Chapter 7 || Sick Test

The driver pulled up in front of the Lord's grandeur mansion, but strangely this time there was a line of knights standing outside the car, waiting for Alex despite the sudden outburst of rain.

All clothed in customized black suits that were now mildly wet, the knights exuded sheer bravery and loyalty. As Alex stepped out of the car, all the knights synchronously bowed and saluted him, yelling, “Welcome back, boss Lord!” at the top of their equally baritone voices.

Witnessing this, Alex smugly grinned at the respect they showed him and made his way inside to see Kate and a rather familiar towering bald Italian man across the gigantic sitting room.

Kate and the bald man turned towards him after a servant announced his arrival. With an impressed smirk on her face, she locked eyes with him, and he closed some distance between them.

The Italian man, however, turned towards him with a stern expression on his face. He was almost as scary and cold-looking as the dragon tattoos he had all over his arms.

The man intensively beheld Alex as he stood before them, and before he or Kate could say anything to each other, he sneered flatly. “Is this the new heir? He doesn't look like he can do much of anything. What is he wearing? Did he walk out of the mansion looking like that?” With subtle disgust laced in his voice, he diminished Alex.

Kate rolled her eyes at his comments and focused on Alex. “You came back. That was faster than I thought,” she said, then moved her eyes around his body as if looking for something.

“Is something wrong? Who is this man? I didn't see him in the house when I woke,” Alex asked, locking gaze with the man. While they stared at each other contemptuously, he tried recalling where he had seen his face, but the memories were tattered in his mind.

“Oh, allow me to introduce you. This is Sugar; he was your dad's right-hand man… well, before he passed. Apart from me, he was the only person close to your dad that had the family's interest at heart. Respect him, and he will respect you,” Kate stated and ushered Alex to him. The two men first stared each other down, but eventually shook hands.

“Nice to meet you, sir. I hope to learn more about my father, the family, and the knights from you,” Alex humbly said while still shaking his hand furiously. He snatched his hand away because of the cramp he was now feeling from the handshake, and pocketed it.

“First, you don't call me sir. Only you are to be called that. Second, stand up straight, your chest out and bring your head up. You are a Lord; don't stand like a common man from the streets!” Sugar yelled, and he immediately complied. Although he felt a little offended by his statement, he quickly shrugged it off.

He was a common man before, but that person died, and he wasn't anymore. So he shouldn't be offended by words like that or act like that.

“And another thing. Why are you wearing that? Did you get harassed by reporters, and so you changed into that disguise to get away from them?” Sugar curiously asked. His question was the best verdict he could give after analyzing Alex's choice of wear on first seeing him.

“No… actually…” Alex's explanation was cut short by Kate's unusual high-pitched voice. “Well… we haven't announced his arrival as a Lord to the world yet. We will after he passes the test.”

The moment Kate said those words, Sugar's eyes darkened. He had the expression of someone who just saw a ghost, but quickly changed his fright-filled expression to another before Alex asked questions.

“Well, we have seen the DNA papers. He is the legitimate son of his father. So he must surely embark on the test. Do you have candidates to test him with? When is it going to be?” Sugar asked and was startled by Kate's answer.

“What do you mean now? Don't you know his history with these men? Do you think he has the willpower to not do it?” Sugar asked fiercely, but Kate shunned him. She spun around to face Alex, who from his facial expression, you could tell he had many questions but thankfully didn't look scared.

“Are you ready?” She asked, and his forehead creased confused. “Ready for what?” Alex asked warily.

“The test. Before becoming a Lord, you must pass a test that's supposed to evaluate your willpower. This test will prove if you have the guts to do the right thing when needed,” Kate explained, but Alex still had an caution expression.

The look on Sugar's face when he heard about the test had given the impression that it was going to be hard. And the last thing Alex wanted now was to disappoint anybody, fail to become a Lord or fail to exact vengeance on his past oppressors.

