After one day of getting my body used to the forms of swordsmanship, I decided to go back to rest after I bid farewell to Shira for the day.
My sleep was just like a baby's, soft and long until the rays of dawn hit me in the face and woke me up.
But that wasn't the only thing that woke me up, I could hear some knocks at the door of the house, and when I got up and opened it, I saw Aratas's tall body waiting for me.
He looked down at me and said:
"You have to meet your new comrades on the battlefield. It has also been a few days since you rested. Do you feel like you can eat more?"
I looked down at my stabilized hands and thought for a few seconds before nodding. I was looking forward to completing the set of basic swordsmanship.
And to see my new comrades, which I will most likely have to make contingency plans against, just in case the hunger will betray them on the battlefield, and they would attack "allied" troops.
We went back into the Church, then took the long corridor to the dungeons below.
The first things I saw when we entered the dungeons were four other teens around my age or one year younger, three boys and one girl.
The boys were rather weak, having bony bodies, and smudged faces that made them look like they came out of a chimney. Respectively, the boys had, dark, brown, and white hair.
The sole girl wasn't in a better condition than the boys when it came to her body, hers was just hidden behind a plain baggy cloth that covered her body while theirs was there to see as they wore no shirt and only some ripped pants, but with my improved senses, I could see how weak she was. Her dark yellow hair also looked like a bird's nest.
This was a rather sad setup, four orphans? Well, it made sense to be orphans. They would be easier to control once they became fanatics of the Church, and seeing how they were being given 'goodwill' they would surely try to repay it for the remainder of their lives.
I knew some of those psychological. After all, one of them was used on me so I can become a bandit.
I shook my head and said:
"Before we can start, I have a favor to ask."
Aratas looked down at me, surprised by my words, and he asked:
"Favor, what kind of favor?"
I glanced at the orphans silently before I responded:
"My mother has been sold eight years ago. I'm not sure if she is alive or not. Could you put the Church's men to search for her?"
Aratas nodded and said:
"A simple thing, slaves go through the Church's examinations and channels before they are given to the buyer, we even have a ledger that records such things. If you know that it happened eight years ago, it's rather easy to find."
I nodded back and shook my head before saying:
"Then we can move on."
Aratas glanced toward the four orphans and waved his hand before saying:
"Today you will get to eat your fill, but don't eat too much or you will get sick."
He glanced at me before saying:
"You can eat at most three of the items before you will stop for a few days. Do you understand?"
The children nodded hastily as they wouldn't want to miss a meal. Regardless of the delay between the next one and this one.
We went further into the dungeon before we reached the last place where I had eaten. The next jail towards the last one where I ate was filled with a few convicts.
They were all rather scared when they saw me, as they knew what happened and how I survived that liquidation of my body.
And they didn't particularly want to be eaten. Regardless if they lost their will to live or not, I'm pretty sure the way they wanted to be going out wasn't to be eaten.
However, Aratas didn't care about the way they wanted to die, nor did I.
He ripped the jail bars open before he looked at me and said:
"You should be the one taking care of these 'meals', for starters, the other four are too weak to start these pseudo training."
I nodded and decided to make myself look good in front of my future squad mates. I killed all six men in one fell swoop, using my sword to decapitate or stab them in the heart, giving all of them a quick death.
I feasted on one of them before I felt the imbalance from before coming right back, so I stopped going further. I looked at their nauseated, but also hungry expressions.
Aratas was smart, taking these hungry street urchins to eat these men.
If he took some of the ones that were doing rather decently, they would have second thoughts about eating human meat.
But these kids must have thought about cannibalization before. They just didn't have the strength to act upon it.
But now that all of this fresh meat was in front of them, they couldn't help but ignore their nausea before they started eating, feasting on the flesh of their fellow men.
They ate, and the changes started happening immediately, just like me, their eyes turned, their teeth sharpened and slowly elongated before their hair turned the same color as their eyes.
The changes were immediate, and so was the pain accompanying them.
