Despite now officially being a Lord, Alex was far from happy; the scowl etched on his face while staring at Kate made it clear. He couldn't believe that she had almost set him up for murder and was bewildered by the sheer nonchalance now lingering in her expression after what had just happened.
At no point in his life had he been required to exercise more restraint than just now, and this was including the fact that he had shared a brutal history with the people he wasn't supposed to kill. What if he actually pulled the trigger? Alex contemplated, while his smoldering gazed fixates on Kate. She, on the other hand, stood rigid, wondering why Alex hadn't taken the Lord's badge from her or, at the very least, shown any sign of elation as he had passed the test. She dropped her arms and closed some distance, unswayed by the unwelcoming demeanor, he had on.Now a breath's length from him, her eyes caught his hands, which were twitching furiously. She held them in an effort to calm him and curb the fear he was trying so hard to hide, but was already slipping out. Subsequently, she proceeded to rest herself tenderly onto his chest, placing her ear to listen to his erratic heartbeats. Soon, both of their breaths synchronized, and she glanced up at him, finally meeting his now timid gaze. She started harshly, “Why do you let the fright from your enemies' death consume you? See how uneasy you look just because you almost shot them. You should relax and breathe; never give your foes or allies the chance to perceive fear in you on both sides. Lesson one.”Done talking, she pulled from him, but Alex abruptly held her back. While she halts on her track, Alex bore his eyes into her face, trying to find just a single expression that conveyed remorse for what she had just made him gone though. He found none, so he personally reprimanded her.“What if I had been persuaded to kill them? Would you still have considered yourselves the good guys? Those murderers would have been denied the justice they deserved just because you people think it's okay to test a man's restraint with another person's life!” Alex bellowed, but Kate wasn't chastised. However, she was fascinated by his outburst of anger, and welcomed it.“I want to ask you something important, and you honestly must tell me the truth,” Alex huffed, and Kate's brow furrowed. “If worst comes to it, do you people kill the bad guys just to get back at them for what they did?” Alex inquired earnestly. And although Kate regarded the question asked, to random and disrespectful, she held a tormented expression on her face before swiftly concealing it with her usual nonchalant look.“How dare you,” Yanking his hand away from her arm, she picked her gun, and securely put it behind her. “How could you mistake us for those bloodthirsty Del Rosarios. If we were as spiteful and evil as them, don't you think by now all of them would have been six feet under the earth? The place where all who have suffered their wrath—” She broke off, a quiet sob, escaping her lips.Quickly, she darted her eyes away, not wanting to be seen as weak.Covertly cleaning off the droplet of tear that threatened to fall, she prepared to leave, but then Alex pinned her to the ground with a statement. “Promise me you won't make me go through something like that, and you won't ever do something like that. Otherwise, I am not becoming a Lord.”His last words made Kate stiffened, and a spasm of annoyance spike though her. How could he say those words? Does he know how many people wishes to be a Lord's heir? Could he comprehend the pain his deceased parents went through because of him? Kate pondered indignantly. She clenched the badge she was to give him, and spun around with a gritted teeth. “Are you really going to deny your destiny? Deny your parents and all who have been hurt by those bastards justice, just for what?” She asked fuming, unbeknownst to Alex, grasping into the badge so hard, it starting to pierce into her palm.Alex mirrored her once nonchalant expression. “I'm not denying anything; I just want you to make a promise.” He stated firmly and waited for the words from Kate, whose jaw had tightened. “It's just a promise; why is it so hard for...” She trailed him off by gesturing her hand.Averting Alex's statements completely, she remarked. “Being a Lord is equally as important as being the monarch of Great Britain itself. Refusing what billions of people could only dream of being is stupid and reckless. But since you're ready to throw away your family's lineage, for whatnot, I'm guessing you might—” Alex slyly cut her words short before she could have one over him.“Not what? Be competent enough to be a Lord? Observe, I did pass your sick test. Our allies know I'm the biological son of my father, and I have been recognized as a Lord by the knights.” Alex heaved a deep breathe, and then continue, “Besides, you need me. You need me out in the lights and in the warfront because you know that's how the battle between the Del Rosarios would be won.”He added, and Kate fell silent—mildly dumbfounded. Soon, an impressed chuckle escaped her lips, followed later by a full-blown laughter that reverberated around the room. Both Alex and the beaten-up men stared at her blankly, astonished by the sound of her laughter whilst wondering why she was suddenly laughing.Deep down in his guts, however, Alex could tell she laughed at him, not out of mockery, but something totally different. He didn't know what but was going to find out.“Woah! Every time you are pushed to the very edge, you reveal a side of you that has never been seen before; it's incredible.” Smiling, she stated. “Who knew you were this good with words? If I weren't me, I would have probably been swayed, scared even. You are definitely your father's child. Catch!” Tossing the pendant to him, he caught it with no effort.