“Shit!” Rylan yelled as he sat before his MacBook.
Eve Daystar rushed out of the kitchen to see what was going on. She found Rylan, her husband looking distraught as he rubbed his head facing his MacBook. There was a glass of scotch beside him as he sat on the dining table which was just outside the kitchen. It was a strange setup they both seemed comfortable with. Eve walked up to him and caressed his back. Rylan had a white T-shirt on and his dark brown hair looked disheveled as they covered his forehead.“What is it, honey?” She asked.Rylan sighed and pushed the MacBook into her view.“My application letter has been declined,” he said. “I didn’t get the job.”Eve placed a kiss on his cheek. Rylan was feeling down. He reached for his glass of scotch and took a sip from it.“Don’t worry baby,” she said, trying to console him. “Just keep trying, you’ll get there soon.”Rylan ran his fingers through his disheveled hair in frustration. He was thinking about his next move. The job had demanded him to move to New York and it had been brilliant. It meant that he wouldn’t have to see Eve’s parents every day of the week and there would be no more occasional family dinners. Last night he had been at one of those family dinners, and he had been humiliated once more by Frederick and Karen. The whole family had been present. This job had been his last resort. He wondered what next was going to happen to him. With his wife secretly running out of patience unlike her family who were quite vocal about it, he had to get a good job to be able to calm the storm that seemed to be brewing behind the scenes.“I don’t know about that,” Rylan said. “I was sure about this one.”Eve chuckled at his words.“Don’t beat yourself,” she said. “They don’t know what they have missed out on.”Deep down, Eve was unsure how long she would have to keep this up. She wondered if Rylan would be able to get back on his feet. Maybe it was time she let him go.Rylan smiled at her words. She always had something to say whenever he was down to soothe him. She was a miracle in his life and he was glad that he had found her very early. He wondered what his life would be if he hadn’t met Eve. It would have been bland. Rylan shuddered in irritation at the thought of that.Suddenly, the front door swung open and a figure stepped into the house. Eve and Rylan turned sharply to see what was happening. It was Frederick McCullough and he had a grim look on his face. Here we go again, Rylan said to himself as Frederick approached them.Rylan rose from the stool and walked towards him. At the door, another figure stepped in. It was Karen, and she had a sinister smile on her face. Her black hair was pulled back neatly into a ponytail and her flower dress stunned in the light that gushed into the house through the front door. Eve furrowed her brows as she watched her step into the house. Whatever was going to happen, she knew it was going to be catastrophic.“Why are you still here?” Frederick demanded.“Excuse me?” Rylan asked, confused.Frederick turned to his daughter.“Why is he still here, Eve?” He asked.Eve was lost. She was trying her best to fathom what was happening around her, but she just couldn’t. She was confused.“Get your things and leave!” Frederick ordered. “You are no longer welcome here!”Rylan cranked his eyebrow in confusion.“What?” He asked.Frederick stood before him and Rylan could vividly see the rage in his eyes. It was then he realized that Frederick wasn’t kidding. He wanted him gone.“Dad. Stop this now!” Eve ordered.Frederick turned to his daughter and glared at her.“Don’t you ever raise your voice at me!” He yelled at her. “I’m doing what is best for you.”Eve clenched her jaws as she heard that. She could feel the rage accumulating in her chest.“You don’t know what is best for me!” She yelled back.Frederick made a step towards her but halted and turned back to Rylan who was still looking confused. Karen on the other hand sat on the couch and sipped her cappuccino as she watched the drama unfold before her. She was the one who had told Frederick to kick Rylan out of the house. Frederick had been worried yesterday about Eve, and she had brought the idea up. This was certain to break Rylan. He would run back to wherever he came from and never show his face again. This was to show him that he couldn’t mess with the McCulloughs. There was no way he was going to steal their wealth while she was still alive. Her father had worked hard for that. All Karen had to do was say the right words and Frederick yielded immediately. She smiled in satisfaction at Eve’s face which was livid with rage.“Don’t make me repeat myself!” Frederick barked at Rylan.Rylan was fed up by this. He couldn’t take this anymore. He was tired of the humiliation he was getting from Frederick. Frederick had made him feel completely useless. He was going to lose his mind if this kept on. It was time he left.