The shrill sound of Lloyd’s phone pierced the stillness of early morning, dragging him abruptly from the warm depths of sleep.

His hand shot out from beneath the sheets, fumbling blindly on the nightstand before it found the device.

He glanced at the screen...an unregistered number, causing him to scowl.

He knew who this probably was, but he wasn't really in the mood to deal with it

The glow from the phone lit up the sleeping face of Lisa, her chest rising and falling in soft, measured breaths.

She didn’t stir, but the sound had been close. Too close.

Without hesitation, Lloyd rejected the call. The last thing he wanted was to disturb her rest.

He leaned down and kissed her gently on the forehead before slipping out of bed.

Dressing in silence, he began his morning workout, using the private gym in the family basement . The space had been converted months ago into a minimalist gym with nothing but a yoga mat, resistance bands, a pull-up bar, and his own mental discipline.

Lloyd’s grip on the phone tightened. Mason’s words rang in his ears like the echo of a gunshot...final, cold, and ominous. He stood by the window, the early sunlight casting long shadows over the carpet as his mind parsed through the implication. He truly hoped that no one would see him, as he was sure this call was about to get even more intense. "What do you mean by that, Uncle?" Lloyd asked slowly. His voice dropped into a measured tone "What did you mean when you said it’s too late for Lisa to not be involved?" There was a heavy sigh on the other end. "It’s not something I can explain over the phone" Mason replied, realizing that their conversation wasn't too safe over the phone "You and I... we need to talk, face to face... There’s a lot you need to hear" Lloyd’s eyes narrowed. "Is this about the Capital M gang? Has your investigation yielded anything useful?" There was a pause, then Mason’s voice lowered. "It has, more than you’d expect... that’s why we n

Lloyd stared across the table, his eyes locked onto Mason’s as the words echoed in his mind.“How’d you like to be mayor?”It felt like a slap... Almost too unbelievable to even hear Mason say it.Lloyd’s breath caught for half a second. He leaned back, eyes narrowed, unsure if Mason was joking. But Mason wasn’t laughing.Lloyd blinked... "You can’t be serious"Mason didn’t answer, he just raised an eyebrow, as if offended that Lloyd wasn't taking him seriously."You’re serious?" Lloyd pressed, incredulity rising "You actually want me to run for mayor?""Why not you?" Mason said calmly, sipping from his glass "You’ve got the brains, you're a very Persistent man, you've got the spunk, and I believe that you can very convincing when you decide to say more than one sentence"Lloyd shook his head firmly "I don’t care about Hilburg’s politics... I never have, all I want is to finish what I started... to root out the ones who killed our family, that’s it"Lloyd then gave his uncle an even s

Lloyd stared at Mason for a long moment, his brow furrowed, fingers lightly drumming against the surface of the table."Why?" he asked "Why are you asking me for trust now?"Mason exhaled slowly, the weight of the question settling between them like the thick air before a storm."Let’s not pretend, Lloyd, you’ve been skeptical of me ever since we met again at the mall... I know it, you’ve always had your suspicions"Lloyd leaned back in his chair, folding his arms across his chest. The lighting of the restaurant cast half his face in shadow, the other glinting under a warm amber hue, His voice was low, but firm as he knew he just had to speak his mind now"Can you blame me?"Mason sighed, he really couldn't blame his nephew, not really. You’ve been acting shady ever since you showed up again... keeping secrets, feeding me just enough information to keep me interested, never the whole story, it’s like I’m always two steps behind whatever scheme you’re plotting"Mason didn’t look offend

The clock on the wall ticked steadily, each second tapping into Lloyd’s nerves like a drumbeat. He stood near the hallway mirror, adjusting the collar of his charcoal-grey dress shirt and straightening the cuffs of his tailored jacket. The fabric clung just right across his shoulders, structured and sharp. From the bathroom, Lisa’s voice called out, slightly muffled through the door "I’m so sorry, dear! I swear I’ll just be a few more minutes!"Lloyd smiled faintly, his arms folding across his chest "Take your time. We’re early"She responded with a laugh "You always say that when I’m running late"This was true, Lloyd always tried his best to protect Lisa's feelings, but he was indeed frustrated by how long it took her to get ready, no matter the situation.Lloyd couldn't complain though, if it made her happy that's all that was good for him, plus he was nothing if not a patient man, and if patience was what it took for Lisa to bring out the full extent of her external beauty, then

