10. Gifts for the Grand Commander

Leo is a West Coast soldier and currently holds a high-ranking position in the government with the important task of announcing the plans of Grand Commander Xavier to the attendees of a grand event in the city. With courage, Leo began his speech, and the faces in the room began to show various expressions.

Some attendees wondered why Grand Commander Xavier was not present at this event. "Is his schedule too busy?" whispered some among them. They furrowed their brows, trying to find answers to the absence of the grand commander.

However, some also displayed disappointment, sighing deeply. Those who had hoped to meet Xavier in person felt let down as it seemed that opportunity had vanished. In their hearts, questions continued to swirl, "Why isn't he here?"

Not uncommonly, some attendees began to talk about Leo. "He's really handsome," one guest commented with a smile. After Leo elaborated and answered some questions from the attendees, the event was soon to be concluded. Leo felt surprised when he heard that the attendees had prepared gifts for Grand Commander Xavier. "This is a form of their appreciation," Leo thought to himself, then he glanced in the direction of Xavier, who was observing him next to Savana, but no one knew that Xavier was actually the Grand Commander and was there, silently witnessing everything.

Xavier, who had been entertained by the unusual conversations about himself, smiled with delight. It turned out there were unique benefits to disguising himself as an ordinary guest because he could see the honest reactions of the attendees to his plans. In his heart, he was grateful to have an assistant as good as Leo who had performed his duties well.

"Alright, starting from this side, please come up to the stage from the company representatives who want to give gifts to our Grand Commander," Leo said with a smile to the attendees.

Some people began to step onto the stage, offering various gifts. From branded clothing, shoes, wristwatches, suits, wallets, and moving on to the next side, Leo looked shocked when someone gave such a substantial gift, an apartment for the Grand Commander to stay in during his time in the city.

"Are you sure you're giving such a gift to the Grand Commander?" Leo even asked the person who represented the upper-middle-class company. Not only Leo, but some other attendees, including Xavier himself, were also very surprised.

"Well, everyone has given their best. But we're only giving this, would the Commander be upset with us? Our wristwatch is not too expensive compared to the first one," Anggie whispered to Joseph, but Xavier's keen hearing could still catch it.

"It's alright, don't worry. We didn't come empty-handed," Joseph tried to reassure Anggie, and they both refocused on Leo.

"Yes, I'm sure! This is my best gift!" Roland, the one who gave the apartment, exclaimed.

Leo smiled widely, then shook Roland's hand, who was still standing beside him. He wasn't allowed to return to his seat quickly, unlike the other attendees who spent only a few seconds on stage after giving their gifts, immediately returning to their seats. Roland was held back because Leo wanted to know why he had given such a substantial gift to the Grand Commander.

"Roland, is it your name? Thank you very much, but not all gifts here will be accepted by the Grand Commander because I will ask him, who is currently watching this event from another place, if he is willing to accept these expensive items. Of course, he will be very grateful to all of you for coming to this event with good intentions and bringing gifts. But know that without you bringing gifts, just attending the Commander's invitation is already highly appreciated. Roland, who listened to Leo's explanation, could only nod briefly. He appeared confident in his gift.

"Are you sincerely giving this apartment? I mean, there are no other motives you have in mind. And I want to know what your profession is, and how you could afford this apartment and be motivated to provide a residence for the Grand Commander?" Leo asked, his curiosity evident as he gazed at Roland while still smiling broadly.

Roland seemed nervous, looking back at Leo and then glancing at the attendees who were waiting for him to speak. "Ah, of course, I'm sincere. There are no other motives, even though I'm just a deputy general manager representing the company and with the support of my family, I want to show the Grand Commander that I care about him," Roland said with a beaming smile.

Leo nodded slightly, then asked Roland to return to his seat for a moment because there were still several attendees who had not had a chance to go up on stage to deliver their gifts. When the Cooper family took their turns, Savana felt nervous because she had only prepared a sweet treat that she had cooked with Xavier wholeheartedly, along with simple decorations, as Savana couldn't come empty-handed while others were competing to attract the Grand Commander's attention with lavish gifts. Savana had no intention of drawing the Grand Commander's attention. She was already thrilled that her and Xavier's names were among the honored guests. Therefore, she wanted to express her gratitude with this sweet treat to the Grand Commander.

Xavier escorted his wife onto the stage to present the gift entrusted to Leo.

"Wow, Miss Savana, right? What's this? It seems different from the others," Leo suddenly tried to be friendly with Savana, even though Savana had never met Leo before.

Upon hearing her name, Savana appeared delighted and somewhat surprised. She responded with a friendly smile to Leo while still holding Xavier's hand. Meanwhile, Xavier maintained a poker face, occasionally glancing at Leo.

"Leo, I brought a sweet treat for the Grand Commander. I apologize that I could only make this; I hope he likes it, and please convey my greetings to him. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be here, and I hope that in the future, the Commander's responsibilities for the three districts go smoothly and successfully. I am very grateful," Savana said as she handed her small gift to Leo, expressing her sincere intentions. Her crescent-shaped, almond-like eyes and charming smile caught Xavier's undivided attention.

"Wow, this is very different from the others, Miss Savana. Is this just for the Grand Commander? Can't I try your homemade sweet treat too?" Leo exclaimed, followed by a small laugh, making Xavier give him a sharp look. "No, no, I was just kidding." Leo added immediately when he saw his commander's deadly look. "All right, please return to your seats, thank you for the various gifts."

After all the gifts had been collected on the stage, Leo asked for permission to leave the stage for a moment, because he wanted to contact the Commander-in-Chief before this welcoming event was over. Of course, Leo only exchanged messages with Xavier, who was quietly reading Leo's message while Savana engaged him in conversation.

"Xavier, I was pretty nervous earlier. Didn't you see how the Commander's assistant reacted? He even wanted to ask for our sweets. I'm really afraid that our gift won't be accepted because it's different from the others," said Savana, who was talking to Xavier.

"Calm down, let's wait before we think negative," Xavier said to calm Savana down.
