“Excellent meal, Lut. Might be the best chicken and chips in the entire city. You weren't joking around when you said that, you know.”

Lutenant nodded. He had expected that. He didn't need people to confirm that Gus had done a good job. From the first day he had tasted Déjà Vu’s chicken and chips, he had discovered why they had such loyal customers.

And he had come to the realization that investing in the business wasn't going to be a waste of finances in any way.

When his father walked up to him, he was all smiles.

“You know, I never expected this. Looks as though the place is going to be a success. It's a hit already. I always believed in you, but I never knew that you knew how to kickstart a business and also make it look this good. That message about the city's monarch was one of a kind.”

Lut nodded, speaking slowly, selecting his words. He didn't want to sound too proud, even though inside of him he was about to burst open.

Hank was the bigger of the two men, and he looked more fashionable. He had a mustache that stood out, and his shoes were of the latest European leather. “Yes, you're quite right, Hank. Good to meet you, Lut. I am Howard, and this is my brother. Forgive his western manners. I might pat you on the back as well, but when I'm overly excited.” While Hank was the bigger of the two, Howard looked like the hard worker. He dressed moderately, and went straight to the point. “Now, Howdy? What are your qualifications? I'd like you to work for me, Lut. You've done a very magnificent job here, only a few youngsters can attempt that and really go ahead to do it.” Lut stole a glance at his father, remembering his advice. He hadn't forgotten. He could get a thousand job offers ,but he always had to remember that he worked for one man, and that was the man that had made him what he was at the moment, and had introduced him to the men before him.

“Natalie? What do you want? I'm busy now and I don't think I'll be able to have a conversation. What do you want?”The last thing Aurora wanted was another confrontation with her best friend. She wasn't only drained, she was tired. Physically and mentally. When it came to Natalie, if you weren't pleasing her, then you weren't pleasing yourself. She did that to you. She made you regret choking another place for lunch if it wasn't the place she selected. She made you get angry with yourself for picking out another meal if it wasn't what she preferred. That was her best friend in a nutshell, and she was tired of that version of Natalie.“This is me calling to tell you that you should go and do whatever you wish with your house. I'll never need your help ever again. Carl just bought me this house, and you need to see how beautiful it looks. Better than that dump that you stay in….”Aurora rolled her eyes. She wanted to celebrate with her team over the success of Déjà Vu, the fact that it

“Just giving you the little gems of the business world. Not everyone is your friend. Not everyone wants you to succeed. You need to know that if you want to go lengths here. Treat everyone as an enemy.”Lut stared at him, shocked. Treat everyone as an enemy? That wasn't his policy. It wasn't even in his plan. To Lutenant James, there was love in sharing. There was kindness in leadership. When your team and the people around you saw your kindness and your sternness, they knew you better. There was no way he was going to treat everyone as his enemy on his way to the top.“Well, I'm not sure my father did that. Most people I've met and who have had things to say about him have said nothing more than how kind he is.”“Your father is a different man entirely. He's one of the strongest men I know…”Lut smiled. He was already tired of the conversation.“I'm as strong as he is, director. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to meet Mr Osman, the CEO of Osman building company. You remember him, ri

His father grinned in reply. “We aren't going far. Come on.” “Is director Edward not coming?” Lut asked as he slipped into the cool interior of the car, then slipped on his gloves, whilst watching director Edward who stood at a single place, watching the car as it drove out of the premises. “Nope. He's going to be my representative. In case anyone needs me.” The driver who was at the wheel stared at the rearview mirror, his eyes asking questions. “To Chain Chain consortium.” Lut raised another eyebrow. The company was just a short distance from Déjà vu, and he wondered what his father wanted to show him that couldn't wait until after the party. The driver nodded, changing gears, and putting his foot down on the accelerator. “This is the beginning, son. You're going to be bigger than me, I can feel it. You being in the midst of those men, I didn't see an uneasy young man, but a man who is willing to lea

