THE BREAK-UP

Kathryn had been distant and cold towards Michael recently, and he had been wondering what had gone wrong.

He had tried to talk to her about it, but she had always brushed him off, telling him that she was just busy with work; that her commitment at work was now taking the best of her time.

One afternoon, Michael was sitting in his living room when his phone rang. He saw that it was Kathryn, and he immediately answered it. "Hey, Kathryn, what's up?" he said, trying to sound upbeat.

"Michael, we need to talk," Kathryn said, her voice shaking a little. Michael's heart sank as he heard the words. He knew that when someone said that, it was never a good sign.

"Okay, what's going on?" he asked, trying to prepare himself for whatever bad news was coming.

"I don't know how to say this, but I think we need to break up," Kathryn said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Michael felt his heart skip a beat. "What? Why? What's going on?" he asked, his voice rising in panic.