Lloyd’s expression hardened the moment the door swung open to reveal Mason standing on the threshold, his arms crossed casually, a smug grin playing at the corner of his mouth."Why do you look so surprised, kid?" Mason asked, leaning against the doorframe "You didn’t think I’d miss a meeting I arranged, did you?"Before Lloyd could respond, Lisa stepped forward beside him, her brows raised in surprise "Simon? Who’s this?""Simon?, what's this about Si... ?" Mason was about to ask but Lloyd cut him off"Lisa, this is Mason, he's the one that arranged this meeting" Lloyd said to Lisa, while signalling to his uncle to not push the Simon thing.Mason understood, chuckling slightly before he extended his hand gallantly towards Lloyd "I’m Mason... 'Simon's' uncle... you must be Lisa"Lisa’s face lit up instantly "indeed I am", she then glances at Lloyd breifly."Oh! It’s so nice to finally meet someone from Simon’s family! He never talks about any of you""Well, we’re a complicated bunch,

Inside the softly lit campaign trailer, Lisa paced between the couch and the small desk, holding a printed speech in one hand and a pen in the other. Her hair was pulled into a neat bun, and a nervous but determined look danced across her face. Lloyd stood across from her, arms folded, watching her carefully."Alright" she said, stopping mid-step "So the introduction, I start by thanking everyone for coming, acknowledge Eve, and then jump into the reforms we want to see""Not bad" Lloyd said, walking toward her "But maybe consider shifting the gratitude a little, put the emphasis on the people first, they’re the ones who are going to vote for this change"Lisa scribbled a quick note "Okay... people first, got it, what about the part where I talk about Eve’s policy on policing?""That line about 'restoring balance between protection and privacy'...it's good, but it’s vague" Lloyd said "People want clarity, try saying something like, 'We’ll rebuild a system where law enforcement prote

The sun hung high over Hilburg as the rally grounds swelled with people... supporters, curious residents, families, students, blue-collar workers, each one drawn by the same spark of hope. Lisa stood center stage in front of the largest crowd she’d ever addressed. The platform, flanked by city banners and Eve Willis campaign posters, posters that had all integrated her into their imagery, making it clear that the courage Lisa Francis stood with the Underdog candidate, Eve Willis.trembled faintly under her heels, The air buzzed with energy around Lisa.Lloyd stood just behind the stage steps, hands in his coat pockets, scanning the crowd. Beside him stood Mason and Eve, both watching Lisa with a shared sense of satisfaction.Eve leaned in slightly "Two days left, if she lands this rally, we’ve practically won" her voice was incredibly gitth as she, couldn't believe how close she was to becoming the mayor.Lloyd gave a tight nod but said nothing, he completely agreed though. He coul

The heavy smoke from overturned food stands and burning equipment still lingered in the air as Lloyd ducked behind the remnants of the main stage, Lisa’s semi-conscious body cradled against his chest. In his mind was only one single string of thoughts were.."WHERE THE FUCK IS MORTY"He had called him almost 10 minutes ago, and he had promised to order the cops back to the scene, but since then he hadn't seen anything, not a call, not any new police presence, the cops who retreated didn't even return... And even worse than this was the fact that the gun men had been wreaking havoc this entire time, something like 20 people were dead at this point. The only thing that was holding them off were some of the more local security services that Eve was prudent enough to hire, but half of them were already dead, and Lloyd knew it wouldn't be long before all of them were.He pulled out his phone, fingers trembling with rage, and hit Morty’s number for the third time... The atmosphere inside the watch party venue was heavy with anticipation. Every pair of eyes was glued to the mounted television screens that lined the upper corners of the event hall. The final numbers were moments away, and the tension in the room had become so palpable it was almost physical. Drinks were paused halfway to lips, Conversations froze mid-sentence, even the buzzing of phones died down, as everyone was more focused on the screen than even their own well being.Lloyd leaned forward, arms crossed, expression unreadable. Beside him, Ivan stood with a relaxed but attentive stance, while Mason remained perched on a nearby stool, a slow, knowing grin spreading across his face.Ivan hadn't said anything since his arrival at this watch party, and he didn't need to.He believed he didn't really have much to say compared to the conversation Lloyd was having with his uncle. But despite his relaxed stance, it was just a ruse for his internal anxiety, as he knew that Eve Willis c

The dull hum of tires on asphalt accompanied the silence inside the sleek black sedan as it cruised through Hilburg’s streets. Ivan kept both hands on the wheel, his eyes fixed on the road, but his mind was clearly as focused as Lloyd’s, who sat quietly in the passenger seat, staring out at the dim orange glow of passing streetlamps. It had been two days since the rally, two days since chaos had engulfed what was meant to be a turning point in Hilburg’s future. Now, the city stood on the cusp of change again. Election night had finally arrived.Lloyd broke the silence. "How far are we from the venue?"Ivan glanced at the GPS "Ten minutes, if traffic holds"It didn't look like traffic want going to hold that much thought, as despite it being almost 8:00 pm, the streets were flooded with cars.It seems like multiple people were either heading to their various election watch parties, or were heading home to watch the election there. This was perhaps the biggest election the city had se
