Fired. It felt like the floor had dropped out from under him. $500. Gone. His thoughts spiraled. Heā€™d promised herā€”heā€™d promised.

The wig, he thought, the birthday gift I promised her. Sheā€™s been so patient with me, always supporting me when no one else would. How can I face her now? How can I keep disappointing her?

He thought about his girlfriend, Mia. Few years together, and not once had she ever made him feel like he wasnā€™t enough. Despite all the snide remarks, the people who looked down on him, and the humiliating jobs heā€™d taken just to get by, she never once turned her back on him. She really loves me. I know it. Even when he had nothingā€”when he was scraping the bottom, she was there, cheering him on, reminding him that one day things would get better..

What am I going to say to her?

He pictured her faceā€”the way she always smiled at him, even when he had nothing to offer. ā€œIā€™ll make it right,ā€ heā€™d promised. But how could he?

He stopped in front of her door. He stood there for a moment, practicing his words.

ā€œMia, Iā€™m sorry. I got fired. I couldnā€™t get the gift. But I swear, Iā€™ll make it up to you.ā€

No, that sounds weak. Sheā€™ll never buy that.

He cleared his throat, trying again.

ā€œMia, Iā€™ve failed. But Iā€™m not giving up. Iā€™ll get it back. Iā€™ll get us back to where we were. I wonā€™t let you down again.ā€

His breath caught in his throat. He stood there for what felt like an eternity. Then, just as he was about to raise his hand to knock, the door swung open, revealing Mia.

She stood there in nothing but a bedroom robe, her hair still damp from the shower. But it wasnā€™t the robe that caught Dante off guardā€”it was the look in her eyes.

Her gaze flickered across him, and her lips pressed into a thin line, almost as if she was... waiting. Expecting someone.

ā€œDante.ā€ Her voice was cold, sharp. Not the warm, gentle tone he was used to.

He felt a lump rise in his throat. ā€œMiaā€¦ Iā€”ā€

Danteā€™s chest tightened as Mia crossed her arms, the coldness in her voice slicing through him. ā€œYou donā€™t even know what time it is, Dante. What are you doing here?ā€ Her gaze flicked nervously to the door again, like she was waiting for someone else to show up.

Whatā€™s going on? Danteā€™s mind raced. The Mia he knew would never be like this. Never so distant, so cold.

ā€œIā€¦ I need to tell you something,ā€ Dante said, his voice shaking with uncertainty.

Mia exhaled sharply, her eyes narrowing as she stood in the doorway. ā€œYou want to tell me something? Fine. But I have something to tell you too. You go first.ā€

He swallowed hard, his hands trembling. This is it. Iā€™ll explain it all. Sheā€™ll understand.

ā€œIā€™m sorry, Mia,ā€ he began, his voice barely above a whisper. ā€œI couldnā€™t get you the gift. The wig. I promised you I would, butā€”ā€

Miaā€™s lips twisted into something that wasnā€™t quite a smile. ā€œOh, you couldnā€™t get it?ā€ she interrupted, her tone dripping with disbelief. ā€œAre you serious, Dante? How could I expect anything different from you? Always promising, but never delivering. Youā€™re pathetic.ā€

Danteā€™s heart cracked at her words. Pathetic?

ā€œNo, Mia, please, itā€™s not like that.ā€ His breath hitched as he tried to explain. ā€œI got fired today. The money I was saving for the giftā€”itā€™s gone. But Iā€™m going to make things right, I swear.ā€

Her eyes flickered with something that felt like indifference. ā€œFired, huh?ā€ she said, her voice flat. ā€œWhat a surprise. Always running around, failing at everything.ā€

ā€œIā€™m trying! Iā€™m doing everything I can toā€”ā€

But Mia raised her hand, cutting him off. ā€œI donā€™t want to hear it anymore. I donā€™t have to sit here listening to you make excuses for every damn thing you canā€™t do. Iā€™ve heard it all before.ā€

Dante froze. The words hit him like a slap to the face. He felt like the floor was dropping out beneath him.

ā€œMia, whatā€¦ what are you saying?ā€ He stepped forward, his hands reaching out instinctively, wanting to touch her, wanting her to see he was still the same person, still the person who loved her.

But Mia turned her back on him, her voice sharp as she spoke again, ā€œIā€™m not interested in this anymore, Dante.ā€

His mind stopped. ā€œWhat? What do you mean?ā€

Her voice grew colder, if that was even possible. ā€œIā€™m done. Itā€™s over.ā€

Dante couldnā€™t process what she was saying. Itā€™s over? His mind whirled. How could it be?

