After I regained my vision, I could see that we were standing in front of another jail.
Inside it sat two middle-aged men with impressive physiques and scars running all over their faces, making them unrecognizable.
Even though their physiques were impressive, it was obvious they were both starving and dehydrated from the color of their skin and the way their bones protruded from some places on their exposed skin.
Aratas opened the jail bars and made both of them walk slowly forward as they glanced at each other before they tried to attack Aratas in a combination of moves, but Aratas easily grabbed both of their heads and smashed them together, but not strong enough to knock them out.
They were disoriented, but after they quickly regained their wits, their eyes moved towards me, and then they decided to switch targets after they understood they weren't Aratas's match.
My eyes narrowed as I saw a vision before I took a sidestep, unsheathed my sword, and decapitated one of the men in one swift motion.
Seeing the future and preparing an immediate counter was a very strong ability, unfortunately, I only got a fragment of that ability, and I was unable to resist the side effects, I dropped my sword immediately as a wave of pain struck me directly, paralyzing my body and making blood drip from my eyes and nose at the same time.
I could feel my strength being sapped at an extremely quick speed as the remaining prisoner picked up my sword and he was ready to loop off my head just like I did to his cellmate.
I gritted my teeth and bit my tongue, making a sudden move at the last second. The sword missed my neck and drew a scary scar on it, making blood slowly start gushing out and if I didn't seal the wound soon, I would surely die, but I knew that with Aratas there, I could afford this.
I took one step forward, making the stunned prisoner regain his wits and try to kill me once again, but now it was too late. One second of being distracted would change the result of the life and death fight!
My newly sharpened teeth bit into the prisoner's shoulder, making him wince as I used my newly acquire strength to rip his arm off his body!
My sword dropped to the ground below as it made a clattering sound while the prisoner shouted in pain, clutching the stump where his previous right arm stood.
That's when my eyes became crazed as they widened and I rushed directly towards his neck, ripping it off just like I did to Aratas's previous squire.
I drank the blood and started eating the bodies until something didn't feel right. I finished consuming both of the skulls when my body started twitching. The pain from before came in waves, but this time around something was different.
The changes in my body weren't beneficial anymore, and I could feel that I was splitting at the seams, ready to break into pieces and explode!
My eyes widened as I clutched my head and started trashing on the floor while Aratas looked at me with cold eyes and said:
"It looks like there is a limit on how many bodies you can eat before your organs will fail to sustain you because of the sudden changes that happen to them every time you ingest an expert."
Aratas waved his hand, making some of my pain go away, but things didn't seem to get better as Aratas continued:
"It looks like the special magic of the Church doesn't work on someone who disintegrates from the inside, the damage is done at the same time as the healing, so they cancel each other out. It looks like I'm destined to have no worthy squire."
Aratas sighed as he looked down at me and waited for my self-destruction.
I could feel all the blood in my body boiling, making my skin turn red as I started sweating blood.
The bones in my body made strange crunching noises as they broke all over, starting with my arms and legs, moving to my chest, and then my skull was fracturing, I could feel it in my whole body as I screamed soundlessly due to my tearing voice chords.
My teeth were falling out of my mouth, and my hair was sticking to my skull as it became filled with blood.
I was disintegrating.
I could feel it, my body was self-destructing, but I wasn't done with life yet!
Those foolish bandits took eight years out of my peaceful life, transforming me into what I was today, a bastard, someone without family, a criminal, a cannibal. It was all their fault! I couldn't live normally with my parents, being a peasant who lived off the land.
So if I couldn't live peacefully, then why should anyone else?!
What did I do wrong when I was barely 7 years old, what did I do to deserve all of this!?!?!?
I ignored all of the pain as I punched the floor below me, making my mangled arm break even further as bone shards left the opening on my knuckles, I tried to get up, but I had fallen back down just like a puppet whose strings had been cut off.