The corpses were gone, leaving only some blood on the floor below that was almost scrapped clean by the four trashing teens on the floor.
Their bodies regained some proportion from their previously bony side, but they still were on the skinny level.
I could see the changes in their bodies happen in live time, and examining them made me think about my changes, they should be growing a second heart at this time.
However, it looked like some of them couldn't endure the pain from the changes and they fainted, two of the boys fainted, the one with brown hair, and the one with dark, and before Aratas could do anything, they transformed into pools of mangled flesh and blood.
The transformation needed an awakened mind for it to happen, or else the energy from the eaten experts would go crazy haywire into the body and destroy them in seconds.
Going overboard was one way of destroying your body, but the other was being unable to withstand the changes and fainting.
I shook my head and looked at the remaining boy and girl duo, they were gritting their teeth as they held on, and soon enough, the pain receded.
Their bodies were full of cold sweat as they got up on two wobbly feet before they looked at me with a scared expression, wondering how I was able to withstand the pain and transformation from eating a fellow human, considering their other two companions ended up dead.
I looked down at the pools of mangled flesh and blood and asked Aratas:
"What are we doing with these two?"
Aratas glanced down uninterested before responding:
"We shouldn't waste anything, should we?"
He glanced towards the other two before saying:
"He went through two of these phases before his body was unable to hold on anymore, each of you should eat one pile of flesh. This is your third and final meal for a few days."
The two new cannibals looked at each other and saw the uncertainty in their eyes. Eating strangers that had already been killed by someone else was one thing, but eating the remains of the people that you had been with for years?
I looked back at Aratas and shook my head. Did he gather people that knew each other? The seemingly gentle but strong paladin had a cruel side to him, which made me even more alert against the Church.
I should be thinking twice about what I should do from now on before I was strong enough to cross them.
The two remaining teens were quite shaken. They weren't sure if they were going to follow Arata's words or not. The girl even took a step forward and asked meekly:"Do we truly have to eat them? Can't we give them a proper burial?"Aratas shook his head and then said:"They have failed, thus they cannot enjoy a proper burial. Maybe if they made some contributions to the Church, but they haven't done anything to deserve a proper burial. You two, eat them now!"Arata's eyes were serious as he unleashed a little of his aura to coerce them.I narrowed my eyes and made sure to take note of this. Those two could be me in the future. Of course, I didn't have such moral problems, but what if the Church just directly sent me to my death in a suicide mission?I shook my head and kept it clear while waiting for the two to decide. The boy with white hair decided as he took a step forward and started eating the mangled flesh from the floor, just like an animal, his eyes were watering, but he conti
After a day of training, I returned to my residence, meeting with the two new squad mates. Who were now a little bit more refreshed after resting.Zerath looked at me with a serious expression as he covered Mawi with his body, making sure that I wasn't going to do anything to them.I shook my head. They were quite untrusting, but that didn't matter.I sat down and started to regulate my breathing according to the information residing in the basic sword technique. While I couldn't improve or learn further, the breathing technique could make my mind clearer and give me a better rest. The information I got from eating the prisoners even stated that the technique would heal wounds once it reached a high level, but none of the people that I ate reached said level with the technique, and even if they did, I would need to eat quite a few of them to reach the same level as they did. This wasn't something that I could look forward to.I shook my head, clearing it using the breathing technique
Somehow I wasn't impeded at all when I left the training grounds and started taking a stroll through the city.Maybe they didn't monitor us as harshly as I thought? Or maybe they didn't care at all, considering the thing that was currently residing within me.I walked around, however, most of the people in the city were rushing in and out, going to shops to buy things, or straight going up to rest at inns. None of them wanted to chat with me at all.I wanted to find a place where I could get some help regarding the slithering thing inside of me, but where could I go?The city was rather big, so I wandered around. The Church was the second biggest building and one of the most important landmarks in the city, so according to this, I decided to go to the biggest building in the city and find out if there was anything important there. The biggest building was a long tower that stretched up into the sky.The entrance of the tower wasn't guarded at all, and I entered it quite easily. The lo
