The fissure widened, spewing tendrils of shadow and blinding light into the chamber. The figure that emerged was enormous, its form humanoid but otherworldly, wreathed in swirling darkness that seemed to devour the very air around it. Two fiery eyes locked onto Ryker, radiating malice and raw power.

"Stand back!" Ryker barked, positioning himself between the creature and the others.

Aria yanked her sword free, stepping to his side despite his warning. "You think I’m going to let you take this thing on alone?"

Thorgrim limped forward, his axe resting on his shoulder. "Whatever it is, it bleeds, right? Let’s find out."

Elara shook her head, frantically reloading her crossbow. "This isn’t like the last one. Look at it, it’s thinking. It knows we’re here. This thing is leagues above that shadow spawn."

"Alert," the System announced, its tone urgent. "Apex Entity capabilities exceed current team combat potential. Probability of survival: 12%."

"Not helpful!" Ryker snapped, glancing around

We’re not dying here!" Ryker shouted, grabbing Elara’s arm to pull her away from a crumbling edge.Thorgrim stumbled, his axe still in hand, and gritted his teeth. "Bloody thing just won’t give up! What in the hell is down there?"Elara, shaken but functional, pointed at the glyph fragments scattered around them. "The rift isn’t closing,it’s evolving! The energy we released wasn’t enough to seal it."Ryker’s System chimed in: "Observation: Energy influx is reversing. An unknown anomaly likely generating a stabilizing force within the rift."Ryker swore under his breath. "Translation: It’s fixing itself and probably getting worse."Thorgrim swung his axe onto his back with a groan. "Great. And

The serpentine form loomed above them, its body pulsating with shadowy energy that seemed to swallow the light in the chamber. Its ember-like eyes burned with an intensity that made even Thorgrim falter.Ryker’s grip on his sword tightened. His mind raced as his system provided cold, clinical data."Entity classification: Apex Primordial. Estimated power: immeasurable. Recommended action: retreat.""Yeah, that’s not happening," Ryker muttered under his breath. He looked to the others. "Elara, any bright ideas?"Elara frantically studied the pulsating glyphs on the walls, her face pale. "If we can rebind it, force it back into whatever plane it came from,""It’ll take too long," Aria interrupted, her sword still drawn. "We don’t have the luxury of time.""Then we make time!" Ryker snapped, stepping forward to meet the creature’s gaze. "Thorgrim, Aria, keep it busy. Elara, do whatever you need to do."Thorgrim hefted his axe, blood still dripping from his wounds. • The Unlikely Heir    Chapter 23 : echoes in the dark

The silence was deafening. For the first time since they had descended into the abyss, the world seemed still, yet an uneasy tension lingered in the air, like the calm before a storm. The fissure was sealed, the serpent banished, or so they hoped, but no one dared to let their guard down.Ryker finally broke the silence. "Is everyone in one piece?"Thorgrim groaned, leaning on his axe like a crutch. "Define ‘one piece.’ Because I think I left a rib or two back in that pit."Aria sheathed her sword with a sharp metallic click, her gaze scanning the landscape. "I’m alive, for now. Elara?"Elara nodded weakly from where she knelt on the ground, still catching her breath. "I’m fine… just exhausted. I didn’t think we’d make it out.""You and me both," Ryker muttered, lowering himself to sit on a nearby boulder. The weight of the battle, the fissure, and the entity they had faced settled heavily on his shoulders. He glanced at the glowing interface of the System, its cold blue light flicker

The group trudged through the desolate terrain, every step heavy with exhaustion yet laced with determination. The distant horizon seemed darker, and the faint hum of energy from the new anomaly vibrated through the air like a low growl. Each of them carried their injuries like badges of survival, but the silence between them felt like another weight to bear.Thorgrim broke the quiet first, his voice gruff. "So, does anyone want to tell me why we’re running toward the next disaster instead of, I don’t know, sleeping for a year?"Aria glanced over her shoulder, her expression sharp. "Because the disaster won’t wait for us to recover. You know that.""Yeah, yeah," Thorgrim grumbled. "But it wouldn’t kill the world to give us a breather, would it?"Elara shot him a faint smile, though her voice was tinged with weariness. "It would, actually. That’s kind of the point."Ryker stood silent at the front of the group, his sword sheathed but his hand resting on the hilt. The glow from his syst

His heart pounded, not just from fear but from the crushing realization of the stakes."Everyone, fall into formation!" he barked, his voice cutting through the paralyzing silence.Aria stepped up beside him, her blade drawn and her green eyes ablaze. "Formation? Against that? Are you out of your mind?"Thorgrim hefted his axe, his usual bravado replaced by a grim determination. "If he’s lost his mind, I’m right there with him. Not like we have a choice."Elara knelt on one knee, clutching a glyphstone she had retrieved from her satchel. Her hands trembled as she tried to stabilize the energy still rippling through the ground. "This isn’t just a c

The laugh echoed through the void, sharp and dissonant, reverberating against the broken walls of the chamber. It wasn’t loud, but it carried a chilling weight, an undeniable malice that made the hairs on the back of their necks rise.Aria’s grip on Ryker’s arm tightened. "Tell me that was just an echo of the Primordial," she whispered, though her tone suggested she knew better.Thorgrim scanned the darkness with narrowed eyes, his axe ready. "If it was, it’s got a sick sense of humor for something that has just been banished."Elara stepped forward cautiously, her gaze fixed on the fissure where the Apex Primordial had vanished. The faint glow of the runes was gone, leaving only an eerie, unnatural silence. "No," she said softly. "That wasn’t it. That laugh… it came from somewhere deeper."Ryker pushed himself to his feet, his exhaustion temporarily forgotten. He gripped his sword, though its once-brilliant glow had faded to a dim ember. His voice was low, tense. "System. Talk to me.

The stark whiteness around Ryker rippled like a disturbed reflection on water. He stared at the figure before him, a mix of disbelief and dread churning in his chest. His brother, Daniel, stood there, or at least, what looked like him. The glow in Daniel's eyes wasn’t human; it was piercing, unnatural, and filled with an emotion Ryker couldn’t name."Daniel," Ryker whispered, his voice trembling. His knuckles whitened as he gripped his sword tighter. "This… this isn’t real. You died. I was there."Daniel tilted his head slightly, his expression unreadable. "Is that what you remember? My death? Or was it your failure?"Ryker flinched as if struck. "Don’t. Don’t you dare do that.""Oh, but isn’t that why you’ve carried this weight for so long?" Daniel stepped closer, the white void rippling beneath his feet. "You’ve built your life around that guilt, Ryker. Every battle, every decision, it’s all been to silence the voice in your head that reminds you of how you let me die.""That’s not
