Chapter 4

Jasper stared piercingly at the man before him. He was trying to process what Sabastian had said to him. How could he be his father. It was so improbable and yet Jasper believed what he said. And apparently, he had a mate as well. “Please forgive me, but did you say that I am your son?” Sabastian looked at Jasper with pride in his eyes. “Yes. I am not sure why you do not remember me, but I promise you once you come back and see the pack you will remember.”

Jasper went willingly with Sabastian to his wolf packs den. It was about ten miles up the mountainside. As soon as the two of them were through the trees and out of sight of prying eyes Sabastian changed into his wolf form. He looked at Jasper expectingly. He did not know how to change on cue, at least he thought. He closed his eyes and imagined himself transforming and just like that his body changed with little effort.

The two of them started running up the mountainside with Sabastian taking the lead. Jasper was deep in thought about where he had come from. If what Sabastian says is true, after all this time of being alone he will finally be part of a family. He wondered if like him that these people changed like him or did he start off as a wolf and somehow his genetic makeup got changed. He needed answers. He was tired of not knowing and he was growing more anxious with every passing step.

When they finally made it to the wolves’ den Jasper slowed to a trot taking in his surroundings. They were in some type of cave. The walls sparkled with blue and yellow gems and the ceiling hung with spikey rocks they gave off the appearance of teeth. There were more than a dozen people and wolves surrounding the surface of the cave talking and eating in a harmonious way. Then Jasper saw her. The beautiful woman from the ancient tome.

As he looked at her memories of the two of them came swarming back at a rapid pace. “Sylvia” he thought. This was the woman he was mated to. After all these years of never being able to recover any of his lost memories one look at her and his younger years came rushing back. He had more questions than answers. What caused him to leave her? Why would he turn his back on his pack? And most importantly what changed him into the being he was today?

A dark red light encircled Sabastian as he turned back into his human form. He then walked over to a stack of clothes in a corner of the cave and put some on. Then he turned to his people and said, “All of you must turn back into a human right this moment. Come on as quick as you can do not keep your Alfa waiting!” Jasper chose to stay in his wolf form for the time being. He was not ready for them to see who he was. Unlike Sylvia, he had not remembered anyone else. That still included his father Sabastian.

After the pack transformed, they all circled around the fire that was burning while Sabastian stood at the front facing them all. Jasper waited where he was watching to see what the Alfa had to say. “My people. Today is a glorious one for my only son has returned to us. Jasper, please change back so we can welcome you home!” The pack began whispering excitedly as Sylvia stared harshly at Jasper. Jasper closed his auburn eyes and changed back. He stood there for a few moments waiting for the pack to take his face in.

They all gasped when they saw that it was truly him. Instead of looking happy Sylvia growled and stormed over to him. Jasper tried to open his mouth and explain, but he could not. Any time he tried to tell anyone about what happened to him it was like a strange force preventing him from doing so. Once Sylvia was in front of Jasper, she looked deep into his eyes. With a hurt look in her eyes, she slapped Jasper across the face with all the strength she had.

“Jasper Monroe! How dare you show your face around here again!” Sylvia spat out angrily. “That is enough Sylvia. He is your mate, and you will show him some respect.” Sabastian said in his deep Alfa voice. Sylvia looked down at her feet. “Yes Alfa. Sorry Jasper. I lost control of myself please forgive me.”

Though Jasper did not know what drove him away from his pack he knew her anger was justified. “Do not be sorry Sylvia. I am the one in the wrong. I can not tell you where I have been or why I left for I do not know myself. Until I walked in here and saw you, I did not remember you. It is not you who needs forgiveness but me!”

For the next few hours, the pack bombarded Jasper with question after question. Most of them he had no answers for. Then Sabastian said that it was time to run as a pack to officially welcome Jasper back into the fold. Once they were all wolves once again, they exited the cave and began running. They had no need to run together. All of their minds were linked together. At first Jasper could not hear any of them but as they ran, he started hearing them one after the other.

It was a very strange sensation, It was less like words and more like feeling what they felt. As Jasper was running along, he noticed a man next to a mountain wall. He slowed to a stop so he could observe him further. The man was tracing his finger on the wall when he stopped the spot where he traced was glowing. It was the same spiral symbol that he bore on his arm. Another piece of the puzzle to solve.
