Chapter 3

I did it for my grandson.

Zachary's heart skipped for a bit as he exited the restaurant in a haste leaving the other workers flabbergasted. He would have the manager to contend with as he did not inform him before leaving. As he stepped out to hail a cab, a Hyundai car pulled over before him and the occupants was none other than Emily and Duncan.

The seems to be like glue, always sticking together.

Stepping down from the car, Emily approached Zachary who walked away to hail a cab but unfortunately for him, no vehicles were stopping for him.

Fate seems to be against him today.

First, his father had been rushed to the hospital, now it was Emily before him and no cab was stopping for him to get away from her taunts.

Pretending not to notice her, Emily got to where he was to insult him as usual with Duncan following behind.

"Look who we bumped into Duncan, Same old Zach. Still poor and wretched." Emily scoffed and Duncan responded with a mocking smile.

Zachary just stared at them indifferently. Five years had already passed and these two would take every slightest chance to insult him.

'If he would ever get the opportunity to be in a better position, these two would especially face his wrath.' Zachary thought to himself.

"I feel sick each time I see your face Zach and just wish to stop bumping into a loser like you."

"Yeah." Duncan replied. "I think we should not waste any of our time with this lowlife. He is so broke that even his shoes are begging for a change." They both looked down on Zachary's old shoes and laughed scornfully.

Going back to their car, Emily threw a five dollar note at him and zoomed off her car.

It was when his oppressors left that he was able to get a taxi. Heaving a sigh, he quickly boarded the cab for St. Michael's emergency care.

***

At St. Michael's emergency care, an old man was sitting at the reception. He seemed to be waiting for someone. Staring at his wrist watch, he stood up and paced around. There were some mean looking men in black who stood at different angles in the hospital and everyone was wondering who they were.

On sighting a young man approaching the reception, they assumed he was the person they had been waiting for but needed confirmation first.

Zachary soon reached the reception. Meeting the nurse in charge, Zachary inquired.

"Hello Nurse, My grandfather was rushed in here earlier. May I know where I can find her?"

"Please may I know what his name is?" The nurse asked, going through some files.

"Nathan Gabriel. I'm Zachary Gabriel, his grandson."

The old man suddenly approached Zachary on overhearing the discussion with the nurse.

"Zachary Gabriel?"

Zachary heard an old man call out to him. He wondered how the man was able to know his name.

"I'm Zachary Sir, but who are you and how did you know my name?"

The old man smiled at the inquisitive young man.

"My name is Kelvin Paddington, I called you earlier to inform you about your grandfather."

Zachary's face brightened up in appreciation. " Thank you so much for your help Sir. I really appreciate."

"Come with me."

Kelvin took Zachary to the room where his grandfather was admitted.

Lying on the hospital bed, Nathan looked so weak. He had been booked for an operation, so all Zachary had to do was to sign the consent form.

Kelvin came just in time to pay for the surgery.

Zachary shot a gloomy face towards his ailing father. He sat beside him taking his hands into his.

He opened his mouth to speak, but didn't know what to actually say. He was so weak and helpless. His grandfather had done everything he could to take care of him. Now that it was Zachary's turn to care for his grandfather, he seemed to be helpless without money.

"I'm so sorry Grandpa, I've not been able to get the money for your surgery." He said in a frustrated tone, with his face bowing.

Nathan reached for his face and lifted it up with a smile.

"You don't have to worry about that son."

Nathan directed his gaze towards Kelvin and said. " Mr. Paddington here has sorted out the bill."

Standing close to the door, Kelvin watched the emotional moment between a grandfather and his grandson. He admired their relationship.

'If only he could be this close to his son.' He thought.

Turning towards the man standing at the door, Zachary fell to floor in appreciation.

"Thank you Sir."

Kelvin smiled and helped him up. "You don't have to thank me. I did it for my Grandson."

"Grandson?"

Zachary narrowed his gaze and his mouth fell apart in astonishment.

"Your Grandson, what do you mean by that Sir?" He gave both Kelvin and his grandfather a puzzled look and they both smiled to his confused state.

Nathan looked at Kelvin and nodded his head. He wanted Kelvin to explain things to Zachary.

Although, knowing the kind of grandson Zachary was, he has a lot of explaining to do to him after the surgery. That if he would survive it.

Going closer to meet Zachary, Kelvin placed his hands on his shoulders and said.

"It's a long story, son. But for now, let's focus on your grandfather's Surgery.

Zachary was without a word.

He stared intently at the man in disbelief. 'There was no way that this man would be his grandfather.' He thought.

He was now making sense out of everything.

'Paddington.' The name sounded so familiar. He was in a state of dilemma when Kelvin first told him his name. He did not really pay much attention or try to figure out where he had heard that name before.

Now it was clearer to him, the man is the richest man in Texas. And if this man was indeed his grandfather, he was definitely rich.

The thought made him smile inwardly.

Emily, her father and Duncan won't make mockery of him anymore now that he has realized how wealthy his grandfather is.

'They better brace themselves up for what's coming to them. Especially if they work in one of his grandfather's companies.' Zachary thought.

Even though he was a bit angry that he had to go through so much pain and suffering in his life when grandfather was this wealthy. Nevertheless, he was yet to hear the full story.

"Who would be signing the consent form for Mr. Nathan Gabriel. We are about to commence the Surgery.'' A female voice brought him out of his reverie.

Zachary stepped forward and placed his signature on the form.

Being whisked away to the theater, Zachary stared at his grandfather with a mixed feeling.
