The two remaining teens were quite shaken. They weren't sure if they were going to follow Arata's words or not. The girl even took a step forward and asked meekly:
"Do we truly have to eat them? Can't we give them a proper burial?"
Aratas shook his head and then said:
"They have failed, thus they cannot enjoy a proper burial. Maybe if they made some contributions to the Church, but they haven't done anything to deserve a proper burial. You two, eat them now!"
Arata's eyes were serious as he unleashed a little of his aura to coerce them.
I narrowed my eyes and made sure to take note of this.
Those two could be me in the future. Of course, I didn't have such moral problems, but what if the Church just directly sent me to my death in a suicide mission?
I shook my head and kept it clear while waiting for the two to decide.
The boy with white hair decided as he took a step forward and started eating the mangled flesh from the floor, just like an animal, his eyes were watering, but he continued to eat, not gagging even once.
The girl took a step forward and looked at the remaining broken flesh and blood on the floor, some tears started to seep out of her eyes as she gritted her now sharp teeth before she started doing the same with it.
However, her reaction was relatively strong, she gagged, and she choked, and lastly, she almost wanted to tear the meat out of her body, but in the end, she swallowed and cried mutely.
She knew that the death of her close friends was going to come sooner or later, and she knew that she was going to be sad when it happened, but what she didn't know was that she had to eat their remains!
"Good"
That was the single word that Aratas said as he observed the changes made to their bodies and psyches.
"From now on, you will live and die for the Church. You are the beneficiaries of a very important project, and you will get to live nicely until you will have to pay us back for our 'hospitality'"
There was no free lunch in the world. The other two knew that, so they bowed and didn't say anything else.
Aratas looked at me and said:
"Go and arrange some good place for them to rest before they start to get accustomed to their newly changed bodies. You will have to wait a few days before I will come back to get you more 'food'."
I nodded slightly and we left the dungeon and Church. We were now back at the training camp.
Shira waved at me and was surprised to see two recruits, but seeing the similarities between all of us, she could draw two and two together.
And so could most of the other children who were training.
A crowd started to gather around us, and some of them even started shouting:
"Even more freakish heretics? What are the higher-ups doing?! One was bad enough, but now there are three of them?"
Before things could escalate, Mirato arrived at the training ground and pacified things while throwing the three of us a dirty glance that was also quite obvious to the crowd of trainees.
They gloated inside, knowing that we weren't being looked on favorably by the head nun of this Church.
But that didn't matter. Mirato told them that no fighting was allowed between us and them. And that they should leave us alone if they didn't want the trouble that they couldn't withstand.
While she most likely hated us, she knew that we would fight on the battlefield later and that we need to be at peak strength for the Fire God Church to win, let's not even mention the fact that Aratas most likely forced her to be 'nice' to us.
Shira was the only one who approached me and the other two. I learned they were called Zerath and Mawi.
"Minato, are you ok?"
I nodded and responded easily:
"I know all of them have their prejudices. After all, what we have done is considered forbidden, but don't forget that we are doing this for the Church."
Shira nodded and patted me on the shoulder before she looked at Zerath and Mawi, giving them a toothy smile before saying:
"Yeah, we should all work hard for the Church and Lord Aprathos' blessings."
I nodded back and I and my new team decided to make our way back to the dilapidated house to rest.
Well, they needed it, so I showed them the way before I went back to the training grounds to get even more familiar with the eight moves of the basic swordsmanship which I ingrained into my brain from eating the last prisoner.
Shira was already there, sweat going down her chiseled abdomen as the muscles on her back tightened while she swung the sword forcefully but gracefully at the same time.
The strength from her sword swings was so high that the air was cut cleanly, leaving behind a sound that resembled thunder!
Her strength was increasing every day, improving and reaching levels that made me rather jealous.
My strength increased slightly after I ate that last prisoner, but the training didn't help me improve at all, and I didn't truly understand the moves that I stole through devouring.
I could do them as well as the former person learned them, and I couldn't improve them either. They stagnated at the peak level that the last person I had eaten knew.
If I was honest, the previous levels also improved slightly as I continued to eat more, but the improvements were negligible at best.
My mind wandered while my body got used to the eight form before going through the first to the eight.
Shira couldn't help but take a glance at me, seeing how I already learned and seemingly 'mastered' the eighth form made her quite surprised, but also happy for me and the Church as a whole.
I gave her a nod and stopped training. I wasn't particularly tired, but I knew that sooner or later, some preventive measures would be put on our bodies so we wouldn't betray the Church, even with the limits of devouring, we would grow insanely strong and insanely fast on a battlefield where death was as common as eating and drinking. I need to prepare for those preventive.
My only way to freedom and strength was the battlefield, it wasn't like the Church was a bad place for me, but my freedom was extremely restricted, and I know that once I became useless to them, they would exterminate me at the first chance they got. After all, I could be considered 'forbidden goods'.
