Mason got home that day earlier than usual. He had told Scarlet in the morning that he was going job sourcing but did not disclose where exactly he was going to apply.
“Did you hear the news? It’s the talk all over town!”
“What news?”
Mason feigned ignorance.
“The change in chairman of Microloft! Rita Donovan released an official statement.”
“Called him Mr Wilde. First name undisclosed.”
“Oh! That’s really interesting!” Mason said.
“Could you in any way be related to the Wilde’s? I know I’ve asked before and all.”
“Not at all. Just pure coins except we bear the same last name.”
“Oh, alright.”
That moment, Scarlet got a call.
“Okay, mom.” She said on the phone.
“Grandma wants us all over for dinner.” She said to Mason.
“Myself included?” He asked.
“Of Course! Everyone knows I wouldn’t go if they didn’t include you!”
Scarlet always defended him to her family. She was the perfect wife to him even though it was not a romantic relationship.
They arrived at the Rodney’s mansion and all sat for dinner.
Madam Rodney was at the end of the long table and all her kids and grandkids were sitting around.
“Your suit is a little worn out don’t you think?” Michelle, Scarlet’s sister said to Mason with a smirk on her face.
She was especially fond of making fun of Mason’s clothing much more than anyone else in the family.
“Much better than repeating one designer every other week. We know your wardrobe at this point.”
Mason retorted back, taking a bite out of his food.
Michelle gasped! Mason never talked back to her. What had gotten into him?!
“How dare you speak to my daughter that way?! Apologize immediately you sc*m!” Vivian yelled.
“Mom, Michelle started it.” Scarlet said softly.
“So you will side with this nobody over your own sister?!”
“Michelle needs to be put in her place every now and then. She is the youngest here after all.”
Scarlet shrugged.
“Madam Rodney, have you heard about the new project Microloft is embarking on?” Mason broke the tension with his question.
“Of course I have! Everyone is talking about it.”
“I would like to apply for the role of construction but I’m sure it’s already over-saturated now.”
Mason needed madam Rodney to be interested in the job for his plan to work.
“So you’re just going to give up and not apply?”
“Quit edging grandma on, nobody. If we applied and got rejected it would do bad for our image!”
Jason said.
“And what if you got it?!” Mason said back.
“The position of COO is vacant at Rodneys. How about you task your kids and grandchildren?”
Mason proposed.
She didn’t like where she was going but she bought in.
“Let me hear what you have to say.”
“I propose you give everyone here a task of securing the contract with Microloft. Whoever gets the deal, you appoint as COO.”
Elicia burst out laughing.
“But that’s impossible! We wouldn’t get past the lobby!”
“Quiet child! You have always had such a defeatist mentality!”
“Whoever secures the contract will be appointed as COO!”
Murmurs were heard round the table.
“But what if none of us get it?” Michelle asked.
“Then it never happened.”
Madam Rodney responded.
After the dinner, Scarlet said to Mason
“Why did you plant that idea in her head?”
“You know it’s a lost cause.” She said as she dropped her purse.
“Also, you were a bit harsh to Michelle. You know she’s just a child.”
“You also know she gives me a hard time for no reason.”
Scarlet laughed.
“They all give you a hard time for no reason!”
“I’m sorry Mason, perhaps I’m just biased towards her because she’s my sister.”
“I understand.”
“Do you plan on trying for the contract at microloft?” Mason asked Scarlet.
“What? Of course not! It’s a lost cause.”
“I don’t even know why you suggested it.”
Mason shrugged and said, “you have no reason not to go for it.”
“Oh I do. It will just give Jason and Elicia a chance to play even dirtier than they always do.” She said.
“I want no part in it.”
“I still think you should try. Try it Scarlet, you really never know.”
Scarlet gave it a thought. “What do I have to lose right?”
“Just typical Jason and Elicia. And a bit of my mom.” She laughed.
“I’m going to do it!” She said.
Scarlet had no idea that Mason had called Rita Donovan earlier to tell her to specifically hand the contract to Scarlet.
She was in for a treat!