I wasn't ready to die yet, my will didn't let me die yet!
I saw my father's death, I didn't know if my mother lived, my whole life was a failure, I had no talent to become an expert, but I still will become one by devouring others!
Tears of blood dripped from my breaking eyes as I clenched my gums together, my body stopped trembling as new sharper teeth grew out of my gums, and the bones in my body grew out of the fragmented shards, rekindling a skeleton in my mangled flesh.
My failed organs started to work once again as my two hearts worked in tandem to pump blood through my body, and my hurting head that was split open started to close as my grey matter now sat where it was supposed to.
Aratas's eyes widened and his mouth opened as he saw all of the changes happening to me, he couldn't help but wave his hand as he tried to help me regenerate all the extensive damage done by the devouring failure.
The holy fire worked its magic as I could feel my body once again, I tried to get up, but a sharp pain that strung my nerves high to hell made me scream in the catacombs. The scream traveled through the whole underground as Aratas helped me up and said:
"I didn't believe you would come back from that, you weren't more than a puddle of flesh before your body started to regather itself..."
"It looks like because you didn't fall unconscious, the self-destruction stopped after all the energy from the flesh you consumed was expended, and it seems that strength-wise, you even took a step forward."
I glanced down at my trembling hands and clenched them, slight thunder sounds could then be heard coming from them as they traveled through the whole underground.
My strength had increased, but the pain and the position where I stood, one foot into the grave wasn't worth it, if I didn't hold on because I was disappointed by the failure that I could call my life, I would have died then and there.
I gritted my teeth and sighed as now I knew that there should be a delay between the bodies that I eat if I didn't want to implode like before. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to hold on a second time if that happened again.
Aratas helped me up and said:"You have overexerted yourself after this stunt. It's better to get you someplace to rest before we continue."I followed Aratas out of the catacombs as we got back into the Church, then we exited and left towards the back of the Church, where multiple small houses sat there quietly, quite a lot of young men and women could be seen either praying, training with their swords, or meditating. They were all squires in training for the other paladins of the Church, who were now out on combat missions.Aratas waved his hand towards one of the male squires and said:"Make sure this young man gets an appropriate accommodation, he had been training very hard, and he needs a good rest."The young man nodded, but it was obvious from his gaze that he had ill will towards me.If I guess correctly, Mirato must have told them about my peculiarity, which in turn made them hostile towards me.Being a cannibal meant that I was going to be ostracized even though Aratas appr
I could feel my body restoring itself slowly as I sat down on the floor of the dilapidated house. It could heal faster than before, but I still vividly remembered when I had almost become mush, making me shudder for a few seconds as I understood the mortality of the human body. This wasn't something that could be avoided, but I knew that as I devoured more and more, my body should evolve accordingly, just like it made my teeth sharper and changed the color of my eyes and hair. The surroundings were eerily quiet as I was resting, the previous hustle and bustle from all of the training squire seemingly disappeared into the void as they were most likely avoiding me. Their fear was evident from their actions, they most likely thought that I was going to attack them. I sighed and shook my head, I felt deep inside that my body wasn't ready for any more devouring sessions, so I had to wait, even if I wanted to eat them, I couldn't, and I wasn't sure what type of reaction the Chuch would
A day and a good night's rest was almost enough for me to get back to full power, my regenerative capabilities had increased immensely after that near-death experience, and even though my body was unable to absorb all of the energy that I got from eating the last two people, I still improved in all areas.I clenched my fists as I got up from the floor of the broken house that I was in before I stretched my body and got out to be greeted by the first ray of sunlight that slowly came down from the morning sky.It was a beautiful sunrise that I didn't get to enjoy when I lived as a bandit. It was always killing pillaging, and doing things that made me uncomfortable until I became numb to them. Of course, now they brought a rush to me that I had no idea how to explain besides the fact that I most likely got addicted to doing those things.I sighed and shook my head as Shira slowly made her way toward my house. She still seemed a little bit unsure about me since she was walking very slowly