“I’m done having to put up with this shit!” Rylan yelled back. “I’m tired of you having to ruin my life with every single chance you have. I’m done!”His tone surprised Frederick while to Karen it was exhilarating. Eve was stunned by this. Rylan turned to her with rage in his eyes.“Eve! Get your things! We are leaving this instant!” He ordered.“Eve isn’t going anywhere with you,” Frederick said.Rylan who was making his way towards the stairs halted and turned to him.“Huh?” He asked.“She is staring right here, where she would be properly taken care of,” Frederick said.“There’s no way I’m letting my sister suffer with you,” Karen called from the couch.Rylan had barely noticed her. His eyes went to Eve who was looking confused and feeble. It looked like they had finally gotten to her. It was over.“Eve. Are you coming or not?” He asked.Eve’s eyes went to Frederick's who was glaring at her. It was now she saw everything. She was breaking away from her family. This was her worst nightmare. She couldn’t leave them to stay with a family she wasn’t sure existed. It was time she opened her eyes and saw things for what they were.“I’m sorry, Rylan,” she replied.Rylan’s eyes lit up in horror. He couldn’t believe it. It had finally happened. His worst fear was coming alive before him. Eve had neglected him. This was the end for him.“Fine,” he said and walked upstairs.Frederick walked up to his daughter and placed a hand on her shoulder.“You did the right thing,” he said.***Lightning struck the clouds as the rain fell heavily. Rylan was completely soaked as he stood before the door in a strange hallway. He had his luggage in his hand which was also wet. The door swung open, finally revealing a chubby-looking man with a pair of Harry Potter glasses on the bridge of his nose. The man smiled as he recognized Rylan.“Rylan Daystar!” He exclaimed in excitement.“Hey, Tristan,” Rylan began.“I need a favor.”Rylan Daystar sighed as he gripped the door handle of Frederick’s office. He inhaled deeply before opening the door and stepping into the office. A wave of cold air brushed his cheek as he stood by the door. Frederick was closing a file that had engulfed his attention. As he placed the file by the side of his desk, he lifted his eyes and folded his hands on his desk. He smiled as he saw Rylan standing before him. Rylan looked like a mess. He looked terrible but that didn’t matter to Fredrick. This was the last time he was going to set his eyes on him. “Rylan. Good morning, please have a seat,” he offered gently. Rylan was puzzled by his words. He was acting so nice which was weird to him. He sounded way different than when he was on the phone. He took a seat before Frederick looking at the desk. Underneath Frederick’s hands was a blue file. He wondered what it was. He looked up at Frederick and flashed him a smile. “It’s so good to see, Rylan,” Frederick said. “I don’t know if I f
“What changed your mind, Rylan?” Arlene Daystar asked. They were seated in the back of a tinted Cadillac as they drove back home. Rylan had arrived back in New York a few minutes ago, and already had a convoy waiting for him. Trust Arlene to overdo it. He felt like the prodigal son when he hugged his mother. This was the life he had left behind to be with Eve. This was the truth he couldn’t bring himself to tell her. This wasn’t the life that Rylan wanted. He had tried his best to run away from it. But here he was back at where it all began. “A lot,” Rylan said. Arlene sighed as she heard him. Rylan was different now. She had known something was up when he phoned her. She hadn’t heard from Rylan in two years. When Williams, their butler had told her it was Rylan, she had scrambled to her feet to get the phone from him. Hearing his voice again was satisfying. She was happy that he had changed his mind. As their mansion came into view, Rylan clenched his jaws. He didn’t fancy any of
“Revenge?” Arlene asked baffled. “Yes Mom,” Rylan replied, rising from his chair. Arlene looked at her son completely shocked. There was something different about him that was for sure. He was nothing like the Rylan she raised. What had happened to him? After being away for almost three years, he was back ready to take the wealth he had once rejected. “What happened to you, Rylan?” She asked. “Where were you all this time?”Rylan chuckled as he heard her words. He was pacing around the huge table with his hands behind him. A lot was going on in his mind. He was ready to get to work immediately. But he still felt it was too soon. He needed time to let everything settle. He had lost everything and also gained a lot from it. “I was learning,” he replied. Arlene looked at her son completely confused. He wasn’t making sense. “Learning?” She asked. “Yes,” Rylan replied stopping. He turned to her and leaned on one of the chairs. Arlene took a sit on one of the chairs. Rylan looked a
