Shocking betrayal

Lucas was anxiously standing at the bus station waiting for the next bus to convey him to his house. If he had not taken laxative drugs for cold the previous night, he wouldn't have overslept this morning. The bus arrived some minutes later, but as he was about to step onto the bus, he dipped his hand into his pocket to check his ID card and he found it empty.

" Shit, I have forgotten I changed the pants I wore yesterday", he lamented. The distance from the bus station to his house was not far so he rushed down home to pick up his ID.

A stone's throw from his house, he spotted a lady's face being kissed by a man. Lucas rubbed his hand over his face, and he couldn't believe what he just saw.

" It's not possible, I might be hallucinating", Lucas thought. As he moved nearer, he could vividly see his wife smiling through the kiss.

"Elena!" He shouted. Elena looked shocked, she hurriedly detached herself from the man kissing her and turned around to the person calling her. With a shaking voice, "Hi Lucas, why are you still home at this time? Ain't you supposed to be at work"

" Work? Is this what you usually do whenever I leave for work? You brought a man home. For goodness sake, are you that cheap?", he roared.

" It's not what you think Lucas, he is only checking something that fell into my eyes. There is no funny business going on", Elena defended with a shaky voice.

" Really? It's not what I think right? Was Kissing a man in front of our house now justified?"

"  Trust me, Lucas, nothing is going on. How else do you want me to explain to you? And this is my house Lucas, not our house" she retorted demonstrating with her two hands.

"Agreed, it's your house but that doesn't mean you have any right to bring a man into the house like a whore. We are married for goodness sake!" Lucas complained bitterly. He was hurt beyond imagination and it was obvious.

 "Don't you dare call me names! having a boyfriend doesn't make me a slut! You are the one that failed as my husband!" She retorted.

Alex Robinson, who was standing beside his car, was confused. He moved closer to Elena and tapped her gently from the back. 

"What is going on here? You didn't tell me that you are married!" He asked with his usual calm Voice.

Elena smiled, then touched his shirt as if she was dusting it, "Don't worry baby, he is not my husband but our family servant. I can take care of him".

"Servant? Did Elena just refer to me as a servant?" Lucas was stunned, questioning no one in particular.

" Oh okay then, are you sure it's safe if I leave you alone with him?", Alex asked looking worried.

" Of course darling, he cannot do anything other than bark like a toothless dog".

She kissed Alex, then he vacated the environment.

Lucas was hurt, his heart was shattered. He couldn't believe the scene before him. He knew Elena did not love him right from the day they got married. Marriage? Was that even counted as marriage? Elena refused to get intimate with him since their wedding, but he thought sacrificing himself by doing all the work of a servant in the house would change her heart towards him. It was love at first sight, he loved his wife but he couldn't believe she would be cheating on him.

" Look here Mr", Lucas was brought back from his thoughts looking at the vixen that stood before him. She showed no remorse for her actions.

" I think it's high time I revealed everything that has been happening here. You see Alex who just left here is my boyfriend and we are planning to get married. I'm carrying his baby" Elena said, rubbing her belly.

" You're what!? " Lucas asked to confirm his ear drum was not faulty. 

" Yes, I'm pregnant, " Elena answered again.

"Cheating on me wasn't enough! You-you-you are pregnant for him? And what did I hear you say now? You are planning to get married, have you forgotten you are still married to me? Did our marriage vows mean nothing to you? How heartless can you be? I have done nothing but show you love and care in this marriage. Is this how you will pay me back? Lucas asked, burning with rage.

" Oh please, marriage? Is this what is called marriage? It's obvious this marriage wasn't genuine from the onset, but your dumbass believed it could work out for us. And you mentioned love? What is love without money? You can't even take me out on my birthdays not to talk of celebrating Valentine's Day together. You practically feed from hand to mouth and you think in that empty head of yours that I will stay with you? You must be joking. I got married to you to satisfy my grandfather. I needed my inheritance and that old man gave me the condition of getting married  to you before I lay my hands on them. So this is not marriage", Elena said showing no sign of remorse.

Catherine, Elena's mother, laughed out loud, coming outside with a glass of wine in her right hand. She had been listening to their conversation all this while.

" Sweetheart, is this pregnancy Mr Robinson? She asked, looking at her daughter.