Mason had Rita officially announce the opening of applications for the new building in two weeks time.So he used his now very free time to do something special for Scarlet.Besides offering her the contract which would grant her the position of COO, he wanted to ice her out.Although she was a Rodney, she left parent’s home shortly after her wedding to Mason because they all gave them an extremely difficult time.Because of her siding with her husband all the time, she was no longer a member of the board and she was pushed to the backboard.Scarlet didn’t complain though, the less time she spent with them, the better. She did the little she could to provide for her and Mason. Mason did odd jobs here and there to also provide the little he could. So he really wanted to do something for Scarlet so that day he sat at the computer, searching for jewelry companies in Beverly Hills. He came across a jewelry company ‘steffany’ which had a branch not too far from his home. That was his agen
Mason got home later that day after dropping by at Microloft’s HQ to tell Rita Donovan to specifically keep the building contract for Scarlet Rodney. In the living room where he and Scarlet usually talked, Scarlet said, “it’s the talk of town! This anonymous Mr Wilde!”“A three million dollar pearl necklace?! I had no idea pearls were even that expensive!”“Did they get any photos of him?” Mason asked.“None at all! Somehow he managed to evade all the cameras. No one even saw him exit the building!”“If this is how big the chairman of Microloft is, do you really think it’s a good idea to apply?”Scarlet was not feeling confident about going to Microloft’s HQ the next week. She was rather comfortable living below her means. Plus getting rejected would not do her family any good.“The Rodneys were among the many high shooters who tried for a contract with Microloft and got rejected.”“Not a very good look huh?” She asked Mason. That moment, at their front door, Vivian was knocking hyst
Scarlet left home early to see if she could take out a loan to pay off the mortgage. She knew Mason had said he would cover it but honestly she didn’t see how.She did notice that he had become more self confident but she didn’t think much off it.She saw it as a bluff. That morning however, Mason placed a call to Rita after Scarlet had left the house to pay off the house’s mortgage and pay their debt to Vivian. The total money was just over two hundred thousand dollars. Pocket change to Mason now.He could have done the transfer himself but it would show that the money came from him which would raise suspicion.Mason spent the rest of the morning looking up wedding venues. He picked up his phone and dialed Gerald.“Hi Gerald, good day.”Mason said over the phone.“Good morning Master, to what do I owe this pleasure?” Gerald asked.“I’m looking at this venue on wall street. A subsidiary of Microloft? Peka gardens I believe.”“Oh yes! A beautiful place truly!”“Do you have something pl
Mr Charlie was still kneeling down, along with the other two guards.“Please, Mr Charlie. Do not sully yourself. Stand.”Mr Charlie stood up and dusted his knees.“I’m terribly sorry sir! Please have mercy!”“That is enough,” Mason dismissed.“I’m here concerning the artificial garden. Walk with me please, this place is quite rowdy.”“Of Course sir!” Mr Charlie said as he jogged after Mason.“You mentioned the artificial garden sir.”“Yes. I’m thinking of using it as my proposal venue.”“Oh that is wonderful sir! Good news! We have never let anyone rent the space before so it would definitely be a statement!”“Perfect,” Mason thought.“One more thing, ensure no word gets out that I am Mr Wilde. Lie if you have to.”“Not a problem sir!”“That will be all.”Mason left Peka gardens and went home.At home, he found Scarlet sitting at the couch trying to write out a contract. If only she knew she didn’t have to work so hard and that the contract was already hers.“Hi,” Mason said as he app
The next week rolled over like a breeze and it was the day of Scarlet going to Microloft. She dreaded it but Mason gave her a little pep talk. She took her car and drove to Microloft’s HQ and to her surprise, Jason was waiting in the lobby also.Jason saw her and pointed, “what are you doing here little sister?”“I think for the same reason why you’re here,” she said. She scanned around for any vacant seats but all were occupied except for the one right next to Jason.“I guess everyone’s feeling lucky today.” She said and took a very reluctant seat next to Jason.“You really let loser Mason convince you?!”Scarlet didn’t respond to his question; rather , she said, “You don’t want to cause a scene, Jason. Elites from all over the country are here seeking the same thing we want.”Jason continued taunting her.Scarlet decided to ignore him, hoping he would take a hint and shut up. She didn’t want to engage him and draw any attention to herself.Jason scoffed, “ignoring me? I feel sorry
Scarlet sent out official invites to all the members of her family. As each of them received their invite they were pleasantly surprised.“You think she’s pregnant?” Jason asked his mom, Elicia.“No way!” She answered back.“Maybe they’re in debt, I heard Vivian took out their mortgage. They’re most likely swimming in debt.”“Debt but sending out fancy invitations to a fancy dinner? What is that woman up to?”When Vivian got the invite, she scoffed.“I’m not doing this! That ungrateful child threw me out of a house I paid for!”“You’re not even a little bit curious about why she did that?” Bruce, her third husband asked.“It doesn’t matter! I’m not going and you’re not going!”When Madam Rodney got the invitation, she was indifferent, “did they hit a jackpot or something? The quality of this card is impeccable.”“Or perhaps Mason stole some money, wouldn’t put it past him.” Michelle Rodney said. The dinner was for that night at a moderately fancy restaurant in Beverly Hills. What Sca
Mason blinked an unnatural amount of times before answering, “breathtaking.”Scarlet laughed heartily, throwing her head back.“Is that a good or a bad thing?” She asked mischievously, rubbing her hand down her other arm.“Definitely good.” Mason replied coolly, lips pursed, trying to hide the gleam in his eyes.Scarlet blushed, the atmosphere suddenly felt really warm.Mason felt it too, “ready?” He cleared his throat, breaking the awkward silence.“Yes, although I think a glass of champagne wouldn’t hurt. For the nerves.”Mason smiled, “for the nerves.”He poured her a glass and watched her gulp it down, she finished in a few seconds and said, “ready.”The couple drove to the venue which was a restaurant about fifteen minutes away.As Mason drove, he felt Scarlet fidgeting and without thinking, he took her hand and held it, which took her by surprise but that was exactly what she needed. She offered him a warm smile, “Thank you, Mason. Truly.”“You never have to thank me.” He replie
Elicia started laughing, “you called us here to try out stand up comedy?”“Scarlet, dear, you had us all here to waste our time?” Her mother, Vivian asked. She looked at Mason who nodded slightly at her, suddenly she had all the courage that she required to finish with this sham of a gathering. She reached for her bag, unzipped it and brought out a brown envelope.“The proof and details of the contract are in this envelope.” She said and stretched, handing the envelope to her grandmother, Madam Rodney. The table was dead silent, so much so that you could undoubtedly hear a pin drop.Though in doubt, Madam Rodney took the envelope from her, eyeing it before inspecting the seal.“It is indeed from Microloft.” She muttered to herself, still in disbelief. She removed the seal and opened the envelope to reveal the contents of it. It was but a piece of paper which read, "This is to show and certify that Microloft has independently contracted Scarlet Rodney as the contractor for the construc
