CHAPTER 80

Lana Pierce dumped her basket of groceries on the counter and sighed. It was about time she got to the counter. She had been waiting in line for almost fifteen minutes. Impatience has been one of her virtues lately. She couldn’t stand people anymore, especially what her colleagues had done to her. They had tried to kill her because she was against murdering an innocent man. And she was certain they were going to do it again.

The lady at the counter, a black woman with plump cheeks whose braids were tucked under the store’s cap on her head, moved her jacket to the side and began taking out all the groceries. She passed them through the machine, and when she was done, she packed them all into two brown grocery bags handing them to Lana. Lana got it from her and nodded in satisfaction.

“Thank you.”

The woman nodded, chewing her gum recklessly. Lana found it to be a slight nuisance.

“That will be forty-nine dollars and thirty-five cents,” the woman said.