I decided to nod toward the healer and take up his offer:"I will do it, but hopefully you guys won't back out or do something else to me while he analyses whatever he needs to."The healer chuckled and shook his head as he told me:"That would be no problem. We the mage guild pride ourselves in our ability to hold up the bargains we make, don't worry."I didn't know much about the reputation of the mage guild, but up till now, they looked like an upright organization. Of course, they must have had their dark side, just like any other place with considerable power.I got up from the table and the healer waved his hand, indicating for me to follow behind him.We left the white room through an indistinguishable door, making our way through corridors that looked like we were in a maze before entering a dark room with a chilly atmosphere. The darkness was profound, but my improved eyesight let me spot a person hiding inside of it, sitting on a chair behind what should be a desk, if the ou
After I got back to the Church, things seemed to be rather calm on the surface.Zerath and Miwa were being ostracized by the other trainees when I arrived back at the training camp. For now, I didn't have any intentions to interact with them. They would most likely be deadweight in the future, so they weren't people that I needed to create a good relationship with. The only person who got my attention was Shira. Her improvements were as quick, or even quicker than mine!I couldn't help but be a little jealous as I saw her concentrated expression as she swung a wooden training sword. Her aura was gradually increasing with every swing as she showed all twelve basic moves of the Church's swordsmanship. Her mastery over them was beautiful but deadly. Her agility and strength could be easily observed from the way her firm muscles exploded with power at every swing she did.I couldn't help but shake my head as I saw Zerath and Miwa try to walk toward me.The whispering between the other tra
I, Miwa, and Zerath were resting inside of the somewhat broken house. Both Zerath and Miwa couldn't sleep properly as they were thinking about what type of mission they would be given tomorrow.I didn't particularly care about the mission. As long as it was an extermination one, it will be quick and easy to do.With my current strength, I knew that there weren't many bandits or other types of lawbreakers that could match me. It would only be a problem if a fought a fellow superhuman or someone from the other four Churches.Zerath and Miwa didn't interact with me at all during our cohabitation. They knew that I didn't want to be bothered, so they acted accordingly, at least they weren't dumb, even though they were still rather weak and naive. However, this was the first time in a while had Zerath asked me something:"Minato, do you think we will have trouble with the mission tomorrow?"I looked towards him and didn't say anything for a few seconds before shaking my head and saying:"Pr
The two of my teammates looked at each other, and they wanted to tell me something. Most likely they wanted to team up with me so they would have an easier time dealing with the bandits. But I had no intention of helping them, my body moved at quick speeds, leaving the two of them wondering where I had left, but I was already in the small village, looking for the inn, which was the most likely place to be able to find information. The village was small, so finding the inn was very easy. I entered it and went directly to the bar, where I put a bronze coin on and asked while eyeing the barman's reaction:"I heard there is a band of bandits troubling villages around these parts."The barman started sweating slightly as he put a glass of ale in front of me.He didn't seem to want to respond to my question or even engage in a conversation, so I downed the ale and put my hands over the counter, lifting him in the air and asking:"I'm not in the mood for the silent game, just tell me where t
As I made my way to the cornfield, I could sense that someone else entered the wheat field behind me, it was most likely those two who finally put two and two together and found the first bandit hideout, but it was a little bit late for them to showcase their ability in that location.I shook my head. Gathering information and finding the base of the enemy should also be a test that they were failing right now.Coming second after everything had been taken care of couldn't be considered an accomplishment.Well, they were on their own.I made my way towards the cornfield, which was rather obvious to spot, even from a distance. This time around, I decided against sneaking around since the bandits must have put something in the fields that would notify them if anyone entered.I listened closely, using my improved hearing before I started to make my way through the cornfield until I found them. They were in a similar formation to the previous ones. However, if I could deal with the others
