Changes

"What did you just say?" Her harsh voice echoed in the hall as she glared at Evan. Christel stared at her mum with a look of discomfort on her face.

"Mum, you shouldn't be doing this here, please." She said through gritted teeth and her mum turned towards her with a murderous gaze.

"Do not speak," She clenched her teeth tightly then closed her eyes and exhaled lightly.

"As I was saying… You must leave this place. You do not belong here and you shall never be among the noble class. Who knows if the reason you are here is because some old man decided to hire you as his errand boy," She smirked then walked towards Evan with disgust in her eyes.

"I've given you enough time to sign those divorce papers and if you don't sign them." She threatened then backed away, "Who knows if the street can still be your home,"

"Mum!" Christel frowned then flashed an apologetic look at her husband. Her mother had crossed the line and she couldn't stand it anymore but even If she wanted her husband to be free from this situation, how would she persuade the guests who had already taken offense at her mum?

"Mum, you are causing a scene, let's just leave this place. You can talk to him when no one is around, please," She begged but the elderly woman wasn't listening to her. Instead, she kept on yelling that Evan should leave this place and this caused the guest to get angry at Evan.

"Kiddo? Aren't you the one she's talking to? Leave this place before I send the security men to kick your sorry ass from here," A burly man with a long scar on his left eye said, coldly.

"Mr Jones has spoken. What are you still doing here? Aren't you ashamed of yourself? You don't have the money to be here and yet you openly show yourself to us. Don't tell me you want a sugar mummy from this place?" A woman smirked then all the guests burst into a fit of laughter.

Seeing the guests' reaction made Mrs. Bertha, Christel's mum, have this feeling of satisfaction and this skyrocketed her confidence.

She turned towards Evan with an arrogant expression, "Do you want me to show you the way to the door?"

She knew that there was nothing for him to do now and so she just stood there enjoying the show but unexpectedly, his expression didn't change one bit. It was as though he wasn't the one the people were pointing fingers at.

"I was invited by the mayor and only he can tell me whether to leave or stay," Evan calmly replied then went back to his meal.

Mrs. Bertha stared at the indifferent man in front of her and soon burst into a fit of laughter along with the guests in the hall, some even holding their stomachs as tears fell from their eyes.

"What did I hear him say just now? He was invited by the mayor?!" Mr Jones laughed out loud.

"If he was invited by the mayor then the mayor's driver drove me here by himself," A slender woman chuckled lightly and all the guests shook their heads and stared at Evan as though he was sick.

"Goodness, child. Are you so broken internally that you don't have any excuses to clear yourself from this embarrassment you put yourself in? I'll do you the honor and call the security on you," Mrs Bertha mocked him then called the security men who just entered the hall.

"Please take him away from here," She said. The security men nodded, then attempted to drag Elvan out when suddenly…

"What is going on here? And who is causing chaos in this place?" A deep baritone voice pierced through the hall and all the guests suddenly kept quiet and turned towards the place the voice came from.

A tall handsome man with dark curly hair and a sharp gaze walked inside the hall with an oppressive aura around him. He looked around and frowned when he saw how disorderly the hall was.

"No one got a mouth to speak?" He boomed.

"Mayor sir!" Mrs Bertha gasped then quickly walked towards him and paid her greetings.

She stood beside him and then pointed at the calm and indifferent Elvan who wasn't concerned by the mayor's presence and this infuriated the people in the hall.

"I am sorry that you have to witness the scene of that pest being kicked out from the hall. I warned him to leave this place but he refused and instead said that you invited him," She scoffed and then stared at the mayor with a feverish gaze.

"I don't think someone like you can invite such a low life. You have better things to do and would be a fool to have time with that thing over there," She kept on talking and failed to see the burning rage in the mayor's eyes.

Every word that flew out of her mouth ignited the flame in him and this caused him to close his eyes for a while. Mrs Bertha thought he was infuriated by Elvan so she walked up to him and scolded him to leave the hall immediately.

At this time, Claus, the VP of Vertice Capital stared at the mayor and said coldly, "Had I known this was how you would welcome us? We wouldn't have rejected the other company's application. Since we are not welcomed here, I will leave with sir Elvan,"

The mayor's eyes widened in horror when he heard what Claus said and this caused his heart to skip a bit.

'Damn it, you witch! You will never be my downfall. Did you know how much I spent just to get them to agree and invest in this project and now you want to spoil it all for me!' His eyes turned bloodshot as he strode towards Mrs Bertha.

"You!" The mayor yelled angrily as he yanked her shoulder and sent a slap to her face.

Everyone gulped nervously as they watched the elderly fall to the floor and went silent.

"How dare you cause a scene here?!" He yelled angrily. Mrs Bertha went calm for a while then slowly looked up at him with a swollen chick.

"Did I do something wrong? I am sorry if I caused a scene. I only wanted this young man out of this place," She quickly apologized as she felt like she wouldn't have the chance to have business deals with Vertice Capital.

She tried to beg the mayor but the man didn't spare a glance at her. She glanced at the guests who enjoyed the fun with her and flashed a pleading look at them but they all looked away as though they knew nothing of what she meant.

'Damn it!' She cursed angrily and flashed a cold look at Evan.

"You did this! Do not think this is over. I'll make sure you pay and come back crawling to me for forgiveness," She said with deep hatred in her heart then got off the floor and walked out of the hall with shame. She wasn't going to apologize to that low life if the mayor wouldn't accept her…she would find her ways to get in touch with the founder of Vertice Capital.

Christel walked past Evan and then said, "I am sorry,"

Elvan didn't say a word and as such she left with a sad look on her face. All the guests in the hall couldn't help but have a wild guess.

'Why didn't the mayor yell at the young man after the woman left?' They thought.

"I am so sorry that you have to experience that," The mayor sighed heavily and everyone's eyes widened in shock.

'Did the mayor just apologize to that young man?'

"Who is he?" One of them gasped in shock.

"Don't tell me it's what I am thinking," Mr Jones gulped nervously and all of them couldn't help but bite their tongue in regret.

'We are doomed!'

"Damn it! I'll make sure he pays dearly for this shame he puts on me today!" Mrs Bertha cursed angrily from the driver's seat. She pressed the honk harshly at the motor ahead and gritted her teeth.

"Why didn't the mayor yell at him? Why did he keep quiet? Or is it because Elvan has a relationship with Vertice Capital? No, that can't be. Maybe he's just the boss' driver." She muttered then shook her head and paid close attention to the road.

Christel stared at her mum but didn't say a word, instead, she looked outside the car and to the cloudless sky.

'He has changed a lot. He isn't like the man I married a year ago,' She thought then closed her eyes.
