Chapter 7

Mason got home later that day after dropping by at Microloft’s HQ to tell Rita Donovan to specifically keep the building contract for Scarlet Rodney.

In the living room where he and Scarlet usually talked, Scarlet said, “it’s the talk of town! This anonymous Mr Wilde!”

“A three million dollar pearl necklace?! I had no idea pearls were even that expensive!”

“Did they get any photos of him?” Mason asked.

“None at all! Somehow he managed to evade all the cameras. No one even saw him exit the building!”

“If this is how big the chairman of Microloft is, do you really think it’s a good idea to apply?”

Scarlet was not feeling confident about going to Microloft’s HQ the next week.

She was rather comfortable living below her means. Plus getting rejected would not do her family any good.

“The Rodneys were among the many high shooters who tried for a contract with Microloft and got rejected.”

“Not a very good look huh?” She asked Mason.

That moment, at their front door, Vivian was knocking hysterically.

Scarlet rushed to open the door.

“What are you doing here mom?”

“Have you seen the news?! Oh this mysterious Mr Wilde is the talk of America!”

She squealed.

“Do you think he’s a bachelor?! No one has been able to find anything about him!”

“It’s almost as though he’s a ghost.” Scarlet said.

She wasn’t one for town gossip but only someone who literally lived under a rock will not know anything about the anonymous Mr Wilde.

“Perhaps you will see him when you to Microloft next week!” Vivian said.

“I have higher chances of actually being let into the building.” She said in response.

Vivan suddenly noticed Mason’s presence and said, “do you not even see hello to your mother in law when she comes into your home?!”

“Apologies mother but it seemed like you were too busy fawning over Mr Wilde.” Mason said back with a smirk.

Vivian clicked her teeth.

“Your husband gets on my last nerve!” Vivian yelled at Scarlet.

“But mom, he wasn’t wrong.”

“When are you going to stop siding with this good for nothing instead of your own family?!”

Vivian was especially known for her extreme drama. She was fond of blowing things out of proportion.

When neither Mason or Scarlet gave her the attention she wanted, she dried her fake tears.

“I’m here for a different reason actually.”

“Why?” Mason and Scarlet chorused.

They both wondered what she was up to this time.

“It’s concerning your application for a contract at Microloft.”

Mason was paying close attention now.

“Remember Ric? Ric Wilson.”

Scarlet did not like where this was going.

“Ric is going to put in a word for you. He has a cordial relationship with the vice chairman!”

“I’m not interested.”

“At least hear me out, you ungrateful child!”

“He just wants to have dinner with you. That’s all!”

“I’m not interested mother! In case you have forgotten, you’re literally sitting across from my husband!”

“Oh for God’s sake! What has Mason ever done for you?! Why don’t you leave him?! Ric is offering you this contract on a platter in exchange for one date!”

“I am not interested!”

“She said she wasn’t interested mother.” Mason said coldy.

He hated that he was treated like he didn’t exist even though he had been enduring it for the past five years.

He also hated that his wife had to always defend him around everyone.

A few days ago he was powerless, but that was not the case anymore.

It seemed as though Ric didn’t disclose to the Rodneys about his family’s current standing with Microloft.

Though he was annoyed, Mason decided to save his anger for when Ric was actually in front of him.

“You b*stard! How did you brainwash my daughter?!”

Vivian was getting even more hysterical.

“Alright Mom, I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

Mason said and Vivian gasped dramatically.

“How dare you throw me out of a house that I paid for!”

“I will pay you back in full. Now get out of my house this instant!”

“Scarlet! Are you going to stand there while this good for nothing throws me out of your house?! Your own mother?!”

Scarlet looked the other way.

“I never want to see you here again!”

Mason yelled.

“How dare you speak to me like that, you dog?!”

“I can have your life over in an instant!”

“Mom! Leave! Now!”

Vivian gasped, face red from embarrassment. She took her bag and left the room.

When Vivian left the silence in the room was louder than when she was around.

“We’re going to have to look for how to cover the mortgage.” Scarlet said.

“I know you were heated but maybe you shouldn’t have mentioned paying her back. Now we’re going to have to cut our cost of living tremendously. I don’t know how we’re going to survive.”

“I will take care of it. I apologize, I was heated too.”

Mason said.

“It’s fine. She deserved it. You did something I never had the courage to do.”

“She’s still your mom.”

Scarlet sighed.

“It has never felt as if I had parents. I felt more like a transitional piece for them.”

“I had hoped they would change though.”

Scarlet said, getting up.

“I’m sorry.” Mason said.

“You’re not responsible for my lack of actual parents. Goodnight Mason, I have a contract to write out.” She said, forcing a smile.

Mason hated that he couldn’t just reveal himself to Scarlet.

He wasn’t sure how she would react or handle it.

He hated that he was lying to her but right now that was the only plausible option.

Plus he had not yet broken the news to her about having a vow renewal.

Mason took a quick shower, laid on the couch and drifted off to sleep.
