A few minutes passed between the arranged couple. Archer was silent, contemplating about a good conversation starter. He was impressed with her but he didn’t seem to know much about her, apart from the fact that she was the daughter of the Lord of Keringham.
Following his experience with his ex wife and her family, he wanted to know about her family too, but the awkwardness between them stopped him from speaking. He was in fact waiting for Tangie to at least say something.“Hm hm” he cleared his throat softly. Tangie sat up, staring at him.“Uh…” she started.“I don’t know if this is too early, but…” she paused.Even though she was a confident, rich woman, and Archer was dressed in shabby clothing, something in her just felt submissive to him. He had the kind of personality that seemed to intimidate her, and more so, the fact that she was feeling something for him. She nervously began to fiddle with her fingers, smiling shyly. “But…?” Archer nudged her on, sensing her hesitation. “But, we can’t sit here forever…” she blurted out, smiling wryly, “I know you just came out of prison so you may not have a place to stay…” Oh, if she knew that he was richer than anyone she ever knew joined together, maybe she wouldn’t have said anything. Archer had a mansion waiting for him at the White Plains- a massive estate area he inherited from Master Wood. How could he not have where to stay? But Archer nodded, and smiled wryly. “So… would you like to go home with me?” Tangie asked shyly. “Let’s go home, you can meet my family, my father…” “Family” Archer sighed quietly, hoping the Sullivans were nothing like the Austins. For some reason, he felt nervous about meeting the Sullivans, Master Wood had taught him that the first impression mattered in everything. He looked around himself and he was dressed in poor clothes, he would appear in the house of the Lord, looking shabby. “You’ve already been announced as my fiancé, I don’t think you can escape it now.” Tangie explained, sensing his reluctance. His Master’s voice, “…the Sullivans are your new family!” echoed in his head and he quickly reconsidered his reluctance.“Let’s do it…” he said, after all he was divorced, he didn’t see why not. Besides, his Master’s orders were the most important thing for him now.“Are you ready?” Tangie asked. Archer smiled softly, “sure.” The ride to the Manor of the Keringham Lord was a long ride from the cafeteria where Tangie had found him, and he was surprised, remembering that she said it was her investigations that led her to him.“This is a long way from home” he finally commented. “We are almost there” Tangie replied, smiling sheepishly. Just as she finished her sentence, Archer looked up and a massive gate appeared before him. Their convoy stopped outside the gate and the gate glided open on its own.The convoy drove in and Archer was awed by the beauty of the place Tangie called home. It was not like any of the new buildings in Utah. This building had a vintage castle aura to it, it was a proper castle, manned and decorated with nature and fountains in the right places. “I hope you find the place comfortable” Tangie said. Archer nodded, concealing his nervousness.Together, they walked towards the main building and were immediately stopped by the sight of an event happening in the lobby. The Sullivan family were gathered at a long rectangle table, with a man that looked like a King sitting at the head.“That’s my grandfather up there…” Tangie whispered, “he’s the lord of Keringham.”“The old man enjoys hosting parties… I’m guessing this is one of his reunions!” Tangie teased as she spoke to Archer. She stepped into the hall where everyone could see her and her grandfather, Lord Sullivan immediately noticed the man beside her. He broke into a hearty laughter, cheering them on,“Look who we have here!” Lord Sullivan exclaimed. He didn’t care about Archer’s clothes, he only trusted Master Wood’s recommendation for him. If Master Wood had given up a good payment in exchange for this man to marry his granddaughter, then there must be something about him.“Join us!” The Lord said, “please sit down…”But not everybody shared in the Lord’s excitement. Tangie’s parents were brewing in anger at the appearance of their daughter’s supposed fiancé. They were expecting that Tangie’s fiancé would be one of the wealthiest top tier families, after all they were the Sullivans. “Why is he dressed like that?!” Tangie’s mother, Mrs Matthew Sullivan whispered to her husband, and the man gave Archer a stern stare, glaring at him in a demeaning manner.“He can’t be rich and still be in those clothes… I’m disappointed and disgusted” Tangie’s mother continued.Even though she was whispering, her voice was audible enough for the people sitting next to her. They soon began to look down on Archer, sneering secretly at him. Archer began to feel uncomfortable with their eyes on him, but he remained composed, focusing only on his Master’s words, “remain calm in all situation, that’s how you take control.”