After one day of getting my body used to the forms of swordsmanship, I decided to go back to rest after I bid farewell to Shira for the day.My sleep was just like a baby's, soft and long until the rays of dawn hit me in the face and woke me up.But that wasn't the only thing that woke me up, I could hear some knocks at the door of the house, and when I got up and opened it, I saw Aratas's tall body waiting for me.He looked down at me and said:"You have to meet your new comrades on the battlefield. It has also been a few days since you rested. Do you feel like you can eat more?"I looked down at my stabilized hands and thought for a few seconds before nodding. I was looking forward to completing the set of basic swordsmanship. And to see my new comrades, which I will most likely have to make contingency plans against, just in case the hunger will betray them on the battlefield, and they would attack "allied" troops. We went back into the Church, then took the long corridor to the du
The two remaining teens were quite shaken. They weren't sure if they were going to follow Arata's words or not. The girl even took a step forward and asked meekly:"Do we truly have to eat them? Can't we give them a proper burial?"Aratas shook his head and then said:"They have failed, thus they cannot enjoy a proper burial. Maybe if they made some contributions to the Church, but they haven't done anything to deserve a proper burial. You two, eat them now!"Arata's eyes were serious as he unleashed a little of his aura to coerce them.I narrowed my eyes and made sure to take note of this. Those two could be me in the future. Of course, I didn't have such moral problems, but what if the Church just directly sent me to my death in a suicide mission?I shook my head and kept it clear while waiting for the two to decide. The boy with white hair decided as he took a step forward and started eating the mangled flesh from the floor, just like an animal, his eyes were watering, but he conti
After a day of training, I returned to my residence, meeting with the two new squad mates. Who were now a little bit more refreshed after resting.Zerath looked at me with a serious expression as he covered Mawi with his body, making sure that I wasn't going to do anything to them.I shook my head. They were quite untrusting, but that didn't matter.I sat down and started to regulate my breathing according to the information residing in the basic sword technique. While I couldn't improve or learn further, the breathing technique could make my mind clearer and give me a better rest. The information I got from eating the prisoners even stated that the technique would heal wounds once it reached a high level, but none of the people that I ate reached said level with the technique, and even if they did, I would need to eat quite a few of them to reach the same level as they did. This wasn't something that I could look forward to.I shook my head, clearing it using the breathing technique
Somehow I wasn't impeded at all when I left the training grounds and started taking a stroll through the city.Maybe they didn't monitor us as harshly as I thought? Or maybe they didn't care at all, considering the thing that was currently residing within me.I walked around, however, most of the people in the city were rushing in and out, going to shops to buy things, or straight going up to rest at inns. None of them wanted to chat with me at all.I wanted to find a place where I could get some help regarding the slithering thing inside of me, but where could I go?The city was rather big, so I wandered around. The Church was the second biggest building and one of the most important landmarks in the city, so according to this, I decided to go to the biggest building in the city and find out if there was anything important there. The biggest building was a long tower that stretched up into the sky.The entrance of the tower wasn't guarded at all, and I entered it quite easily. The lo
I decided to nod toward the healer and take up his offer:"I will do it, but hopefully you guys won't back out or do something else to me while he analyses whatever he needs to."The healer chuckled and shook his head as he told me:"That would be no problem. We the mage guild pride ourselves in our ability to hold up the bargains we make, don't worry."I didn't know much about the reputation of the mage guild, but up till now, they looked like an upright organization. Of course, they must have had their dark side, just like any other place with considerable power.I got up from the table and the healer waved his hand, indicating for me to follow behind him.We left the white room through an indistinguishable door, making our way through corridors that looked like we were in a maze before entering a dark room with a chilly atmosphere. The darkness was profound, but my improved eyesight let me spot a person hiding inside of it, sitting on a chair behind what should be a desk, if the ou
