Chapter 9.

Mark returned home from his first day at work very tired. He went straight to shower and settled to have a nap without even bothering about dinner which got Michelle worried.

She walked to the bed after preparing dinner and went to sit by his side.

"Was today so stressful that you want to go straight to bed?" She asked him.

"Yes, it was. I spent most of my time trying to know how everything in the department I'm working in works. It was a whole lot of stress that I lost my appetite for food while on it," Mark replied.

"But you still have to eat something. No matter how you feel, I cannot watch you go to bed on an empty stomach," Michelle said to him.

"I'm very tired, my body aches," Mark murmured like a child and didn't bother to stand up.

Michelle thought about what to do and how to change her husband's mind. Sometimes he acts like a child and when he does, it was always hard to make him change his mind about something he wasn't interested in.

She climbed up his back, surprising Mark and immediately he opened his eyes.

"What are you doing?" He asked her.

"I'm giving you a massage, of course, it would relax your nerves and make your body stop hurting. Just watch me do it while you enjoy it," she replied with a grin as she set to work on him.

He relaxed back, enjoying every bit of it, by the time she was done. He was a lot better than he testified.

"So would you join me for dinner now?" She asked him with puppy eyes.

"Of Course honey, you are always going out of your way to make me happy, so why wouldn't I?" he said and kissed her lightly on the lips.

"How is my baby doing?" He asked her as he placed his hands on her stomach which was yet to start becoming big.

"He is fine," Michelle replied with a smile.

"He, I thought it was a she. I want a little princess," Mark said as he carried Michelle in a princess style and started heading to the dining.

"No, it's going to be a little prince. That's what I need," Michelle replied.

"You know how much I hate arguing with you but very soon. We would know its gender when we go for a gender review in the hospital and you would be surprised that I'm going to win," Mark replied as he dropped her down. He dragged out the chair for her to sit down before joining her.

"I bet you wouldn't win because I'm going to win," Michelle replied.

"Till then, let's eat," Mark said as passed her some beef. She bit into it and asked him to eat the rest.

Mark looked at her plate, it was empty and it looked like she wasn't going to eat.

"Ain't you eating?" Mark asked her.

"Yes, I don't feel like it, I just want to watch you eat," she replied with a smile.

"Do you want me to get you anything?" He asked her and dropped the spoon.

"No, I'm fine. I eat when I'm hungry. Just eat and I would be okay," Michelle replied.

"But the baby needs food and you don't have to_"

"I know, I would eat something later okay, just eat," Michelle urged.

Mark picked up the spoon but couldn't remove his eyes from Michelle, wondering if she was okay.

He felt disturbed but she kept on assuring him that she was fine. It made him lose his appetite. He dropped the food halfway and helped her arrange the dining, and do the dishes before they cuddled on the couch, watching the evening news together.

The next day, Mark walked into his office and found the place scattered. All the work he did the previous day which was one of the reasons he ended up being stressed out was in vain. He gritted his teeth as he wondered who might have done it.

He didn't say much and bent down to start picking up the littered documents and arranging them back.

"Hey man, what's going on here? Did anyone break into your office?" Someone asked.

He looked up and saw Mr. Davis staring at him with questioning eyes. He wondered why he was there and what he also wanted from him.

"I came to work and found this place a mess after all my hard work yesterday," Mark said.

"Seriously but do you think everyone here is happy with your position? You might not know who had been working hard for years to be promoted to this position, but you just showed up to take over it," Mr. Davis said.

"What do you mean?" Mark asked him, looking at him suspiciously.

"Never mind, I hope no important documents were torn or stolen. That might be the basis of the problem you would have with the manager because he is a very strict man who doesn't joke around," Mr. Davis said.

"Watch your mouth, are you trying to say I did this because I'm joking around or what?" Mark asked him, getting angry.

"I can't say because anyone isn't always the way they portray themselves to be. Most of them are wolves in sheep's clothing, so you have to be careful of anyone including yourself, you might end up being the reason you do leave here after using yourself to harm yourself," Mr. Davis said which Mark understood and he wanted to laugh but himself back.

"I never knew about all of this, thank you, Mr. Davis, I would have to be careful of anyone from now on. I think this place is kind of a tough place that you have to fight every day to survive and wouldn't be pushed out by your competitors. Thank you for making me know, I would have to prepare myself," Mark said with a smile which pissed Mr. Davis off but he hid it.

He was trying to scare Mark and make him become afraid like the others and resign but it seems he is tough and fearless which made it interests him more because he loves individuals like Mark.

He concluded that he would also have to work harder before he would make him leave by resigning or being fired by the manager, either way.

"I think you have to be informed, also be very careful so your position wouldn't be taken away and given to someone else before your eyes. You have to be extremely careful in order not to lose it. Many eyes are on it which you have to deal with," Mr. Davis said and turned to leave.

"I would only do my best as I ought to and also work hard to protect it. Thank you for making me know all about all of this," Mark replied.

Mr. Davis frowned and hurriedly left.

Mark thought about everything he said for some time, he never imagined that working here would be that much of a fight to keep his position. He wondered if he would be able to leave soon if he wasn't the owner of the company who disguised himself as one of its workers.

He waved it off and continued arranging the documents.