“What do you do, Young man?” Mr Matthew asked, hoping that he could save face with his profession even if he wasn’t well dressed. Archer hesitated for a while, and a strange feeling of awkwardness overcame him. Saying he just came out of prison would be a total damage to his image and that of Master Wood, so he remained quiet, thinking carefully of what to say. Tangie nudged him gently, smiling softly, even though she was nervous too because she knew the truth. “I’m unemployed for now, sir” Archer replied. Before he could finish the statement, the gathered family bursted into laughter, laughing at his words.“Unemployed?” Someone said,“He means he is jobless” another one explained. All these only made Mr and Mrs Mathew Sullivan furious and embarrassed.“Why must my Tangie marry such a man?!” Mrs Mathew blurted out angrily, her voice was quivering with disapproval.“He looks nothing like the standard for my daughter, how can I let her marry such a loser?!” The Lord Sullivan frowned at Mrs Mathew and shook his head in disapproval of her words.“Appearance isn’t everything, Margaret!” Lord Sullivan bellowed.“He may not look like the best choice for Tangie, but he is the very best. Give it time, you’ll get to understand.” Tangie smiled satisfactorily, she was grateful that her grandfather stood up for Archer. “Tangie dear” Lord Sullivan called,“Pour him a drink so we can get on with the Reunion.”Tangie did as she was told and her parents had no other option but to swallow their opinions. The Family Reunion continued, and important topics were raised at the table. Archer was surprised that a family reunion included such important business decisions, but he was impressed. He remained quiet and listened attentively to the discussion with interest. “We must make the decision to either go with Sterling Group or Brian Foundation.”“An alliance with The Sterling Group will take us to a new level, if we can collaborate with them then, we will be known internationally.” Lord Sullivan proposed,“But the Brian Foundation is also as prestigious as Sterling Group. If we go with the Brian Foundation, we will be endearing the hearts of citizens to us.” Mr Matthew Sullivan argued. “The Sterling Group would be the best choice…” Archer contributed,The table went quiet instantly, and everyone turned to him. Archer moved to explain why he had suggested The Sterling Group, but before he could say anything. The silence in the hall was broken with gossips and mockery.“What does he know?” Some people said, chuckling dryly.“He’s probably just going with Grandpa because he likes him…” Tangie’s cousin sneered. Archer kept quiet and turned to Tangie, and she gave him a pleading look, “please don’t say anything else” she whispered, “you don’t know these things…” “Ooooh?!!!” Someone at the table shouted, calling everyone’s attention to him.“What is it, Uncle Bernard?” Tangie asked, Bernard turned the phone screen for everyone to see before saying, “Sterling Group is launching a CURE for ASTHMA!”“It’s impossible!” Mr Matthew exclaimed, “there’s no cure to asthma.” He added sadly. He wasn’t an asthma patient, but his daughter had suffered severe asthma since toddler and he had gone everywhere in search of a cure, or at least to find a some help to make his daughter better but there was none. Not even all his money could help his daughter, and she had to live with an inhaler in her purse every day.“They better not mislead the public and give them false hope, all because they want to sell” Mr Mathew scoffed, thinking about the number of asthma patients that would willingly buy the new medicine despite its cost.“But if the Sterling Group has indeed found the cure to Asthma, they would sure need distributors…” Lord Sullivan said,“We should step up and seize the opportunity…”“There’s little or no opportunity here, Grandpa” Tangie’s oldest cousin, Victor objected.“I believe Uncle Mathew is right. There can’t be any medicine that can cure asthma. Take Tangie for example, we spen
"I don't believe anything you say" Beatrice rolled her eyes,"And why not?" Tangie returned. She was tired of her incessantly belittling Archer. Although she did not entirely believe that Archer who just came out of prison could be the CEO of Sterling Corporation, but something in him commanded her trust and she went with her instincts."Why can't you believe him? Is it always about the way a man is dressed? He might look scruffy but he deserves to be heard.""He doesn't even deserve to speak at our table and you're talking about hearing him out?" Beatrice fired. At Beatrice's words, Mrs Margaret nodded, showing her approval."That's enough you two!" Lord Sullivan bellowed. "I will not have you insult a man before me. It is like Tangie said, a man is not always how he is dressed. He may not be anything at Sterling but he is our son-in-law-to-be." He continued, "And for that, he deserves respect." "Son-in-law?" Chorused the table, each person squirming in their seat, looking around
His ex-brother-in-law's laughter filled the air, churning and stirring anger from within Archer.Without second thoughts, he barged into the living room and found not just Oliver, but his mother too sitting comfortably on the couch."What are you doing here?!" Archer thundered, Oliver and his mother jumped in surprise. They weren't aware of another person in the house until Archer's angry voice demanded an explanation."I said what are you doing here?!" Archer repeated, his angry voice reverberating through the house.Oliver and his mother recoiled instantly, sensing Archer's overpouring anger. But she quickly composed herself."What do you mean what are we doing here?" She retorted, "Who are you, by the way, and what are you doing here too?"Archer's anger simmered inside him, but he fought hard to control his temper. He didn't have the strength for their usual banter. He looked around the house, searching for a more reasonable person."Where is Eva?!" He bellowed."I thought as muc
