Chapter 04

Ethan stared at the paper, the weight of the words sinking in.

Elena's revelation about the divorce shattered his world.

The years of maintaining his end of the contracted wedding now seemed like a futile endeavor. He encountered how he had met such a horrible person, who had no conscience.

Flashback

Three years ago.

Jon patted Tasha on the shoulder, then turned to find Ethan standing by the door.

"Yeah?" Jon, the other cab driver, said.

"Sorry," Ethan said. "I am here to clock out but find out that the lady at the front desk said I have to see you first."

"Yeah," Jon said, grabbing a chair. "I need you to drive. Someone needs a cab urgently, and it's late. If I go to pick them up, Tasha and I will be missing the movie tonight. And I trust you wouldn't want Tasha to miss something that gives her joy."

"You both could pass the way," Ethan replied. "I've got to take care of my dad."

"You see that?" Jon asked Tasha.

Tasha crossed her arms, walking to Ethan's front.

"If you think you work for my father and not me, you must be getting insane," Tasha said. "Will you get that cab and leave now?"

Tasha is the daughter of the cab company's owner. It was something different because she wouldn't talk this long. But she knew that she couldn't just tell her father to sack a cab driver because of another one.

Ethan shifted away, with anger.

"You know how it works here." A man said, with shrugs.

Ethan managed to put up a smile on his face before grabbing the cab keys. He walked out and climbed into his cab before driving off.

He arrived at the address, it was a mansion with expensive cars parked in the driveway. He finds a spot to park his cab and takes the passenger inside the house.

He knocked on the door.

"Coming." The voice, deep, coming in.

There a charming lady stood there.

Her hair was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen earlier.

She must be an angel. That is Elena Mick.

"Hey," Elena waved in his face.

He was shocked and quickly took his stand.

"I'm sorry, I got carried away." He said. "Someone needs a cab around here."

"Come in, let me get my aunt." Elena gestures for him to get inside, tipping his heart sideways.

Happily, Ethan walked inside the beautifully decorated living room.

Elena walked upstairs and returned ten minutes later with her handbag.

"My aunt will be down soon," Elena said as she walked towards the door but her purse fell on the floor. She didn't notice that as she walked out of the house.

Ethan noticed it. He picked it up and quickly ran after her. He caught up with her.

"Is she not out yet?" Elena asked. "If not, I don't know what to do because she never mentioned ordering something to me so I'm not clearing you out?"

Elena said as she walked up to a cab. But when she got to know that he didn't stop.

Elena paused and turned to Ethan. Her eyes glued to her purse at once.

"How do you.."

"It fell when you were stepping out," Ethan said handing it over to her.

Elena glared at the handsome cab driver, the one she had never met before.

She hadn't met someone as honest as he seemed to be.

Because the cash in her purse could feed him for a week.

It was strange that he even ran after her to return it gently.

"Thank you so much. You don't know how much you have helped me." Elena said, grabbing some cash and giving it to him.

Ethan paused.

"What?" she asked with the feeling that things weren't going well.

"I don't do this to get tips.." Ethan paused when someone opened the main door.

"Elena?" Elena's aunt stepped outside. "You talking to my cab driver? Remember a drop of sperm in your vagina might cause pregnancy and you know how that might hold on your future right now."

"Come on," Elena forced it into his hand before rolling her eyes at her aunt. "I'd love to have your contact. This is mine."

She grabbed a business card, written Understatement Inc. General manager.

Ethan almost choked up, he never knew that she could be someone as high as she was.

He thought she might be rich but never thought of this.

Being someone who had always been rejected daily. He quickly grabbed the opportunity and entered his contact on Elena's phone before returning it.

"Thank you, ma'am."

"This doesn't mean anything. " Elena said. "You have a great day."

Elena left in her cab, as Ethan dropped off Elena's aunt. She couldn't just stop asking about everything that happened.

Ethan returned to the cab company before clocking out for the day.

Ethan worked all days of the week. He faced tough days almost every time. He tries to resist whatever comes his way.

Ethan always thought about Elena but the last time was when he saw her.

Just a trip left for the day. Ethan picked up the fare and drove to the destination.

His phone buzzed out louder.

"Buzz, Buzz."

He answered the unknown number. Maybe he had some issues again.

"Hello, I'm sorry. Your cab is on the way!" Ethan mumbled, about to hang up. When he heard the cutest laugh at the end.

"Is that how you answered all your calls?" That was Elena, as she laughed more. "You know  you could get slacks off if you continue that right?"

"Right, I accepted," Ethan said. "Last time I helped with your lost purse. But I have found none today. So how may I help you miss?"

She giggled a bit before she forced herself to proceed.

"That wouldn't matter," Elena said. "I have something to tell you. Can you meet me up at the place?"

"I would gladly do that but," Ethan checked his wristwatch, "I'm late and I have to pick up another fare and I have got some things to handle after."

"Oh, I have a job for you," Elena said, trying to keep herself in the right state. "The contract is three years, we have to get married. But after that three years. You can leave. We can divorce and you will have your life back. There's a lot of rewards behind that."

Ethan just held the phone to his ears like it was some sort of miracle.

That could go a long way for him, he could pay his father's hospital bills.