“I'm ready. Let's do the test,” Alex confidently said, and Kate grinned lightly. Sugar, on the other hand, shook his head slightly and proceeded to leave.

“Tell me how the test goes. I'm out. Our spies have some info on the foreigners funding Del Rosario's human trafficking operators. I'll check them out and report later to you,” he said, his eyes moving from Kate and resting on Alex. “Welcome back, Boss. You indeed look like your father. Your parents will be at peace wherever they are right now. I hope you'll lead the knights properly to eliminate their enemies.” He added, bowed and strode out the door.

“Let's go!” Wasting no time, Kate walked out of the mansion, and Alex followed behind. They walked far from the Lord's compound and into a slightly lit tunnel that led into a corridor. At the end, there was a door that led into a dark room.

Alex entered the ominous room and wondered why he was here. Kate inside the darkness asked him if he was ready, and he immediately said yes. She ordered for the lights to be turned on, and Alex was met with the sight of two seriously beaten men, tied in chairs.

“Please, please, no more. I've already told you what I know. Please don't hurt me anymore,” one of the men begged through broken teeth, and from his husky voice, appearance, and serpent tattoo, Alex immediately recognized him. He was Darren's henchman, and he and his other half-dead companion were the ones that finished him up that night.

Alex paused as he took in the state of these men. He felt content that they were in such a tortured state but, at the same time, felt sorry for them. All this moral dilemma, however, was crushed by questions on why they were in the place he was supposed to carry out his test.

“What are they doing here? Did you torture them because of me?” Alex asked Kate, who wore a sinister smirk on her face. She turned, brought out a black revolver she held in her belt, and handed it over to him.

“Kill them,” she ordered callously, and Alex stiffen, giving her a skeptical look. He thought his ears heard wrong as he observed the gun in his hand, the men who were now staring at him with bloody eyes, and then Kate looking disappointed he hadn't shot yet.

“No, I'm not killing anybody,” Alex said with resolve. Kate shook her head disappointed as she closed some space between them.

“They killed you. Do you know how we caught them? We caught them trying to finish your adopted mother in the hospital. That's how cruel the Del Rosarios are. You mess with them, they wipe out your entire family. So, killing these men will bring honor to yourself and will make your rivals scared of you. Now…” Aiming the gun properly for him, Kate yelled for him to pull the trigger.

Alex was flabbergasted by Kate's sudden change in persona. The nice lady who had his interest at heart was now forcing him to kill people, just for what? So he could be feared? Be a Lord? What should he do?

“Please, don't kill us. I beg of you. Please! we are sorry!” The two men begged for their lives as Alex shakily pointed the gun at them. He couldn't bring himself to pull the trigger.

“Do it, so you can become a true Lord. Do it so you can make your ancestors proud!” Kate yelled in his ear.

Alex's face turned livid as blood drained from it. His stomach lurched, as he shakily cocked the gun, and balance it's tip directly at the men.

“Please! Please!” The men pleaded while shaking helplessly in their chairs. Alex suddenly felt nauseated, and so he bent over and threw up on the ground. But Kate ignoring all of that, continued pressuring him to kill the men.

Him, having enough, couldn't take the pressure anymore. He pulled the trigger and the sound of the gun echoed round the room.

The men closed their eyes, thinking they were shot.

Luckily, they weren't, as Alex had shot the roof of the room instead of them.

He dropped the gun with a heavy thud and scowled at Kate. “I want revenge—really bad, but I'm not going to take someone's life just because of it. They might be murderers, but I'm not,” Alex stated furiously, preparing to leave. But Kate stopped him. She put her hand in her jeans pocket and brought out a badge similar to that of his pendant.

“The test was about having the willpower not to kill a person. We are the Lords. We protect and save. Your father gave me this test, and he had this test too. Thankfully, you passed yours, so welcome, Alexander. It's time for all of Labyrinth City to know who you are,” Kate exclaimed excitedly.
