Chapter 1
The Williams Villa was filled with business elites from all over Manhattan, New York. The Walton company, an influential business which was owned by the Williams family, was hosting a grand party to seal a business contract with the Russel Corporation, one of the most profitable companies in the heart of New York.
They had for long been trying to sign a contract deal with the Russell Corporation and now that it had happened, they had every reason to celebrate elaborately, inviting famous and respected elites all over Manhattan and New York to share in their success.
The head of the Walton company, Lady Flora Williams stood at the podium in a stunning silver gown, with a look of triumph on her face. Lady Flora Williams took over the Walton company after her husband passed away three years ago.
With a signal from her, the excitement from the guests quieted down and she raised her glass in a toast.
“Ladies and distinguished guests, join us today as we celebrate a business deal. To Russell Corporation, thank you for sharing our vision.”
There was a loud applause in the hall as the guests cheered in support.
Warren, the son-in-law of Lady Williams, watched the crowd from a distance across the hall with a slight smile. Being married to Devan, one of the granddaughters of Lady Williams, he was accustomed to being the odd one out. His lack of business connections and unknown background made him a subject of mockery in the Williams family for years. When Master Williams, the founder of the Walton Company, brought him to Manhattan, he had hoped that he would get along with every member of the Williams Company but they turned out to be exactly what the public had said. They looked down on people that weren’t of their status and they made it clear to him that he wasn’t a part of their world and would never be.
Unknown to the members of the Williams family. Warren and Master Williams met in Brooklyn during one of the Late Veteran businessmen’s meetings with another company. Master Williams knew of his true identity before he passed away.
Warren moved to Manhattan because he got tired of the way his father was being controlled by his mistress constantly. His father’s mistress was able to manipulate him into making her a co-owner of the family company and was secretly divulging money from the company’s finances, but his father refused to believe him and sent him out of the family house. Warren’s father also owned a highly influential and wealthy company in Brooklyn, The Sterling Heights Company.
Taking Warren with him to Manhattan with Warren’s consent, Master Williams decided not to reveal Warren’s identity to his family until an appointed time, teaching him more things about running a business and owning a corporation. Two years after Warren was brought into the Williams family, on the instruction of Master Williams, he married Devan Williams to the dismay of her parents and her cousins who thought of Warren as a nobody and felt he was only here to take shares from the company. Master Williams passed away without telling his family about Warren’s true identity, leaving them to think of Warren as someone of a low social class.
Warren on the other hand, made up his mind that he was no longer a part of his father’s family as long as his father’s mistress was still co-owner of Sterling Heights company and since his father made it clear that he wanted nothing to do with him anymore.
Warren’s thoughts are interrupted by the mock clap of someone approaching him. Troy and Laurel Williams are Devan’s cousins. He clenched his hands and tried so hard not to go off in another direction.
“Well, well, well. Look who we have here. The famous son-in-law of the Williams family,” Troy said with a mocking tone. Warren decided to ignore him. This wasn’t the first time Troy was talking down on him. Everyone in the Williams family, including his wife, looked down on him because they all thought he was a nobody. Well, he was; after all, he had no family. He dropped the wine glass and tried to walk away but Laurel stopped him.
“Are you leaving already, brother-in-law? The party just begun,” Laurel said with a sick, sweetening smile, and Troy snorted.
“How does it feel to be amid New York elite businessmen? I’m pretty sure you never thought it would happen, right?” She asked again.
“Of course, I am happy to be here,” Warren replied, his smile tight. Among all family members of the Williams family, Troy, Laurel and Kara made it obvious that what they had for him was seething hatred. He had no idea why. He tried his best to stay out of their way but it seemed to make matters worse even.
“I still don’t know what Devan sees in you; there are so many elites in Manhattan. I don’t know why she had to settle for you,” Troy mused, his eyes filled with disdain and Laurel laughed.
“Come on, let’s head back to the party. Our guests and friends are waiting for us” Laurel said and dragged Troy's hand slowly for him to follow her.
Warren gritted his teeth, he was furious. He didn’t want to attend the party in the first place but Devan asked him to. He scanned the hall, trying to spot Devan and he finally saw her walking towards his direction, dressed in a red designer gown.
“What were my cousins saying to you this time?” She asked with an expression on her face that Warren couldn’t decipher. Was it a concern or worry? She had never been concerned about him; she didn’t talk down on him, but she didn’t say anything when the others did either. Warren tried to take his mind off the short conversation he had with her cousins and gave her what he hoped was a genuine smile.
“Nothing you should worry about. I’m a bit tired and I will head back to the house now,” he replied her, grabbing his jacket and bidding her goodbye.