Rylan Daystar stepped out of the SUV and shut the door. He took off his shades and gazed at the mansion before him. The big doors spread open and Williams walked out of it making his way towards him. Rylan flashed a smile at him. “Young Master,” Williams said. “I’m glad you have returned.”Rylan nodded at him. “Thank you, Williams,” he appreciated. Williams headed to the trunk and lifted it, taking out his luggage. He walked back into the house leaving Rylan in the driveway. Rylan turned around and faced his surroundings. Being back in Los Angeles gave him a nostalgic feeling. As time flew without hesitation, it was already five years gone. Those years he had spent away were productive. It was time he got back what he had lost—his dignity. Rylan sighed and stepped into the house. He nodded his head as he looked around the large living room. He had bought the house a few days before he left. It looked spotless as he walked through it. Williams had managed to keep it clean while h
There was a huge crowd outside the event. It seemed to be packed with people and paparazzi. It was the biggest party in town that night and was being attended by big names. Amid the ruckus, a black Porsche approached the scene. The crowd gave it room and it halted in front of the red carpet. The door was lifted and a tall figure stepped out of the car. It was Rylan Daystar. He was dressed in a black suit which brought oh the amber glow in his eyes. His dark brown hair was combed back perfectly and it glittered courtesy of the flashes of the paparazzi’s cameras. Nobody seemed to recognize him but that didn’t matter. They couldn’t stop taking photos of the gorgeous man standing before them. A valet came towards Rylan and dropped his key into his hand. Rylan watched his car get driven away before stepping onto the red carpet. He was feeling confident. Tonight was the night he was going to make his first appearance as the billionaire entrepreneur, Rylan Daystar. He walked through the red
Frederick McCullough threw the lamp off his desk in rage. He watched the lamp roll across the floor gently heading towards the door. There were so many questions running through his mind. How was this possible? How did Rylan accumulate such an amount of wealth in a short span? It was almost impossible. Five years! It took him only five years to become richer than him. It was unbelievable. Frederick ran his fingers through his black hair in frustration. He was in a dilemma. What was he going to do about Rylan? He owned a major share in one of his most prized possessions. There was no way he could convince the other shareholders to make Rylan sell his share. Ever since Rylan had become the anonymous shareholder, the business had boomed. Ratings were off the charts and sales were increasing expeditiously. It was insane to think that Rylan could do something like that. He had always thought of Rylan as useless. Never for once did he know he could be that smart. There was a possibility he
“Stay away from me!” Dayton screamed as he ran away from a man pursuing him. The man who was dressed in black held a silver .45 Winchester magnum as he chased his victim. Dayton could feel his heart racing as he ran for his life. He realized quickly that there was no one coming to save him. This could be the last moments of his life. The man in black squeezed the trigger of the .45 magnum and the bullet whizzed past Dayton’s ear. Dayton turned back to the man and realized that he was closing in on him. He had to make as much distance as he could away from the man. Another shot was fired and this time, the bullet flew over his head. Dayton rushed towards the corner and disappeared into the darkness. The man in black saw this and headed after him. A few meters away, a black sedan was parked and a figure with a black mask inhabited the vehicle. He held the steering wheel with a pair of black gloves concealing his hands. He tapped the steering wheel impatiently and it seemed he was wait
“Partner?” Detective Rogers questioned. “Yes, Rogers?” Lieutenant Wesley said. “I’m sure you’ll do well to make her feel welcome.”“I didn’t ask for a partner, Lieutenant,” he pointed out. “I can take care of myself perfectly.”Lieutenant Wesley turned to Jain who seemed lost in the middle of everything. “Can you give us a minute, Reynolds?” He asked. Jain nodded and walked out of the door. Lieutenant Wesley rose from his desk and slammed both hands on his desk. “What the hell do you think you’re doing, Rogers?” He barked through his gritted teeth. “Lieutenant. I don’t need a partner,” Stanley pointed out. “I’ve been riding solo for two years now.”“Well, that’s over now. It’s either you get used to having someone watching your back or you get lost.”Stanley Rogers sighed. He needed a cigarette badly, but he couldn’t smoke in here. That would get on Lieutenant Wesley’s nerves. “Fine.”“What? I didn’t get that.”Stanley knew that Lieutenant Wesley had heard him perfectly. He was
