Chapter 5

Jasper stood in the shadows of the trees observing the man before him. The strange symbol grew brighter before burning out completely. A few moments later the mountain wall began to shift ever so slightly. You would miss it if you were not looking directly at it. It made no sound, but it let off a kind of shimmer.

The man took a few steps backwards as the wall began opening revealing a doorway in its place. The man entered as the opening started to close behind him. Jasper took off running as fast as his legs would carry him, yet it was no use. The mountain wall had sealed up back to its original form.

Frustrated Jasper howled deep and loud, alerting the others in the pack to his distress. He had to calm himself down. He closed his eyes tightly and swiftly changed forms. He wondered to himself if all werewolves could change on demand and with such ease like his pack could. Or maybe it was just him. He pushed the thought away, a question for a different day.

A few moments later Sabastian followed by Sylvia approached Jasper. They too quickly shifted back to humans. “My love what is the matter?” Sylvia asked Jasper with deep concern. He took a deep breath and said, “I have been searching for answers to why I am the way I am. A man was just here, and he had traced a symbol onto the mountain wall over there. The same symbol that is here on my left forearm. The mountain opened and he disappeared into it.”

Sabastian and Sylvia exchanged a look of confusion. “Son what you say is physically impossible. Mountains cannot move and they certainly do not have secret passageways. Are you feeling okay my boy?” Jasper decided to let it go. He knew that no matter how he explained it, it would sound crazy. He would just have to stay here until the man returned. “I am fine I am just going to sit down here for a while it has been a long day. You can head back to the cave I will be there shortly.” They did not want to leave him alone. He had been missing for so long and they were afraid he would disappear again.

But alas they did what he had asked. They knew if they pushed him to hard, he may shut them out further and they did not want that. They wanted to know where he had been and since Jasper claimed he did not know they would do everything in their power to help him. Sylvia kissed Jasper on the cheek. “Do not keep me waiting long my love. We have a lot of things to catch up on.” She passionately said to him before switching back to her wolf form and running off. Sabastian gave his son one last look before following Sylvia.

Jasper waited in that spot for well over an hour. The air around him was turning icy and it was getting harder for him to bear it. Just when he was about to give up and head back to his pack the wall began to shimmer once more. The same man who entered early returned along with another man. Jasper did not waste any time and he walked out of the shadows. Both men were startled that someone was out this far in the mountain.

“Who are you? That symbol you used to open the mountain, is the same one I have on me. Please I beg of you what does it mean?” The two men exchanged a worried look before one of them said, “If you have that mark on you than you are part of the Order of the Supernatural as are we.” The man pulled the sleeve of his robe up showing that he had the same mark. Jasper was ecstatic that he was finally getting answers after all this time.

“What is the orders purpose, and why can I not remember being part of it.” The man said sadly, “I am sorry I cannot give you the answers you seek. You must find the answers yourself that is the only way to get your memories back and to be able to reenter the order.” Jasper was even more frustrated now. If these men could not help him than he was back at square one. “Let me give you a piece of advice. You were born again here so I believe the leader of the order is ready for you to find answers. Keep your eyes and ears open and you will find what you desire.” Jasper thanked him and headed back to his pack.

Upon entering the cave, he found that only Sylvia had arrived back from the run. She smiled at him and pulled him into her arms. “I am so happy you are back. I never gave up hope that you were out there somewhere. I could feel it in the pit of my stomach. Over the years my parents and some of the other members of the pack tried to convince me to move on but there is only one wolf for me.” Jasper leaned down and kissed Sylvia. There was so much heat between them it felt like nothing else he had ever experienced. Maybe the answers he seeks lay within her. Why else would she be the only one he could remember!

They sat there talking for the next few hours not even noticing when the rest of the pack started trickling in. Jasper learned a bit about his past. He met Sylvia when they were just cubs of maybe five or six. They had been inseparable from that first day. His mother had died given birth to him a fact that he now would hold against himself for all of his days.

Sylvia explained to him that their pack was different than others of their kind. A normal werewolf only lived as long as most humans do. They however could live for centuries. The oldest wolf she knew of was the old Alfa, Jasper’s grandfather. He had died around seventy years ago at the ripe old age of three thousand sixty-two. Jasper had asked her if any of the wolves had died and come back to life. She laughed and said, “Don’t be silly. Once you die you die there is no way to be reborn.” If only that were true, he thought to himself.

He wished he could tell her about what happens to him. Maybe than some of the hurt he had caused her from his absence over the years would be erased. He tried once again to tell her, but his attempt was in vain. There was no getting around this invisible force that kept the words in his throat. After awhile Sylvia had fallen asleep on his chest and he shortly dozed off himself.

The two of them had only been asleep for a couple of hours when they were awoken by growls coming from outside the cave. They quickly got up and went outside. There were three wolves from a different pack fighting with Sabastian. There teeth gnashing together and foam coming from their mouths. As soon as they saw Jasper one of the wolves transformed into a human. “Jasper Monroe! So, it is true you have returned. That was a big mistake. I warned you if I ever saw you again, I would tear you into pieces!”

Jasper raised his hands in front of his chest and said, “Take it easy. What is this all about? I am sorry but I do not recognize you. I suffer from some type of amnesia and other than my mate, I do not know anyone!” The man growled hard and deep. “Lies. You would say anything to get out of a fight with me. Last time you came up against me you ran away with your tail between your legs. This time however will be different. There will be no running away there will only be death. One of us will not be walking away from here today. Do not interfere my brothers, Jasper is mine and mine alone!”

Jasper did not want to except this man’s challenge, but he knew there was no choice. He closed his eyes and made his change into his wolf. Sabastian and the other two wolves backed away to give them space to fight. Jasper bent low to the ground before he pounced his mouth wide open aiming for the other wolfs throat!
