Chapter 5: Family Ties

CHAPTER 5

Jack remained in a vegetative state for two weeks, going in and out of consciousness. The lady who had rescued had him put in a room in her rented mansion. She had the best doctors in the country attending to him.

Jack had two maids assigned to clean his body everyday when he was in coma. One of them was cleaning his body and she admired the man laying in the bed, clad in only his boxers as she wiped him with a wet cloth.

She admired his handsome square face, even though his beards were outgrown. Her eyes trailed on his firm chest as she wiped them down to his chiseled abs. She gulped when she saw the huge bulge in his boxers and a naughty thought crossed her mind.

She traced lines on his abs with her fingers, getting carried away by his Greek godlike body and forgetting her job when Jack suddenly woke up and caught her hand, yanking it off him.

“Who are you?” He asked in a murderous tone, glaring deathly at her.

The young lady thought she was dead, she just got caught by her madam’s guest being inappropriate with his body.

She stammered in fear. “I-I am- I-”

The door flew open at that moment and they both turned to see the young lady that had saved Jack walk in.

Jack narrowed his eyes on her as he recognized who she was. He swore a long time ago that he wanted nothing to do with her or her family ever again.

“Mildred…..what the hell am I doing here? How did you even find me?” Jack’s tone did not hold back his anger.

“Hello to you too brother,” Mildred replied, lighting up a cigarette. “Leave us,” She instructed the maid who bowed and hurried away.

Mildred Bolton was the biological daughter of Jack’s foster parents. After five years of marriage with no children, Aaron and Hannah Bolton decided to adopt a child. That child was a boy named Jack and after two years of adopting Jack, Hannah Bolton became pregnant and gave birth to twins, Mildred and Marlon Bolton.

Eight years ago, when Jack was only twenty two years old, he was one of the youngest finance prodigies in Milton city, USA, handling deals worth billions of dollars but when someone set Jack up with a deal that cost the family over a hundred billion dollars, Aaron Bolton axed him out and ostracized him from the family.

Jack was bitter that a family he had sacrificed so much for did not believe that he was set up. Everyone believed that he stole the money, so one day Jack just packed up from Milton City and came to Coral city where he met Grandma Kent as a garbage collector and eventually saved her life.

Mildred was only seventeen when Jack left home but now she was twenty five and a full grown and beautiful woman.

“What do you want?” Jack asked in a low but firm tone as memories of the things that happened to him at the police station started returning to him.

“We have been looking for you brother, who would have thought all these years you were hiding in a family, being a live-in son-in-law? You abandoned us, that’s not fair,” Mildred replied in an accusatory tone, looking intently into Jack’s eyes.

“Excuse me?” Jack retorted hastily in irritation. “I know you were barely eighteen then but you were smart enough to know what happened. Your father pushed me away, took my job, my position, my life. He believed that I stole from him.”

Jack was getting angry as he thought back to everything he endured during that period. “Don’t ever tell me that I abandoned you, because you abandoned me first!” Jack slammed his fist on the bed. His chest rising and falling in anger as he tried to calm his temper.

“No…..that was never dad’s intention,” Mildred put out the cigarette and held Jack’s arm, looking remorsefully into his eyes. “He only did that to fish out the people responsible for setting you up. He had to make it look real, but you left before he could get them.”

Jack yanked his hand away from her. “Lies! If he had such a plan, he would have told me so I would play along, not disgrace me in public and castigate me in private.”

“It’s the truth brother…..Mother hasn’t been herself since you left. Even if you didn’t care for your father and your siblings, what about our poor mother?”

Mildred started to cry. “You broke her heart when you left. She has never stopped looking for you. You know you were her favorite child. She became terribly ill because of your absence and is now a former shadow of herself. Please come home with me Jack. Dad will apologize and explain everything to you himself.”

Jack’s heart ached at the mention of his foster mother. She truly loved him and Jack loved her dearly too and during that time, she was the only one that supported him but Jack just had to leave to save himself the shame and disgrace that came with the scandal.

“Home? Home!” Jack suddenly remembered that he needed to go home. Bianca would have been expecting him since yesterday.

“Can we have this discussion later, I haven’t been home since yesterday, my wife will be worried,” Jack said and stood up from the bed, searching for his clothes.

“Yesterday? Brother, you have been out for two weeks,” Mildred said, walking to the wardrobe and giving Jack a pair of expensive designer jeans, shoes and shirt that she had bought for him.

“What?! That’s even worse,” Jack replied anxiously.

He hastily got dressed and left for the Kent family home, promising Mildred that he would return soon.

As he made his way to the Kent family mansion, Jack thought that the Kent family would now even have more reason to believe that he actually did drugs and that he had run away after being exposed. And Bianca, Oh his precious wife, what would she even think of him?