Chapter 2A few days after the grand party at the family Villa, the Williams family gathered around the breakfast table; they were engaged in a business discussion on how to go about their next contract. Warren was present beside Devan and he did his best to make sure his presence was not noticed. This was not successful as Troy, who always found delight in making Warren a subject of mockery, found an opportunity to strike.“Warren, wouldn’t you like to contribute to the discussion? We would love to hear your brilliant ideas,” he said sarcastically, earning a chorus of loud laughter from the table. Warren did what he always felt was best; ignore Troy.Lady Williams intervened with a clear look of annoyance on her face“Troy, that's enough. We are discussing important matters here, not trivial issues,” she remarked, and Warren understood quite well what she meant. He was used to Lady Williams making statements that indirectly said a lot about her dislike for him.Nevertheless, he seiz
Chapter 3Devan Williams sat behind the magnificent mahogany office desk with a large file in her hands. Ever since she got promoted to a higher position in the Walton company by Lady Williams, her grandma, her work multiplied but she didn’t mind. The harder she worked at the company, the higher the chance of her getting a larger share of the inheritance, so she couldn’t afford to slack. She glanced at the wall clock across her office, and it was a few minutes past noon. Her secretary had come earlier to tell her about her schedule for today and the first was her meeting with the Director of Russell corporation, Logan Smith, the only son of the owner of the Russell corporation and the heir as well.It was no news that Logan was attracted to her; she felt the same way also, and she always thought they were going to get married until Warren pushed his way into the Williams family. When Grandpa came home with Warren, she never guessed that he was going to tell her to marry him. In fact,
Chapter 4 Warren’s gaze was on the neatly trimmed lawn in front of the cafe’s window, with an empty coffee mug in his hand. His mind drifted back to the call he had with Lady Williams this morning concerning the job request, and as usual, she gave excuses. He was already on the verge of giving up and looking for a job somewhere else. He placed a rumpled dollar note on the table as his bill and left the table. As he was about to walk out of the cafe, his phone suddenly rang out. Warren took his phone out of his pocket and saw that it was a private number. His curiosity got the better of him as he placed the phone to his ear after accepting the call.“Good day, Mr Warren,” the person on the other end of the call said politely.Warren couldn’t help his suspicion. Mr Warren? When last was he addressed that way? What could this person want?“Yes, I am Warren. Who are you?” He asked.“My sincere apologies for interrupting your day but I am calling on behalf of your father. He has been hosp
CHAPTER FIVELater that day, while the family were having dinner, discussions about the company were going on, and as usual, Warren was left out. This time, he barely minded. He had more pressing matters to deliberate on. He had already made up his mind to accept the offer but he was torn between telling the family to see their reaction or just taking them by surprise.“Warren!” he heard Emily shout, jolting him out of his reverie.“Yes, Emily?” he replied in a questioning tone, wondering why his attention was needed. He was absolutely certain that they wanted to mock him again and he was right.“Brother-in-law, what were you thinking about that you couldn't hear Lady Williams speaking to you? Do you have a company you're running?” she asked and the whole table laughed including Devan and Lady Williams. “How ironic?” Warren thought to himself, chuckling in the process, shocking everyone else.“Why are you laughing Warren? You also agree that you can never reach that position, right?”
CHAPTER SIXWarren barely had any sleep because thinking about his trip back to Brooklyn. He’d finally see his father after a very long while. Even if he didn't like the way his father treated him, he sure did miss the times they shared before his mistress came into the picture. As early as seven in the morning, he was up and ready. Although he was still tired owing to the fact that he slept by 3am, he was ready on time. It was probably anxiety working through him because at intervals his hands become sweaty and he had to constantly wipe his hands on his trousers. The taxi was to arrive by 7:45 but by 7:36, it was already waiting for him downstairs. He had already taken all of his luggage to the taxi and had just his briefcase to get when he bumped into Devan.“Would you watch it! I nearly twisted my ankle,” she said seethingly.“I’m sorry, I was kind of in a rush. I didn’t mean to bump into you that way.”Warren said, making a move to check if she had sprained the ankle or something.
CHAPTER SEVENAfter hours of deliberation and mental preparation, Warren finally decided to visit home after three days of being in Brooklyn. He called Xavier to tell him of his plans and within minutes, Xaiver was there with a car to take him.Warren’s anxiety shot up. Turned out no amount of preparation helped in preparing him to see the person that neglected him.Getting to the Easton mansion, Warren almost told them to turn the car around but he had already made up his mind to face his father. He stayed in the car for about fifteen minutes before Xavier brought him out of his reverie.“Sir, it's totally fine if you are not ready to see him. We can go back to the condo,” Xavier said.“No,no,no, I’m ready. I was jus–” Warren paused, remembering something.“You know what? Never mind. Let’s go. I'll have to meet him sooner or later so why prolong. Besides, the sooner we discuss the company’s situation, the better for all of us,” Warren said.Along with working on reforming Sterling He
CHAPTER EIGHT The next day, Warren made his way to Sterling Heights. The drive to the company was short. Beside him was Xavier, who was giving him the important details of the company, ranging from the list of stakeholders and board of directors to notable business partners down to chief of staff. In no time, they had gotten to Sterling Heights. Stepping out of the car, Warren looked up the magnificent twenty story building that housed Sterling Heights. As soon as he stepped into the building, heads were turning and people began to whisper among themselves. The receptionist looked like she had seen a ghost. She kept staring before Xavier cleared his throat.“Go… Goo… Good morning sir. Nice to see you again,” the receptionist, Sheila said, still reeling from the shock of Warren’s arrival.“Good morning…” Warren paused, trying to remember her name. “Sheila,” he said smiling after he finally remembered her name. Once they got into the elevator, all eyes were on him. People who wanted
CHAPTER 9SIX MONTHS LATERThe atmosphere in the boardroom was tense. Warren’s method hadn't worked. Everyone had a worried look on their faces. If word got out, Sterling Heights won't be able to face the shame.Sam, on the other hand, was ecstatic to watch Warren’s downfall. He hadn't forgotten how Warren disgraced him and his mother in front of the board. He was ready to do the same and more to Warren.Warren entered the boardroom, calm as ever. Immediately he entered, he was bombarded with a lot of questions.“Mr. Warren, what do we do now? It seems your technique has failed.”“Sir, is the company ever going to recover from this blow?”These were a few of the questions he was asked.“You have put the company in jeopardy! We could have just gone with my idea. Now, look at what we are all going through because of you!” Sam said.Warren relaxes on his chair and smiles.“He did say six months was all he needed. I say we remove him this instant and reinstate me as the CEO,” Sam continue
