“You are a fucking disgrace!” Zack’s boss scolds him again a day after the robbing event. “Can’t you even handle a few lowlifes without making a mess of my store!?!”
Zack purses his lips and wishes that his boss’ voice cannot be heard outside. Thankfully, when he came home last night, Celeste was still out and when he left for work, she was still sleeping. Hopefully, that setup will continue until his wounds heal.
“Just one more mistake, and I will fire you!”
Zack nods, checking his emotions, and ensures that he won’t make that mistake very soon.
“For all these damages, I will take them off your salary!”
Zack raises his head at him. He can’t do that! He needs the money for his sisters’ educational needs. That’s the reason he stopped studying. If they deduct every damage that happens in the store from his salary, then he will never earn a dime! Dropping out of college will be useless!
“But sir, my monthly salary cannot even cover for all the damages yesterday.”
“Then I will take it from the next few months!”
He pales. “Please, sir, I don’t think that’s legal—”
“What now?! You think you’re so smart just because you passed that prestigious university’s admission exam?! Let me remind you that you dropped out because you only got lucky during the exam!”
He swallows hard. Celeste, Mason and him are from the same university. They live near it. Celeste is an alumni, Mason is graduating soon, and he’ll stay as a college dropout.
“Look at you,” the manager sneers, his gaze as unforgiving as the harsh fluorescent lights above. “Once a loser, always a loser. Even if you are given a single opportunity in your entire life, you cannot handle it and now you are here.”
Zack clenches his fists as Mr. Thompson’s contemptuous laughter echoes in the cramped space, a stark reminder of how far he has fallen — or perhaps, how little he has ever risen.
He should have been more selfish. He should have focused on his own dreams instead of sacrificing everything for his sisters.
One of his sisters is studying in an unknown college, and another sister is currently in high school but has dreams of studying at the same university that he drops out of. Maybe he shouldn’t have given way to his sisters. Maybe he won’t beg for Celeste’s pity, and he won’t envy Mason’s life.
Zack bows his head in submission as Mr. Thompson’s voice echoes in the small stock room. He feels worthless at every harsh word thrown at him.
“Just fucking leave my sight!” Mr. Thompson screams, his face contorted with anger. “I don’t want to look at your face anymore!”
With a heavy heart and defeated spirit, Zack turns around and walks out of the stockroom. As he steps into the brightly lit store, he can feel eyes on him. He’s been scolded by his boss again, and it seems like everyone in the store knows about it.
He tries to put on a brave face as he makes his way towards the counter where he usually stands, but deep down, he feels more and more of a failure. This isn’t how he imagined his life would turn out after dropping out of college.
“Hey man, what happened there?” Mason asks as soon as Zack reaches the counter.
Zack blinks. He didn’t even notice Mason. Since when is he here? “You heard that?” he asks.
“Well,” he starts, scratching his head. “We all heard that.”
He frowns and then his heart rate skyrockets as his high school crush, Sophia, appears from behind Mason. He can feel the heat rising to his cheeks as she flashes him a dazzling smile.
“Hi, Zack,” she says, her voice sweet and melodic. “It’s been a while.”
“H—hi Sophia,” he stammers as he glares at Mason.
“Sorry, man, I didn’t expect for you to get scolded the instant we come in,” Mason whispers. “She insisted on coming.”
“What happened back there?” Sophia asks, gesturing towards the stock room with her perfectly manicured hand.
He takes a deep breath, trying to keep his emotions in check. “Just another bad day at the job,” he replies nonchalantly.
“Oh,” Sophia says, her brown eyes full of pity. “I’m sorry to hear that.”
Mason clears his throat, breaking the tension. “So Sophia,” he starts, flashing her his signature grin. “Tell my friend, Zack, on the reason you are around the area.”
“My boyfriend will be speaking during the graduation ceremony, so we decided to visit early,” she explains. “You know, to check the campus out.”
“Bo-boyfriend?” Zack manages to stammer out. He feels a pang of disappointment in his chest. He had hoped that maybe, just maybe, she was single and interested in him, too.
“Yes, we’ve been together for almost a year now,” Sophia responds. “So, I’m wondering if you’d like to meet for dinner tonight?” she asks.