“I promise,“ speaking for everybody now, she added. “We all do. No knight or Lord is going to take a person's life on my or your watch, Boss Lord” Crossing her heart with two fingers placed together, she promised. And Alex smiled inwardly knowing that despite the unexpected test, he had gotten something important today: respect, approval, and guarantee from the person at the top of the Lords family's hierarchy. He was all set now, but first.Shifting his gaze to the whimpering men, he inquired. “What is going to happen to this two? They have seen us and heard our conversations. How would you get rid of them?”Slightly recalling the tragic accident he suffered in the hands of the man, and then remembering how they almost finished off his adopted mother, he balled his hands into a fist, inorder to stifled his seething rage.“They would be thrown into the deepest darkest jail cell in the world: Melrose, a island prison in the coast of Germany. Rest assured, even if they die there ghost wouldn't be able to escape and the Del Rosario's wouldn't be able to contact or break them out.“ Kate guaranteed, and listening to her words the men vibrate furiously in there chairs, pleading for mercy.Alex couldn't hold it in, he strode quietly to where they were, each of his footstep creating an ominous tone.Getting to them, he surprisingly punched one of men, and he falls sideways to the ground with letting out a painful gasp. The other whose eyes where now widened in apprehension, received a painful kick to the chest, that hurled him into a wall, and consequently the ground.Alex rolled his hair back, arranging the messy mane with his fingers. “That is for trying to hurt my mother, you assholes!” He mouthed menacingly, then glance at Kate who held a flabbergasted expression. “What? is not like I'm killing them. They deserved those hits and more.” He huffed.A grin crept on her face. “Just as I said: Something new is revealed anytime you are pushed to the edge...”A knight footstep suddenly resonated in the room, and they both turned towards him. He carried a tablet and handed it over to Kate. She held it firmly, and turn to Alex. “It's time! Time for you to be announced to the world.” With absolutely no expression, she revealed to him.Alex instinctively took a stance upon hearing; finally, the moment was about to unfold. The world was on the verge of getting to know him, and after they did, from that point onward, nothing would be the same.Turning back would be impossible, and frankly, he was fine with that.Just from the unpleasant test he had successfully undergone, he already recognized that, after the release of his identity to the world, his newfound life wouldn't be a walk in the park. There would be glamorous celebrations, meetings, handshakes, threats on his life, fights, a pursuit of power, and undoubtedly, a bloody quest for true justice. Yet, knowing all these things, he was prepared to take the first initiative. From where he stood, he signaled for her to proceed. Nodding firmly in affirmation, Kate pressed a button on her tablet. Consequently, she received a phone call and mouthed, “Release it!” to the person on the other end of the line. A sharp female voice assented to her demand, and a few keyboard
When the commercials began airing, Kate turned to Alex with her default nonchalant expression. “So, what do you think? Everyone in the world now knows of your existence and would be eager to meet you tomorrow. How do you feel?” she asked, perceiving his now motionless state.Little did she know that Alexander's rigid presence was due to his newfound anxiety about mundane things—like what he would say at the party, how he would address the large gathering of people, and, most importantly, whether he could maintain the trillionaire facade and prevent someone from his past from recognizing him as Phil.Alex's mind dwelled on these thoughts for an endless moment, but a tap on his arm from Kate snapped him out of his worried reverie. Now scrutinizing his face intently, she tried to decipher whether the expression he wore conveyed fear, worry, or anxiety. Noticing her probing, Alex shrugged and composed himself.“It's amazing, and I feel great. Finally, everybody in the world will get to mee
In the garage, the knights selected the simplest car available for transport — a Range Rover — to discreetly move Alex across the city without attracting attention. In the vehicle, Alex sat securely, still reeling from what he had witnessed. How could they? How dare those people? After the gruesome things they did to him, they still had the audacity to want to name his child after the man who destroyed his parents. He wasn't going to let them get away with this; he was determined to make them pay: physically, emotionally, and, most importantly, financially. On the road, Alex indignation deepened as images of Darren smirking while holding Eve's baby bump invaded his thoughts. It seemed as though Darren was mocking him in the pictures, reveling in the fact that he had control over his child. It angered him, and losing his grip on his rage, he lashed out, hitting his clenched fist on his lap.The two knights heard the thud sound his fist resonated, and inquired if everything was okay wit
His mind mulled on the prospect of him about to get kidnapped, for real this time. He wasn't too afraid though as he was certain he could put up a good fight amongst whoever was unlucky enough to face him. He braced himself for the kidnap attempt, but waiting anxiously, not one person stormed out of the van, and match towards them. They were not the one getting jumped. Abruptly, a loud girlish screech filled the air, followed by the voices of men. From the continuous screams of the woman, desperate yelps for help, and the men vocally attempting to silence her, it became evident that she was in trouble. And Alex prepared to intervene, but was impeded by the knights, who locked the passenger doors.“What is this?! Unlock the doors and let's go and save her?” He yelled anxiously. They ignored him, and drew out their respective pistols, readying to protect him with it if the need be. “I am speaking to you people! Open the doors and let's go and save that woman before it's too late!”