ā€œWhy?ā€ he whispered, his voice hoarse. ā€œWhy, Mia? After everything, after two years?ā€

She didnā€™t look at him, her face turned away, as if she couldnā€™t stand the sight of him anymore. ā€œBecause I donā€™t need this. I need more. I need someone whoā€™s actually going to make it, Dante. Someone who doesnā€™t just talk about change, but actually does it.ā€

His heart was shattering, the weight of her words crushing him. More? What does that even mean?

Before he could speak again, the door behind her creaked open. Danteā€™s breath caught in his throat as a man stepped into the room, his presence so confident it felt almost suffocating.

The manā€™s hand rested casually on Miaā€™s shoulder, then slid down to her waist. Dante blinked, disbelief flashing across his face.

ā€œHey, babe,ā€ the man said, his voice low and smooth, as he wrapped his arms around Mia from behind, pulling her close. Danteā€™s eyes widened as the manā€™s hands slid down her body, his fingers brushing over her chest, cupping her breasts.

Danteā€™s breath hitched, his stomach twisting in knots. What the hell is happening?

Mia didnā€™t even flinch. She didnā€™t push him away. In fact, she leaned back against him, her eyes never leaving Danteā€™s as she spoke in a cool, detached tone.

ā€œYou see, Dante? This is what Iā€™ve been waiting for. Someone who actually knows how to treat me.ā€

Danteā€™s mind went blank. The manā€™s hands were still on her, his fingers caressing her in ways Dante had never even dared to. He couldnā€™t breathe.

Heā€™d never touched her like that. Not once. And nowā€¦ now here she was, with someone else, someone from his past.

Lucas?

His mind screamed the word, but his body refused to move. The man standing behind Mia, holding her so casually, was none other than his cousin.

ā€œLucasā€¦?ā€ The name barely left Danteā€™s lips, a strangled whisper that seemed to hang in the air, mocking him.

Mia didnā€™t even flinch when Dante spoke. She didnā€™t look at him, didnā€™t even seem to care. She was too focused on Lucas, resting her head back against him.

ā€œYeah,ā€ Lucas said, his voice smooth, almost too calm. He casually brushed a stray lock of hair off Miaā€™s shoulder, his hand lingering there longer than necessary. "Surprised to see me here, cousin?"

Lucas smiled, his eyes glinting with malicious amusement as he studied Dante. His gaze traveled up and down Danteā€™s figure, taking in the faded clothes, the unkempt hair, the weariness etched on his face. ā€œYou really let yourself go, didnā€™t you?ā€ Lucas said, his voice dripping with mockery. He couldnā€™t hide his amusement. ā€œI canā€™t believe youā€™re still standing, Dante. Honestly, I thought youā€™d be gone by now. You always were good at disappointing everyone.ā€ Danteā€™s fists clenched, but he said nothing. ā€œLook at you,ā€ Lucas continued, stepping closer, his designer clothes gleaming in the dim light. ā€œI guess I never understood what Mia saw in you. But now... itā€™s pretty clear, isnā€™t it? Youā€™ve been nothing but a wallet, a paycheck. You were useful for a while, but now? Youā€™re just... pathetic.ā€ Mia stood behind Lucas, arms crossed, her expression as cold as ice. There was no warmth in her eyes, no hint of regret. Only the bitter truth. ā€œYou know, Dante, I really tried to make it

Lucas stood over Dante, a smug grin plastered on his face as he watched him struggle to move after being discarded like a piece of trash. The moment was bitterly satisfying, and he savored it. "Look at you," Lucas sneered, bending down just enough to whisper in Dante's ear. "You're nothing. Just like your father, in the end. I poisoned him, Dante. Did you ever wonder why he died the way he did? It was me. Your old man thought he was dying of some illness. Too bad, right? He never saw the real enemy." Danteā€™s vision blurred, not just from the pain, but from the shock of hearing Lucasā€™s confession. His chest tightened, the betrayal weighing heavier than his physical injuries. His father... poisoned by Lucas? The world felt like it was spinning out of control. "What... what do you mean?" Dante gasped, his breath coming in short, painful bursts. He couldnā€™t grasp the depth of what Lucas was saying. It made no sense. It couldnā€™t be true. Lucas chuckled, his voice dark and mocking. "He
