The young man nodded, but it was obvious from his gaze that he had ill will towards me.If I guess correctly, Mirato must have told them about my peculiarity, which in turn made them hostile towards me.Being a cannibal meant that I was going to be ostracized even though Aratas appr
I could feel my body restoring itself slowly as I sat down on the floor of the dilapidated house. It could heal faster than before, but I still vividly remembered when I had almost become mush, making me shudder for a few seconds as I understood the mortality of the human body. This wasn't something that could be avoided, but I knew that as I devoured more and more, my body should evolve accordingly, just like it made my teeth sharper and changed the color of my eyes and hair. The surroundings were eerily quiet as I was resting, the previous hustle and bustle from all of the training squire seemingly disappeared into the void as they were most likely avoiding me. Their fear was evident from their actions, they most likely thought that I was going to attack them. I sighed and shook my head, I felt deep inside that my body wasn't ready for any more devouring sessions, so I had to wait, even if I wanted to eat them, I couldn't, and I wasn't sure what type of reaction the Chuch would
A day and a good night's rest was almost enough for me to get back to full power, my regenerative capabilities had increased immensely after that near-death experience, and even though my body was unable to absorb all of the energy that I got from eating the last two people, I still improved in all areas.I clenched my fists as I got up from the floor of the broken house that I was in before I stretched my body and got out to be greeted by the first ray of sunlight that slowly came down from the morning sky.It was a beautiful sunrise that I didn't get to enjoy when I lived as a bandit. It was always killing pillaging, and doing things that made me uncomfortable until I became numb to them. Of course, now they brought a rush to me that I had no idea how to explain besides the fact that I most likely got addicted to doing those things.I sighed and shook my head as Shira slowly made her way toward my house. She still seemed a little bit unsure about me since she was walking very slowly
After one day of getting my body used to the forms of swordsmanship, I decided to go back to rest after I bid farewell to Shira for the day.My sleep was just like a baby's, soft and long until the rays of dawn hit me in the face and woke me up.But that wasn't the only thing that woke me up, I could hear some knocks at the door of the house, and when I got up and opened it, I saw Aratas's tall body waiting for me.He looked down at me and said:"You have to meet your new comrades on the battlefield. It has also been a few days since you rested. Do you feel like you can eat more?"I looked down at my stabilized hands and thought for a few seconds before nodding. I was looking forward to completing the set of basic swordsmanship. And to see my new comrades, which I will most likely have to make contingency plans against, just in case the hunger will betray them on the battlefield, and they would attack "allied" troops. We went back into the Church, then took the long corridor to the du
The two remaining teens were quite shaken. They weren't sure if they were going to follow Arata's words or not. The girl even took a step forward and asked meekly:"Do we truly have to eat them? Can't we give them a proper burial?"Aratas shook his head and then said:"They have failed, thus they cannot enjoy a proper burial. Maybe if they made some contributions to the Church, but they haven't done anything to deserve a proper burial. You two, eat them now!"Arata's eyes were serious as he unleashed a little of his aura to coerce them.I narrowed my eyes and made sure to take note of this. Those two could be me in the future. Of course, I didn't have such moral problems, but what if the Church just directly sent me to my death in a suicide mission?I shook my head and kept it clear while waiting for the two to decide. The boy with white hair decided as he took a step forward and started eating the mangled flesh from the floor, just like an animal, his eyes were watering, but he conti
After a day of training, I returned to my residence, meeting with the two new squad mates. Who were now a little bit more refreshed after resting.Zerath looked at me with a serious expression as he covered Mawi with his body, making sure that I wasn't going to do anything to them.I shook my head. They were quite untrusting, but that didn't matter.I sat down and started to regulate my breathing according to the information residing in the basic sword technique. While I couldn't improve or learn further, the breathing technique could make my mind clearer and give me a better rest. The information I got from eating the prisoners even stated that the technique would heal wounds once it reached a high level, but none of the people that I ate reached said level with the technique, and even if they did, I would need to eat quite a few of them to reach the same level as they did. This wasn't something that I could look forward to.I shook my head, clearing it using the breathing technique
Somehow I wasn't impeded at all when I left the training grounds and started taking a stroll through the city.Maybe they didn't monitor us as harshly as I thought? Or maybe they didn't care at all, considering the thing that was currently residing within me.I walked around, however, most of the people in the city were rushing in and out, going to shops to buy things, or straight going up to rest at inns. None of them wanted to chat with me at all.I wanted to find a place where I could get some help regarding the slithering thing inside of me, but where could I go?The city was rather big, so I wandered around. The Church was the second biggest building and one of the most important landmarks in the city, so according to this, I decided to go to the biggest building in the city and find out if there was anything important there. The biggest building was a long tower that stretched up into the sky.The entrance of the tower wasn't guarded at all, and I entered it quite easily. The lo
