The Divorce

Lucas stared at Alex for sometime, then he frowned. Although he was betrayed, he didn't show his emotions. If it were to be before when he had nobody, when he thought he was alone in this world, his life would have been shattered,but after the previous night occurrence, he was rest assured he wasn't hopeless. 

He even felt stronger after learning of his hidden gifts and knowing he had a kingdom somewhere, his mind was at rest. 

He knew Marie would come again to teach him what he needed to know. With patience, everything will fall back into place. He would be a great man.

He remembered one of Claire's lessons when he was at the orphanage, there were times they would sleep hungry because there were not enough resources to feed them.

Some money sent by the government to the orphanage was spent by some greedy officials, and foods set aside for them were being shared also.

Claire taught them to always be strong, no matter the condition they found themselves in. She taught them how to withstand hunger and famine. She taught them not to be involved in any crimes, that they should believe there will always be light at the end of a tunnel. Those are the words that always made Lucas look stronger.

Not minding the mockery, he looked at Alex and said indifferently; " Let's end this marriage now"

Elena looked stunned. She didn't expect the bold response from Lucas. She looked at Lucas from head to toe; checking if he was the same man she knew. 

" The Lucas I know would have been begging me not to divorce him, but this man standing before me showed no sign of hurt. Where did he get this confidence from?", she thought to herself unhappily.

Alex was angered and offended by the amount of confidence oozing out of Lucas. His thought was that; the least the poor man could do was to look pitiful and detected, yet he stood before them like a strong man. He didn't look like someone about getting divorce at all.

Hearing Lucas' bold response, he sneered and said he would prefer the marriage to be done with immediately.

They met the Court's clerk at the reception.  She looked like a barbie, with her painted nails and big eye-lashes and fake hair. As she sighted Alex, she couldn't help but to blush. 

" This man is so handsome and must be rich", she thought

She smiled at Alex, " I like your outfit sir, and you look handsome"

Alex jerked his clothes at the clerk's complement. " Thanks for the compliment", he said, then tipped the clerk with a few dollar notes.

Elena looked dejectedly at Lucas, " can you see the flattering face of the clerk?. That is the power of money. Look how he is appreciated and respected. This is the kind of life I want, not a poverty-wrecked life."

The female clerk who couldn't hide her happiness; faced Elena

"Welcome Mr and  Mrs Armstrong, how can I help you", the clerk asked the couple.

" We have an appointment with Barrister Williams, I hope he is around", Elena said.

" Yeah, He has been waiting for you guys. Please go in through the first door by the left, that's his office"

"Okay thanks,but can you please lead the way?" Elena said 

" No problem ma'am", the clerk answered

"Can you please wait for us outside baby, spare me some minutes to finish this", Elena asked Alex

" No problem babe, you can take your time", Alex replied.

Then, Elena walked in with the official arrogantly. She made sure she was leading because she didn't want to walk with Lucas.

Lucas looked at her flabbergasted, he couldn't believe his soon-to-be ex-wife could be as shameless as this, but nevertheless, he shouldn't worry because they would get divorce anyways.

Immediately they were seated inside the lawyer's office,the barrister welcomed them. Everything for the divorce was already prepared.

Lucas' stomach made a noice that showed he was hungry. He looked embarrassed at that moment and his hands were shaking. Elena chose that moment to ridicule him the most.

" Oh you are hungry, What a poor man you are. See what poverty has done to you. You could not feed yourself and you expect me to be suffering with you? Hahahaha, what a shame".

The barrister looked between the couples, he was stunned to see the amount of hatred Elena had for her husband.

 He thought it's wise to get the divorce, if not, Elena could kill this man. But his profession did note permit him to meddle into people's affairs unnecessarily.

"Okay take this form and fill out the required information. Since there is no property to share, this will not take long." He gave the divorce form to the couple.

The couple filled out the form and returned it to the lawyer.

The documentation was done immediately and they were officially divorced.

" You are now  officially divorced, and you can go your separate ways now. Have a nice day" he said as he shook the couple.

" Finally, I'm now free of the sham called marriage. We can now start preparing for our wedding baby", Elena said to Alex as she got out of the court.

As Alex turned to Lucas who was weak due to hunger, he started his mockery all over again.

" Now that you are jobless and homeless, I can help you as a man with a good heart. It's not that you have a choice anyways, you have nowhere else to go"

" I can offer you a job as a cleaner in my company, only if you would abide by my rules. But before setting the rules, you have to be on your knees, lick my feet and call me master, before you can be given the job. Afterall, poor men like you are meant to worship rich men like us. So are you ready"

Lucas was furious, hearing this from Alex. He held his fist, but he controlled his emotions. Any rash movement from him could land him in jail, and he didn't want to be tagged" ex-convict" by the society.

Elena also joined her lover in the mockery. She hugged him, then praised him; " that's so sweet of you baby. You even offered his wretched self a job. You are indeed a philanthropist.

She faced Lucas " hurry up and do what he asked of you, Lucas. Your pride and arrogance cannot put food on your table, nor will it provide shelter over your head. Accept him as your master now, then you will be able to feed that stomach that was rumbling a while ago, hahahaha" 

"You will not be able to date another girl nor get married with this hopeless poverty-stricken condition. You are such a total failure. You are a waste to the men's race."

Lucas, who had been watching the drama before him, exhaled heavily. He felt it wasn't necessary to batter words with them, at least the fit as a couple.

"Let's go and celebrate your successful divorce babe", Alex said to Elena.

Her face lightened up, this was what she wanted, a life full of enjoyment.

"Sure, let's go", she replied happily, holding onto Alex's arm.

As there were about to enter Alex's car, a girl's voice was heard, 

"Finally, I have found you", a girl said, breathing heavily.
