CHAPTER 8

“Fuck!” Selena cried for like the hundredth time in the last hour. “How could I be so dumb.”

“Don’t worry, babe,” Steve said trying to comfort her. “We would surely get back at him.”

“Get your filthy hands off me!” Selena cried and pushed Steve away. “It’s all your fault. You’re the reason I’m in this mess.”

Steve stared at her, a shocked expression on his face. “My fault? How is all this my fault?”

Selena ignored him and kept sobbing. Taron McCarthy! The bastard must have been testing her. He knew he was going to inherit all of Pablo’s wealth after all and he wanted to see if she would love him for who he was, but she had failed his test. The thought of someone else getting to spend that money with Taron irked her. It was meant to be hers! She was the one that he loved!

“Babe?”

Selena looked up at Steve who was still staring at her, surprised and suddenly, she was overwhelmed by a new feeling of anger.

She rose to her feet. “Leave my house at once.”

“Oh so you’re kicking me out now?”

“I said leave!” Selena cried. “I don’t want to see you here ever again.”

Steve stood up angrily and turned around to leave. “Don’t you call me back, Selena. You hear me!”

“I won’t!” Selena cried. “Now get out.”

Selena watched as he turned around and made his way out and once he was gone, she fell back on her sofa and continued sobbing.

Everything she had ever worked for in life, she had lost in less than a week. After the meeting with Taron that ended badly, James had held an emergency meeting with the staff of Garrick Modeling Agency and in the meeting, he explained his displeasure and regret for the unavoidable circumstances they were going to be passing through. The first thing he did was laying off the staff. In one day, more than one hundred and fifty people lost their jobs. The next thing he did was cutting down their wages. Those that had been lucky to remain in the company were forced to take pay cuts of up to 50 percent and no matter how they grumbled, James Garrick didn’t care. His mind was made up, accept a pay cut or quit the job.

Selena herself was not left out. She was shocked when James presented her the paper, requesting her signature and when she stared at it, she saw that it was for a reduction in her wages by sixty percent.

“Is this some sort of joke?” Selena had asked upon seeing the paper.

James had turned around almost immediately and beckoned to one of the models waking by.

“You’ll be on the cover for New Orleans weekly digest,” he said. “Selena has quit her job.”

“Are you kidding me?” Selena cried. She dragged the paper from his hand and signed it immediately.

James turned to the model. “Problem solved. You can now go.”

That was how Selena Goldbridge had lost it all. She wondered how she was going to survive with her new wages. A Hundred and forty thousand monthly was barely enough for her to keep up with her extravagant lifestyle but now it had been cut.

A thought flashed across her mind and she pondered on it. She could try to fix a date with Taron and explain things better to him. With little tears and some more love confessions, some magic could be done. He still loved her and she was sure of it. He was just pained that she had rejected him and that was the best way he could react, that was his own form of vengeance. Selena was certain that he would get over it. As she went over her plan, she heard her phone ringing on the table and she stood up angrily to get it, thinking it was Steve calling her.

Picking the phone up, she found out that it was her best friend since high school, Sarah.

Sarah was also a model like her but had been out of contract for a long time. Selena picked the call at once.

“Oh my God Selena, you won’t believe who I just saw in the papers!” Sarah giggled in excitement.

From the excitement in her voice, Selena could guess that it was something important and she momentarily forgot about Taron .

“Who did you see?” Selena asked sitting up and mopping the tears around her eyes.

“Your freaking boyfrienddddd!” Sarah screamed. “He’s been testing you all along. Taron is soooo rich now. You made it, Selena. We made it.”

Selena did not reply. She dropped her phone on the couch and slumped to the ground, defeated. Her best friend had just called to remind her of her problem.

“You’re not saying anything?” Sarah frowned. “I just told you that Taron is now rich.”

“I broke up with him some days ago,” Selena muttered.

“You did what?”

“I said I broke up with him some days ago!” Selena cried.

“Oh come on!” Sarah groaned. “You’re cursed, Selena.”

“He was going to ask me to marry him,” Selena cried. “I couldn’t let that happen. I couldn’t even imagine myself spending the rest of my life with him.”

“Well you can now can’t you?” Sarah frowned.

“Of course I can,” Selena muttered. “He’s a multi billionaire now.”

“Good,” Sarah said. “Now go correct your mistake.”

She hung up the call immediately and Selena stood up from the sofa. She had to act and she had to act fast if she wanted to stand a chance.

Selena cleaned her eyes and washed her face. She knew what she had to do. She walked to her room and searched her wardrobe for her best gown.

All she needed was a date with Taron McCarthy. He still had feelings for her and she was confident that she could make him profess them again.

Selena found a white laced gown and she raised it up, assessing it. It was beautiful, and designed in a way that would accentuate her curves. No man could resist that. Definitely not Taron McCarthy.

Selena took her phone quickly and dialed his number. He picked at the first ring.
