Sherry continued staring at Damien, thinking about whether to answer the call or not. She had an idea of the reason the man was calling her as she knew Damien wasn’t lying when he explained earlier but she didn't want to be bothered about it.
Damien’s miserable look only made her excited and what better way to make his life difficult than to watch him getting fired and rendered jobless? She stared at him for a while and let out a deep breath. “Maybe I should answer the call and hear what he has to say.” She muttered as she looked at her phone.
Henry shook his head “Why will you do that? It’s obvious he wants to ask you about Damien and maybe they will soon be here to lock him up?” He asked, his voice filled with annoyance and mockery.
If there was anyone who hated Damien more than anything, then it would be him and his way of venting his frustration was cursing out Damien. He wondered how happy he would be to see Damien crumble more than he already was.
“I think Sherry is right. We should at least listen to what he has to say. It’s not like we can suddenly push Damien away now, can we?” Sherry’s mother asked as she nodded her head and signalled Sherry to answer the call.
Sherry sucked her teeth angrily, rolling her eyes at Damien who was still on the ground as she answered the call. “Hello, this is Sherry Alistair.” She said.
“Oh, Yes. Mrs. Sherry, This is Mr. Damien’s boss at work. Do you have an idea where he is at the moment?” The man’s voice resounded over the phone and everyone in the room could hear him as Sherry had put the call on loudspeaker.
She dropped the phone on her lap and relaxed her head. “Damien? Is he not at work?” She asked, her eyes slightly closed as if she was tired of everything.
“No, Ma. He is not here. I was thinking... Er... I was thinking he was with you.” The man stuttered. He seemed to be scared of Sherry as his status was a lot lower than Sherry’s.
Henry rolled his eyes and sneered. “Look at him speaking like a loser. No wonder Damien can never be a successful person when his boss is just as dumb as him.” Not bothering to lower his voice, Henry berated the man scornfully.
His mother looked at him and shook her head “Don’t do that now, dear. We need to learn more from the boss if we want to find out what this liar is saying is true or not.” She whispered while glaring at Damien as if he was the dirtiest thing she had ever seen.
Sherry looked at her brother and her mother, she let out a deep breath and grabbed her head. “This is what happens when you mistake a useless and worthless man as a good-looking hunk. I thought all hunks were meant to be successful but I was wrong there.” She thought inwardly as she shook her head.
“Well... I don’t know where he is but I can help you reach him if you have anything important for him. What’s it? Did he cause a problem or did he steal something big?” Sherry asked with a smug smile on her face.
“No, Ma. He went to deliver some goods but he never returned and inside the package was a Rolex Daytona watch and it cost nothing less than $5 million. The company is going to be greatly affected if we can’t find him to return the watch or deliver it to the recipient.” The man complained. He was frustrated and scared.
Sherry’s eyes widened. She looked at Damien on the ground and frowned “Do you know if anything happened to him along the way? Was he shot by some criminals or maybe he is dead?” She asked. Her intention for asking that question was to see if Damien had stolen the watch to better his life or if something really happened.
Damien could have planned everything with his boss but someone as poor as him would know how foolish it was to plan anything with rich people as they could always cheat them and take all the money.
“It was reported that he was robbed on the way and it was confirmed but he never returned to give any report whether the Rolex Daytona watch was taken or not.” The man explained, relaxing a bit.
Sherry’s frown deepened. “Do you have an idea who that is? I mean the people that robbed him on the way.” She questioned.
“I don’t but the person that owns the watch is a notorious drug lord. He would do anything to get his watch back and he might even kill Mr. Damien if he heard that he lost the watch.” The man explained, tensing up again. The fear of what the drug lord could do to him made him weak for a few seconds.
Hearing that, Sherry nodded her head and placed her hand on the ending key “It’s okay. I will call him and ask him what happened. He will reach out to you soon.” She replied and ended the call.
If one thing was clear from the call to Damien, it was the fact that Sherry was trying her best to give Damien a little respect but he knew it wasn’t for him but for herself. He knew she did that to paint herself good for a reason best known to her.
“Heard that? Your boss said the Rolex Daytona watch belongs to a notorious drug lord. What will you do now?” Henry asked with a smug smile on his face. He was more than excited.
Damien lowered his head and sucked in a deep breath. “I don’t know what to do and that’s why I’m here. Can you give me the money so I can get the watch back?” He asked sadly. He was bothered and hearing his boss’s voice only scared him more.
A notorious drug Lord? The fear of what the man was capable of was slowly traumatizing him and he was scared.
Sherry’s mother clapped her hand, laughing and shaking her head “This is the first time I’m witnessing something like this. How come you are so useless and senseless? You are so shameless and witless that you can’t even do something to help yourself rather than returning home to beg for money when you were attacked by robbers? What exactly is occupying the space for your brain?” She cursed as she continued shaking her head, not quite understanding what kind of person Damien was.
Henry stood up, walked toward Damien and grabbed his hair as he was still on the ground “Tell me, You Motherfucker, Why can’t you fight back when the robbers came and collect the watch back from them? Were you scared of death? Who else should die if not you?” He asked as he raised Damien’s head with his hair and made him look at his face. “Ain’t you tired of your miserable life? If I were you, I would have done everything to end my life as this is unwanted. Someone like you can’t continue living with us because you are wasting precious space, don’t you think?” He inquired, his eyes threatening and dark.
What annoyed him most was the unaffected look on Damien’s face. It was like he wasn’t the one that was being threatened at all as his face was calm. “What do you want me to do?” He asked calmly and slowly. He knew they wanted something back from him and he was ready to give whatever it was.