“Oh, okay...” he says. “I think… i-it will be n-nice.”
“Great! I will come here at around eight. Be ready then!”
“S-sure.” D-did his crush just ask him for a date?!
“Oh! Since I am here now, let me just get some items that I need.”
As she walks away to look for the items she needs, Mason leans closer and whispers in Zack’s ear, “Don’t tell me you still like the girl?”
Zack rolls his eyes at Mason’s teasing tone. “It’s just a dinner,” he defends. “And I am just being friendly.”
But deep down, he knows that it’s not entirely true. Seeing Sophia again after all these years has stirred up old feelings inside him.
“Oh, really? The way you look at her doesn’t suggest that.”
“Mason, I am just looking at her. She is still pretty.”
“Well, she is part-timing as a model, and her boyfriend is in politics.”
“See? She’s just easy on the eyes.”
“But Zack, she doesn’t deserve it,” Mason whispers again. “The girl’s a cheater, so I’d advise you to say no to a slut like her. She will devour you and throw you away afterward.”
Zack’s mind is in overdrive as he processes Mason’s words. Sophia, the sweet angel, his high school crush… is a cheater and a slut? It’s hard for him to believe it.
“What are you talking about?” Zack asks, his anger flaring up. “I didn’t know that you are fond of rumors!”
Mason lowers his voice even further. “I tell you that she is.”
“That’s not true!”
Mason scratches his head. “Fine, I will show you that I am correct.”
The door of the storeroom opens and Mr. Thompson gets out. “Hey, Zack, I will be back in an hour,” he informs. “Don’t make any mistake again!”Zack nods and watches as Mr. Thompson leaves the store.“Damn, your boss is still so antsy. You should look for a new job.”“As if it’s easy to find a job with my qualifications.”As Sophia makes her way back to the counter with a basket full of items, Zack can’t help but look at her. She really looks perfect, beautiful and curvaceous. Her face is like that of an angel.“Hey guys,” Sophia greets them with a smile as she places the items on the counter. “What are you talking about?”“What do you think of our campus?” Mason asks, trying to steer the conversation away from sensitive topics.“It’s amazing,” Sophia gushes. “The buildings are becoming so modern and the atmosphere feels so alive.”“I’m glad you are enjoying it,” Zack says politely while ringing up her purchases.Mason places his arms on Sophia’s shoulders and invites her to the back of
Zack stands outside the store, still reeling from an encounter with Mason and Sophia. He can’t believe what he just witnessed — his ex-crush openly admitting to cheating on his boyfriend and showing no remorse for it. And Mason, who has already given up on Celeste and is now fucking a cheater and a whore. His mind is racing with questions. How can Mason do this? Is he really that desperate for Celeste’s attention? But as Zack continues to mull over the situation, a loud commotion from inside the storage room snaps him back to reality. He rushes in, only to see a furious Mr. Thompson.“What’s going on?” he asks breathlessly.“You think I won’t find out?!” he yells at Zack. “You think you can get away with this?!”Zack’s heart drops. He looks around frantically, trying to figure out what he is angry about. Did he forget to arrange something? Any missing stocks, perhaps?“What is it?” Zack asks, his voice trembling.Mr. Thompson storms towards him, his face red with fury. “I can’t believe
It is a hot day as Zack lies on his bed and stares at the ceiling, doing and thinking nothing. Suddenly, his phone buzzes. He automatically picks it up, thinking that it’s Mason, and starts the call.“Mason?”“Brother? Zack?” she starts, her voice trembling. It is his sister, Trina.“Hi, Trina, how are you?” he asks.“Zack, thank god! I finally reached you!”He scratches his head. For the past few days, he is not answering any calls from them. He knows what they want — more money. And it is something he doesn’t have. He doesn’t even know how to survive the following weeks. He tried to look for work, but none were asking him to come for an interview.“Zack, are you still there?” she asks.“Yes, I am still here.”“My tuition is due, and if it’s unpaid, I won’t be able to graduate.”His gaze sweeps across his tiny room. What can he even do? He can’t even fend for himself.“The fees are due next week, Zack,” she continues, her voice filled with desperation. “If I don’t pay, I can’t take my