Hearing grunts from his Knights engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the kidnappers — probably because they had used the last of their rounds — Alex rushed to assist them. Taking out one with a blow to the liver, he proceeded to the other, crippling him with a headlock. The remaining one, realizing he was outnumbered, surrendered, raising his hands shakily. But Knights looked at Alex, and nodded in agreement. Sooner, he both punched the man, sending him slumping to the ground unconscious.“Are you hurt Mister Lord?” The knights inquired of his wellbeing. He raised his hands smugly, signifying he took out the men to protect them, and could only do that if he was perfectly fine. He Knights understood his gesture, and bowed a response. “What should we do with them?” The younger amongst them asked, and Alex parted his lips to respond, but then it struck him that the lady they were about to kidnapped was still on the cold ground. He raised to where she was, his Knights behind him. Getting
Alex approached the attendant counter and wore a friendly smile. He parted his lips to speak, and as he did, he noticed the grimace that crept on the lady's face. “Good day. Okay, so I would like to acquire something. But that thing might not be available here, so if you don't mind. Could you call out your manager, so I can speak to her. She definitely knows what I'm looking for.” All the time Alex spoke, the attendant not once looked at his direction. She didn't even attempt to fulfill his requests, and just stood behind her desk, eyes glued her phone's screen. Later, she increased the phone's volume to drown out Alex's voice, after he tried repeating his request. For minutes, Alex spoke to her and she shunned him as if he wasn't a customer. Infuriated by her actions, the unknown heir proceeded to bellowed his words at her, and although it shook her slightly, she still didn't honor him as a customer.Instead, she dropped down her phone, distastefully beheld him, and sneered. “Didn't
He was also part of the group that had hurled food at him, calling him a dog during the party. Even back in the past, he used to verbally insult him anytime they crossed path. Seems he came to buy something with his girlfriend.“Don't worry father. I wouldn't disappoint you. When I attend the Lord's party tomorrow, I would make sure to present myself humbly before the new Lord. I understand that for our family to be at float and one of the top families in Labyrinth, we must be well acquainted with the Lords. Don't worry, trust me on this.” Done talking, the man pocketed his phone, and trailed his hands in his hair. “Damnit! Since the announcement of that f*cking Lord today, every single person I know have been blabbing there mouth about him, talking about how he was the real deal, and partnering with him was going to guarantee a trillion dollar reward.“Shooting a shocked look at his girlfriend who had her eyes on the female collection of clothes displayed on the manicures, he added.
The attendant staggered backward, shocked to her core, while the man and his girlfriend stood frozen behind Alex, barely able to process what had just unfolded before their eyes. Meanwhile, the unknown heir, smugly surveyed their faces and guffawed at their astonishment.“Package the items,” Alex ordered authoritatively. The attendant hurriedly nodded, then packaged the clothes and jewelry. In less than a second, she had arranged the items into the shop's customized takeout bag. Consequently, she handed it over to him with a forced smile, and Alex took it from her, passing it to the man's girlfriend. “I believe this is yours, beautiful,” he mouthed, and the girl slowly took it from him, awestruck.Turning to her boyfriend, whose face had morphed from shock into barely-concealed rage, Alex parted his lips to speak, but the man spoke first—or more like yelled first. “It's a setup! I don't believe this. You... you damn lowlife can't possibly spend three million dollars on clothes just fo