“Can't believe I have just gotten a job offer from the Seahawks!” It was Clara, and the joy on her face knew no bounds. She was extremely ecstatic with the news. Aurora laughed. She hadn't gotten anything yet, but she was certain that before the next day, her email was bound to break down because of the amount of mails she was sure to receive. “That's great, Clara. What does the opportunity look like?” “They have a project they are meaning to start by the end of the month, and their representative just told me that they'll love it if I can tailor my schedule and try to see if I can be the ambassador of the project.” Aurora grinned. She was happy for Clara. It was the perfect job for her also, because Aurora had never seen a woman who was so obsessed with her socials like Clara. There was Natalie, but while Natalie used her own for stalking rich young men, Clara used her huge following to document her life, her work place, a

“For once, Aurora, let go of work. Please.” She smiled, and as if he took that as a cue, he continued speaking. “Come with me to Bite and Brew tomorrow evening. They're launching their steakhouse menu, and seeing what they've done in the past with their menus, I can tell that this one will be outstanding.” She stared at him, her mouth going dry at the moment. “Okay.. yes…what time?” She strutted, panicking at the last moment. Was she actually thinking straight? Was it real? Her boss had just asked her out on a date! “Oh, I'll have my driver come pick you up between the hours of six thirty to seven. How's that?” She fidgeted, her fingers trembling slightly. She dipped it into her coat to hide the trembling, before answering. “Yes, that will be just fine.” “Alright. Goodnight and see you tomorrow, Aurora.” Outside, as she slipped into her mother's old model Benz, she waited for a momen

  • The legacy of the supreme ruler   First date dilemma

She had never been to Bite and Brew, but she had seen pictures, and she knew that it was a formal setting. Not exclusively formal, but it was a nice place. Beautiful lights, splendid table clothes, and according to reviews she had seen online, excellent customer and deliver service. It meant that it was a good place, but it also left her with the problem of not knowing what to wear. At that moment, she wished that Natalie was in her house, and they had never quarreled in the first place. Opening the oven, she retrieved the apple pie she had been baking, her mother's favourite recipe. Staring at it, she seemed to acknowledge how lonely her life was. A huge cake, but nobody was there to eat the cake with her. It was saddening. Scooping a spoonful into her mouth, she wondered if it was weird if she packaged some in a foil bag for Lut. Was she doing too much? It was only their first date. So how was she goin

She had been his sister in his former life, and he wanted her to remain so.He wasn't buying the name and the title calling.“Who wouldn't like her? She's an excellent worker. Pays attention to detail, knows where and when to be. She's one of those people that you leave your problems to and know that they'll solve it without problems. That's Aurora.”Mia shrugged. She ate, then patted her hair.“Do you need help picking out what to wear? Or taking you to a better barbershop?”Lut stared at her, surprised.“Are you saying my barber isn't good enough?”“Well, some are better than others. You'll be ready before six thirty.”When she left the dining room, Lut found himself suddenly conscious of

“Good morning sir.” Hubert, his driver, greeted him with enthusiasm. He looked as if he had been waiting for him all the while. The car key was already in the ignition, and the man looked ready to peel the car into the road and begin driving at a speed that pleased him, which was Hubert's customary way of driving.Lutenant didn't care much about the way he was going to reach work that day. He preferred Hubert driving him because no matter how fast he drove, he was able to slow down before the police noticed that he was going past the speed limit. It was a fun thing to do.Hopefully, he never got caught because Lut knew how difficult it was getting the police to believe that he hadn't intended to drive past the speed limit.A few minutes later, he was out of the car as it had stopped in the garage of the consortium. Leaving the car, he made his way into the elevator, which took him directly to his office. As soon as he opened the door, he was hit by the strong scent of Aurora's perfum

  • A befitting welcome

Before Aurora got to work that morning, she was surprised to see the door open a few minutes after she had sent her best friend the text regarding her moving from the hotel back to the house.“Natalie? I didn't expect you so soon.”Her best friend looked as though life with Carl had its perks. She had a bag of groceries from the popular Macmillan store in one hand, and in another was a box of pizza.“I decided to jump in, arrange my things. I'll be going back to Carl's this evening. Did I tell you he is planning to get a place so that we can start life afresh? He's also planning something huge for my birthday. I don't know what it is yet, but I know that he has something planned.”Aurora didn't comment, knowing how difficult her best friend could be most times. Natalie and misinterpretations were a normal occurrence. The last thing she wanted was her best friend quarreling with her over something that was irrelevant.Such as Carl and his inability to stick to one relationship.“Well,