Zack scratches his head as he stares at the emails on the computer that Celeste allows him to borrow. His eyes scan through dozens of rejection emails, each one a punch to his gut. He rubs his temples, trying to ease the tension building up.He glances at his tattered leather wallet and takes another heavy sigh. His phone lights up and he reads the message from Trina. It is the amount of tuition he needs to pay and how to pay it. And now, his situation presses him down further, making it hard to breathe.Feeling defeated, Zack continues to search for job posts, his desperation creeping in. Finally, he comes across an advertisement for an online loan facility. He hesitates for a moment, but then clicks on the link. Maybe this is his last chance to make enough money to pay his tuition and survive until Celeste arrives and he can look for a new job.“Hello, Borrower,” a flashing marquee greets him as the website loads. “We’re here to help you with all your financial needs. What can we do
“I will extend my vacation for a few more weeks.”Zack rereads Celeste’s text message for a hundred times. Since then, days have turned into weeks with no luck in finding a job. He stares at the overdue notice from the loan facility. His money is quickly depleting. He has been trying so hard to find a job, but it seems like every door is closing on him.“I can’t believe I missed the first payment,” he mutters to himself. He begins to feel desperate as he realizes that he won’t be able to pay next month as well, if he won’t get a job soon.He sits on the couch and stares blankly at the TV, trying to distract himself from all his worries. Suddenly, there’s a sound coming from the door. Zack gets up just in time to find Celeste standing there with a big smile on her face.“Hey Zack!” she exclaims, holding up a shopping bag filled with goodies. “I’m back from vacation!”Zack forces a smile. Seeing her again, he feels relieved, but at the same time, he feels annoyed.“That’s great,” he mutt
“Why are you so slow?!” Celeste scolds. She meets him by the door and snatches the bag of groceries that she asked him for. “It’s painful, ugh! I need my pain reliever since an hour ago.”She takes what she needs and leaves him by the door. She moves to the living room, not even noticing the beating he has just endured just because she went away and been very happy while on her vacation! She turns towards him and snaps, “Hurry up with the other groceries, Zack! What are you standing there for?”“I-I’m sorry,” he stammers weakly, trying not to show his pain.Celeste rolls her eyes and shakes her head before returning her attention to the bag.“Do you need anything else?” he asks, trying to sound helpful.“Just my pain reliever… Where is it…” Celeste grumbles as she rummages through the groceries. “And probably some snacks.”“Here you go,” he says, handing her the pain reliever.“Hmm, you’re not as useless as I think you are,” she says and snatches the medicine from him.Zack flinches wh
“What happened to him?” “He was beaten up. Someone saw him in the alley and called for help to get him here.” Zack groans as he blinks and tries to focus on the voices around him. His eyes slowly adjust and he sees two figures standing over him. He immediately recognizes one of them as Celeste. He tries to sit up, but pain shoots through his body and he groans again. “Celeste?” he whimpers. “Are you now ready to tell me what’s happening with you?” she asks, a scolding tone in her voice. He grimaces as memories of the beating flood back into his mind. He winces in pain, trying to sit up again. He was beaten up more than he thought. “You’ve been badly beaten up, Zack. You need to rest,” the male nurse says as he places a hand on Celeste’s shoulders. “Be kind, Celeste. I will leave now, but if you need help, just tell me.“ She nods and when the nurse leaves and closes the door, Zack fears the incoming admonishment. She didn’t speak immediately though, but she moves closer and check
*********** TRIGGER WARNING: Self harm and Suicide. Consider yourself warned. ************ Zack hunches over in the corner of his room in Celeste’s apartment. He returned from the hospital yesterday and he hasn’t left his room since then. He is afraid to come across the loan sharks again. Thankfully, Celeste is too angry to request things from him. He shifts his attention to the window, which is covered in blinds, not allowing any light to flicker inside his room — or Celeste’s room, since she is the one paying for the entire apartment. “Useless,” he whispers in the darkness. He already knows it. He is fucking useless, but Celeste should have been more gentle about it, even if it is true. How can she dismiss his struggles with such callous indifference? He is also her family. Besides, it is also partly her fault, right? And now, he has hurt her, too. He scratches his head and hides his face. He doesn’t want to hurt her like that. He just wanted her to see his worth. That’s all he