After a day of training, I returned to my residence, meeting with the two new squad mates. Who were now a little bit more refreshed after resting.Zerath looked at me with a serious expression as he covered Mawi with his body, making sure that I wasn't going to do anything to them.I shook my head. They were quite untrusting, but that didn't matter.I sat down and started to regulate my breathing according to the information residing in the basic sword technique. While I couldn't improve or learn further, the breathing technique could make my mind clearer and give me a better rest. The information I got from eating the prisoners even stated that the technique would heal wounds once it reached a high level, but none of the people that I ate reached said level with the technique, and even if they did, I would need to eat quite a few of them to reach the same level as they did. This wasn't something that I could look forward to.I shook my head, clearing it using the breathing technique
Somehow I wasn't impeded at all when I left the training grounds and started taking a stroll through the city.Maybe they didn't monitor us as harshly as I thought? Or maybe they didn't care at all, considering the thing that was currently residing within me.I walked around, however, most of the people in the city were rushing in and out, going to shops to buy things, or straight going up to rest at inns. None of them wanted to chat with me at all.I wanted to find a place where I could get some help regarding the slithering thing inside of me, but where could I go?The city was rather big, so I wandered around. The Church was the second biggest building and one of the most important landmarks in the city, so according to this, I decided to go to the biggest building in the city and find out if there was anything important there. The biggest building was a long tower that stretched up into the sky.The entrance of the tower wasn't guarded at all, and I entered it quite easily. The lo
I decided to nod toward the healer and take up his offer:"I will do it, but hopefully you guys won't back out or do something else to me while he analyses whatever he needs to."The healer chuckled and shook his head as he told me:"That would be no problem. We the mage guild pride ourselves in our ability to hold up the bargains we make, don't worry."I didn't know much about the reputation of the mage guild, but up till now, they looked like an upright organization. Of course, they must have had their dark side, just like any other place with considerable power.I got up from the table and the healer waved his hand, indicating for me to follow behind him.We left the white room through an indistinguishable door, making our way through corridors that looked like we were in a maze before entering a dark room with a chilly atmosphere. The darkness was profound, but my improved eyesight let me spot a person hiding inside of it, sitting on a chair behind what should be a desk, if the ou
After I got back to the Church, things seemed to be rather calm on the surface.Zerath and Miwa were being ostracized by the other trainees when I arrived back at the training camp. For now, I didn't have any intentions to interact with them. They would most likely be deadweight in the future, so they weren't people that I needed to create a good relationship with. The only person who got my attention was Shira. Her improvements were as quick, or even quicker than mine!I couldn't help but be a little jealous as I saw her concentrated expression as she swung a wooden training sword. Her aura was gradually increasing with every swing as she showed all twelve basic moves of the Church's swordsmanship. Her mastery over them was beautiful but deadly. Her agility and strength could be easily observed from the way her firm muscles exploded with power at every swing she did.I couldn't help but shake my head as I saw Zerath and Miwa try to walk toward me.The whispering between the other tra
I, Miwa, and Zerath were resting inside of the somewhat broken house. Both Zerath and Miwa couldn't sleep properly as they were thinking about what type of mission they would be given tomorrow.I didn't particularly care about the mission. As long as it was an extermination one, it will be quick and easy to do.With my current strength, I knew that there weren't many bandits or other types of lawbreakers that could match me. It would only be a problem if a fought a fellow superhuman or someone from the other four Churches.Zerath and Miwa didn't interact with me at all during our cohabitation. They knew that I didn't want to be bothered, so they acted accordingly, at least they weren't dumb, even though they were still rather weak and naive. However, this was the first time in a while had Zerath asked me something:"Minato, do you think we will have trouble with the mission tomorrow?"I looked towards him and didn't say anything for a few seconds before shaking my head and saying:"Pr
The two of my teammates looked at each other, and they wanted to tell me something. Most likely they wanted to team up with me so they would have an easier time dealing with the bandits. But I had no intention of helping them, my body moved at quick speeds, leaving the two of them wondering where I had left, but I was already in the small village, looking for the inn, which was the most likely place to be able to find information. The village was small, so finding the inn was very easy. I entered it and went directly to the bar, where I put a bronze coin on and asked while eyeing the barman's reaction:"I heard there is a band of bandits troubling villages around these parts."The barman started sweating slightly as he put a glass of ale in front of me.He didn't seem to want to respond to my question or even engage in a conversation, so I downed the ale and put my hands over the counter, lifting him in the air and asking:"I'm not in the mood for the silent game, just tell me where t
As I made my way to the cornfield, I could sense that someone else entered the wheat field behind me, it was most likely those two who finally put two and two together and found the first bandit hideout, but it was a little bit late for them to showcase their ability in that location.I shook my head. Gathering information and finding the base of the enemy should also be a test that they were failing right now.Coming second after everything had been taken care of couldn't be considered an accomplishment.Well, they were on their own.I made my way towards the cornfield, which was rather obvious to spot, even from a distance. This time around, I decided against sneaking around since the bandits must have put something in the fields that would notify them if anyone entered.I listened closely, using my improved hearing before I started to make my way through the cornfield until I found them. They were in a similar formation to the previous ones. However, if I could deal with the others
Those two attacked with no tact or plan.I knew they were urchins, but they should have gotten some memories from when they ate those corpses with me.It didn't make sense to do such a frontal attack...What were they up to?I was pretty curious about what their plan could be.They weren't suicidal, were they? From what could I see, their attacks were rather sloppy, and even through the darkness, the head honcho of the bandits didn't have any trouble keeping up with their attacks. He was still very wary of me attacking, after all, he knew that there were three people here, knowing that I was the one that killed all of his subordinates before the other two showed up.He kept his guard up for any sudden attack from his blindside, and he easily kept Miwa and Zerath at bay with his martial abilities. He knew how to swing his fist, his stance was airtight, and besides his sloppy looks, he knew where to hit and when to hit.His ability to block all of Miwa's crazed attacks combined with Zer