Where is he?”“There! There!”Richard was fast. He had run a lot back in highschool, and he hadn't forgotten how easy it was to forget everything and let his body glide. Richard didn't know how to start. He didn't have an invite, he didn't know the owner of the party, and he was only there because he wanted to get his girlfriend, who he was certain was already drunk and take her home. The first man stared at him in irritation, his eyebrow arched.“I'm guessing you didn't hear me earlier, mister. If you don't have an invite, I'm afraid you can't come to the party.”Richard didn't know what to do, so he did the first thing that came to his mind. He pushed the first guard, the frown on his face huge, and began to make his way into the warehouse. The other man stopped him, pushing him backwards.“Are you out of your mind? I'm certain you don't want to get shot at, mister. And the only way to do that is to pick your sorry self and leave this place this instant.”Richard squared up, refusing to admit defeat.“Look, there's someone I need to see there immediately, and if she doesn't come out this minute, her life will be in danger.”The first guard scoffed.

  • Party’s over

Tapping the table, he grinned at her.“Well, you've got that right. My father talked to me earlier today, and he maintained that he needed my answer considering the list of companies he had given me to look into.”He watched Aurora nod, seemingly interested.“Well, he said Johnson fabrics and co is trying to sell. From my findings, the company is going for five hundred million dollars, and while that's too much, I can see the advantages of the buy. The forecast considering the lifespan of the business isn't good, but with enough work and effort, I believe we can turn it around.”She shrugged, her beer in one hand, one leg crossed over the other. She looked like something out of a picture, as though she wasn't real, but a model in far away Europe.“Well, you sound as if you've already made your choice, Lut.”He rolled his eyes, sipping the vodka slowly now. The vodka was starting to get to him, the bitterness and the tipsy feeling that was settling like a blanket. If he was going to be

“Well, that brings our outing today to an end. Mr Cleveland is caught up in traffic and sadly won't be able to make it. We'll have to push the meeting to tomorrow.”Richard barely heard a word of what Mr Johnson had said. His mind was focused solely on Ariel, and the fact that she had just ended the call on him without even waiting to hear him out.“Richard?”“Yes sir, I understand. And I've heard you.”“That's besides the point. Will you be available tomorrow? I have a strong feeling that Mr Cleveland is going to be our buyer. Are you busy tomorrow? Classes or anything of that nature?”Richard shook his head in reply. He had a bunch of classes the next day, but he wasn't going to go. First things first, he had to stop joking with the woman who also served as his next source of livelihood. If there was anything he had to do at that moment,it was to make sure that Ariel was okay, and that she wasn't seeing someone else.Seeing someone else would serve as the fatal blow. It would eventu

They're starting to lay off the older workers, and I was sorting the good applications and tossing the rest. It's tough work.”She grinned at him.“Well, I'm proud of you. That shows you're not the lazy brat I always thought you to be.”He laughed, and tapping his steering wheel with his thumb, he began to speak again, eyes on the road.“Guess what? Dylan's elder brother has been arrested. He was on his way out of the state when he was caught by police officers. It's not looking too good for them now. With the phone evidence, the attack on you and the hired killers arrested, they've made this an easy case for us without even knowing it.”She nodded, not knowing exactly how to feel.Sometimes, she felt happy because she was certain that she wasn't the only woman who had gone through harassment in that office, but she was also afraid because she didn't want all the unnecessary attention and publicity on her once quiet life.“Well, you'll have to appear in court by next week, Aurora. We're letting a few older workers go, so there must be someone going through those applications on a daily basis. Aurora is still in her recovery phase, so Lut here said he's working in her place, and when she comes back, she'll owe him hours.”Mr James nodded before sitting.“That's good. Excellent work from you both. I've been trying to call you, Lut. The police have just arrested Dylan Rick's older brother. He was on his way to Seattle, but they managed to apprehend him before he got on the plane.”Lutenant smiled in spite of himself. It was good news. Each and everybody that was involved in making Aurora's life a living hell deserved what was coming to them.“However, the company's legal team is working on releasing them on bail, and the case begins next week. I'll have to cancel all my meetings, because I want to be there to see them go down. T
