Fanning the Flames

Victor and Emma left Lady Irene’s estate, the air between them charged with unspoken tension. The deal had been sealed, but the friction caused by Lady Irene’s bold flirtation and Emma’s simmering jealousy lingered like an open wound. Neither spoke as they climbed into the car that awaited them outside, the silence thick and oppressive.

As the car pulled away from the estate, Victor finally broke the silence.

“You handled that well,” he said, keeping his voice measured. “You saved us from giving up more than we could afford.”

Emma turned her head slightly, her eyes fixed out the window. “I didn’t do it for praise,” she said coolly.

Victor sighed, sensing the storm brewing beneath her calm demeanor. “Emma, what’s this really about?”

She glanced at him, her eyes sharp. “What do you think it’s about, Victor? Lady Irene was practically all over you, and you just stood there. You didn’t push back. You didn’t even seem bothered.”