“Divorce me.” Sherry blurted and for the first time, Damien’s eyes twitched and his facial expression changed widely.
He had always expected her to say something like that one day but he never thought it would come so soon. The reason he had always worked hard and did things like animals was because he wanted to be prepared for the day he would be sent out of their house but he wasn’t ready yet. He hadn’t even made enough to last himself for a month especially if he was to rent an apartment first.
He opened his mouth and closed his eyes, unable to say a word as he was too shocked and broken. “What? You can’t do that? If you agree to divorce me, I will give you the money you need and you can get the watch. Win-Win, isn’t that nice?” She asked with a sly smile on her face.
Damien knew arguing wouldn’t do him any good. “Even if I say No now, they will look for another way to make me accept the deal and I need this money. I can’t die yet.” He thought as he sucked in a deep breath. He struggled to release himself from Henry and stood up “I will divorce you. Just give me the money so I can get the watch.” He said as he stretched his hand forward, ready to collect the money.
A bank card was handed over to Damien and without wasting time, he collected the card and sighed. “Thanks. I will quickly go now.” He said as he turned around, ready to leave. “Just make sure to return that card because the money there is more than enough to buy you.” Henry mocked but Damien refused to reply to him as he walked out of the house and headed straight for the shop where he knew he could get the Rolex Daytona watch. His journey there wasn’t as smooth as he thought as his boss wouldn’t stop calling him and when he got tired of ending the call, he answered and explained to him that he would get the watch soon. Getting to the shop, the first thing that entered his eyes was how grand the shop was and he stood in front of it, staring at the building for a while. “If only I am a little more fortunate, then I could have worked here as the manager or director but here I am, a penniless monger who has nothing to his name. The little chance I got in life will soon be taken away f
Seeing the men, Damien could barely work out what they wanted but to his surprise, the next thing he felt was a sharp pain and he lost consciousness. The men looked around to make sure no one suspected them or had their time before they quickly opened the door and bundled Damien inside. "He's not dead, is he?" One of the men asked as he watched Damien's body turn limp on the car's back seat. "I know you're just a driver but can't you use more of your sense? Who cares if he dies anyway?" Another man asked as he sat down beside Damien. "Well... It might not be that easy for you as he wouldn't make it that way. I'm sure you understand how he is and it's better not to annoy him at all."The third man replied as he walked over to the other side of the car, opened the door and entered. "It's time to leave. Let's just leave here!" The man beside Damien shouted as he hit his large hand on Damien's cheeks as if he was the source of his problem. The car started without much talking and they d
Damien closed his eyes, waiting for what would happen next as he knew no one would be able to save him anymore. Killian was ready to kill him and that would certainly be the end for him. While he was expecting the gun to burst his head, He heard footsteps walking toward them but he was unable to think about that as his mind was far too preoccupied with the fear of death. "Killian, Stop!" The man yelled as he took large steps and got to them in no time. Killian froze for a second but he soon composed himself and dropped the gun to his side before standing up. "Brother, what are you doing here?" He asked calmly as he quickly kept the gun he was holding. The man who entered looked like someone in their early late sixties with grey hair covering his head. His face was wrinkled but went far off from hiding his good looks. Damien noticing the change in the air, opened his eyes slowly and the first thing he saw was the back of Killian who was speaking to the old man. "Should I grab the
Everything seemed like a long dream to Damien as he listened to the story the old man was telling him. One thing he had figured out during the story session was that he identified the man but he wasn’t sure if he was right or not. He waited for the man to be done and when he saw that the man was done talking, he pressed his finger on his lips as if to feel the presence of his lips before he let out a deep breath and frowned. “Sir... If I may ask, who are you?” He wanted to confirm his suspicion. The old man smiled “My name is Tyson Avery.” He replied as he stood up and held his hand out toward Damien. “I made sure to put down your name at the orphanage home back then but I thought whoever adopted you would change the name. It seems that never happened.” The old man replied with a big smile on his face. Damien took the man’s hand and with his help, he was able to stand to his feet. The first thing he did was bow deeply “I’m sorry. I never intended to steal your things.” He apologize
Damien drove down to his new apartment with one of Tyson’s bodyguards but he did not waste much time there before taking an Uber back to the Alistair’s mansion. On getting there, he looked at the mansion he had stayed in for the past few years and his heart started to clench. The treatment he received from his wife and her family, the humiliation he faced because he was poor and the difficulty of everything that had to do with him just because he was poor made his eyes stung with tears but he forced it back. It wasn’t time to cry... No, it was his happiest day on earth and his life had finally changed. With the money that his father gave to him, sweat wouldn’t form on his forehead even if he bought off everything that belonged to Alistair and without struggle, his life was no longer the same. The family that was leap and bound greater than he was a few hours ago were now hundreds folds below him and he could destroy them with a wink if he wanted. This was the life he had always wan
The Alistair family mansion, lit up by the beautiful lights inside, shone brightly in the night and provided a sharp contrast to the houses around. There was an uproar in the house as the people inside were discussing their favourite topic. Damien Avery. He was standing quietly while they were throwing insults at him. He had his head down and was patiently waiting for them to stop speaking so he could tell them what was bothering him.“I’ve never been so humiliated in my life like I was today.” Sherry Alistair said, placing a hand on her head as she sneered at her husband, Damien. She was dressed as the powerful businesslady she was. A chic grey suit and accessories to match. It was a contrast to the sweatshirt and cheap shorts her husband was wearing. She had been so embarrassed when he had shown up at her party uninvited and unannounced.“I need to go in. You can’t just stop me here, I must get inside.” Damien had shouted outside the banquet hall. “Who are you and what do you thin