Elena nodded, "Yes Mom and he was happy when I informed him"

Catherine was excited to hear the good news. Now her dream of becoming a mother-in-law to a rich man had begun to manifest. She faced Lucas

" Will you stop asking stupid questions and cook for the baby? As you can see, my precious daughter is pregnant and needs to eat healthily for the baby to develop well. So go inside the kitchen and prepare a delicious meal for her".

She faced her daughter, "You don't need to stress yourself explaining to this fool darling, a pregnant woman should not talk too much". 

Lucas was dumbfounded! They both knew his wife was cheating on him and they still wanted him to be the servant as well. He stared at his mother-in-law surprisingly, "You are aware of all these, Mom. You are aware your daughter has turned into a cheap whore because of money?"

 He was yet to finish the statement when a loud slap landed on his left cheek.

 "How dare you call my daughter names? Also,  don't you ever call me mom, because I am not your mother! I can't give birth to a Pauper like you! ". 

Lucas stood there blankly. He could not believe what was happening. Three years ago, he was coming out of the orphanage. He had planned to fend for himself after his eighteenth birthday, but he couldn't leave because his nanny at the orphanage, Claire, was sick. Claire was the one who picked him up at the entrance of a church when he was a baby. She was the only one he knew as a mother. She showered him with love and nurtured him as a humble and respectful man. He had to stay behind and take care of her when she was diagnosed with leukemia. It was devastating and difficult for him to bear, but he was strong.  Lucas left the orphanage immediately after Claire's burial.

 He had nowhere to go but he planned to look for a job as a waiter, before searching for accommodation. He saw a vacancy notice at Steve Foods and as he decided to shoot his shot, He saw an old man trying to cross to the other side of the road, at the same time a careless teenager was riding a motorbike towards the old man. As the bike was about to hit the man, he dragged him away from the road and he was hit instead. Lucas suffered a minor injury on his hand but thankfully the old man was saved.

" Hey, are you okay? I'm sorry you're hurt because of me", George asked worriedly.

George Steve was the Ceo of Steve foods. He owned a big restaurant close to the supermarket and he was hoping to pass it on to his precious granddaughter, Elena.

"Yeah I'm good, are you okay though"Lucas asked the man.

" I'm okay. Thanks for saving me. Can you please allow me to take you to the hospital for a thorough check"

" No sir, I'm seriously okay."

" I know you look okay, but I need to be sure. follow me. My restaurant is over there" George asked, pointing to the big building beside the supermarket.

" Okay if you insist," Lucas answered.

Grandpa George took Lucas to his restaurant, entertained him, and later took him to the hospital for a proper check-up. He allowed him to leave after he was sure Lucas was free of any harm, but he gave him his business card to visit him the second day. After the incident, Lucas had been like his lost son. He loved and adored him, since then he had vowed to get him married to his granddaughter.

Elena was furious when she heard her grandfather wanted to get her married to Lucas, but she couldn't refuse due to the condition attached to it. George had promised to forfeit her right as the rightful heir to his restaurant if she refused to get married to Lucas. Elena had been a spoiled girl. She was the classy type hoping to hook up with a promising young rich man one day, so she didn't take the news of her grandfather well. She connived with her mother and they planned to make the marriage hell for him.

Shortly after the wedding, George died after a brief illness and they had made Lucas' life a living hell since then. He practically did all the odd chores of a servant in the house. But Lucas was not offended, because he thought his wife's mind would change towards him one day. Now all his dreams and hopes have been shattered.

He was sad and furious. At this same time, Elena disagreed with her mother's suggestion, " No Mom, he doesn't need to cook for me. He has to leave straight away". 

She turned to Lucas and said arrogantly,   "Go inside and pack your things. Wait for me at the court early tomorrow morning our divorce papers will be ready by then" 

She needed to divorce him now so that Alex would not get angry.

 Lucas held his fist tightly, he tried to say something but his mother-in-law sneered, she opened the door and threw Lucas's belongings out of the door.

Lucas felt so shameful, he was disappointed in his wife and mother-in-law. Not only did he lose his wife, he was also sent back to the street rendering him homeless again.

He carried his small backpack that contained his clothes, aimlessly on the road without a reasonable destination in his mind.  He was lost in thought when he heard a screaming voice" Help!!!".

"Help?" He stood there confusedly, not knowing the next thing to do.