"I'm sorry you had to see that," Archer said in a low tone as they walked out of the house, still holding hands with Tangie. He felt sorry that their first day together was full of so many events. He could not even bear to glance at her for fear of seeing her disappointment.Instead, his mind swirled with thoughts of where he could take her to. He had promised to spend the month before their wedding together, but it seemed like all his efforts were fruitless."It's fine..." Tangie replied softly, "but it feels like your ex still loves you." Archer paused in his tracks instantly and pivoted towards her, "don't believe anything you saw today. Don't believe anything you heard either." He said seriously."I didn't hear anything, I just got the message from her body language when I introduced myself as your fiancée."Archer furrowed his eyebrows, glaring at her like she was touching a sensitive part of him."I'm sorry," she apologized, sensing that he did not want her to continue talking
Gunshot. Then another gunshot. Two men fell to the ground, their faces were unfamiliar, but they had their hands pointing in one direction.Archer turned in that direction and noticed men in black, charging toward the fallen men. He shifted backward and took a stance of defense. The incoming men had one thing in common, they all had a strange tattoo on the dorsal part of their wrist. He glanced at the men on the ground and observed they had the same tattoo.Theirs was clearer. It was a tattoo of a descending eagle. His phone blared to life, raging loudly.Archer shot his eyes open, he looked around his surroundings and realized it was just a dream. A dream that felt so real.He glanced at his wrist as if to be certain that the tattoo didn't appear on his wrist overnight. One thing however was alarming. That tattoo felt weirdly familiar. He grabbed his phone from the lampstand next to him and switched off the blaring alarm. He searched the internet for answers, “What company uses the
The dimly lit area of Archer’s executive suite in the boardroom added to the authority that he had on the meeting. From where he was seated the long mahogany table sprawled into the distance presenting fifteen stakeholders on each side of the table, each person straining to get a full glimpse of the new President.Archer’s presence at the head on the table was imposing, his steely gaze traveled around the room landing from face to face asserting his dominance over each person. The scent of expensive colognes mingled with the stifling air of uncertainty.Archer had questions, the Stakeholders had questions. It was obvious in the way they mumbled to each other.Archer’s main concern was the man with the tattoo. He glared at him at the other end of the table. As if he was aware that Archer knew something other people didn't, he squirmed in his seat, avoiding his intimidating gaze. The dream he had this morning flashed through his memory leaving him wondering what side the tattooed man
Pacing around the patio, Tangie’s eyes fleeted repeatedly across her phone’s screen. She was waiting for him, waiting because he had told her to. It was almost midnight and Archer was yet to be back from work, ignoring her calls, stirring a gnawing worry in her.She slumped on the lawn couch fighting off the sense of devastation and panic that had enveloped her.She had meticulously prepared dinner. She had prepared lunch too thinking he’d be back then.Unexpectedly, her phone shattered the gloomy mood with a soft ring, she jumped, startled by the unexpected noise.Glancing at her phone, she realized it was her father. She wondered what could be so urgent that couldn’t wait till morning. Without hesitation, she answered the call.“Tangie, dear. Can I speak to Archer? I need to ask him something.”“What is it, dad? Is it about work?” Tangie asked, curiosity dripping in her tone.“Yes, it's about Sterling Group…”Before Tangie could mention Archer’s absence, she was stopped by the sou
Tangie’s heart raced as she met his cold glare. "I am so sorry..." she quivered, her voice barely audible. I just thought I could do something nice..." She explained, shrinking in size as she did so."All you have to do is stay in your room and avoid me as much as you can."We are to be married in a month. Let's at least have a meal together.""Well, food is not my problem. I can't find the time to eat with you.""Am I asking for too much? You brought me here, what was your plan? I made mine clear to you. I want to know the man I am marrying and you agreed.""We haven't sat together for five minutes in forty-eight hours. I don't even know your middle name, you're so mysterious that I find myself looking around to be sure I'm not being watched."Archer’s stern voice softened, replaced with curiosity, his eyes narrowing at once,"Do you feel like you've been followed recently? Did you go anywhere?""I… I stopped by the office for some documents, then to get groceries, to the car wash.”
