"Let's start with what we know so far. Onismo, tell us what you know."
Bhasera signalled to Onismo York, head of the York family, which just happened to be the family in charge of public security and Yani City's armed forces; making him the highest ranking soldier in the city.
Contrary to what most might think, Onismo was a small and quiet man. He barely spoke and had the temperament of a sophisticated man. If he was seen on the streets wearing his robes, one might believe him to be a scholar, but he was not wearing his robes. Right now, like Bhasera, he was fully clad in armour, with bloodlust oozing out of his body. He was a man who lived for battle, thus today was quite exciting for him, but none of his excitement showed on his face, which was as expressive as a piece of plain paper.
Onismo stood up and reported what he knew, "So far, our scouts have reported that a horde or daemons is gathering a dozen miles from the city, surrounding the entire city from all four walls. Including the wall facing the ocean. The first wave is estimated to hit us within an hour or so.""My word!"
"How is this possible?"
"This! This is.."
Clatters of noise came from the stands as multiple gasps of shock came in reaction to Onismo's words.
"Silence." Bhasera did not shout, but a single word from him had a better effect than a shout from anyone else within that room. His overbearing presence was not to be underestimated.
"Onismo, explain more regarding the oceanic daemons. If I am not mistaken, the horde usually only attacks from the land, does it not?"
"Indeed." Onismo nodded and continued. "Oceanic daemons are gathering underwater and are only awaiting orders to move. It is on this front that we are least prepared."
Yani City had four walls. The north, south, east and west walls. The southern wall was the one facing the ocean, and behind it were the ports.
"Although we were caught somewhat unaware, we will be able to sortie enough soldiers for the north, west and east walls. The issue is the south wall. Our only option is to have mercenaries and our private armies hold down that fort. That is the secondary concern."
Bhasera frowned, "Secondary? Then what are the other concerns?"
"I had an expert on daemons give me as much information as he could from the roar, and judging from the information he gave me, the beast is most likely an aquatic dragon. Although he was not able to pinpoint the exact species, he was able to determine its cultivation."
Tino could no longer keep silent and asked, "What is it?"
Onismo sighed, "It's a two star daemon!"
The previous news had made the room somewhat noisy, but this news made the room so quiet what might think the grim reaper was dancing about. Faces turned colours, spit was swallowed, breathing stopped and limbs lost their strength. Now everyone in the room knew why Onismo had labelled the lack of manpower on the southern wall as being a secondary concern!
A two star daemon! That means this was a creature that required at least two Fusion Realm experts!
Cultivation has small realms and large ones. Acolytes, Scholar and so on are only sublevels of the Foundation Building Realm. It was named so because it was when one was building the foundation for future cultivation.
The next major realm was the Fusion Realm! This was the realm that separated the wheat from the chaff, the talented from the prodigies, the skilled from the savants!
A single Fusion Realm expert could massacre thousands of Teachers and Scholars with a wave of a hand. And now a daemon which required two such experts was eyeing the city! This was a disaster!
Daemons had their own ranking system but it was much simpler than the one used by humans. Normal daemons had no rank. Ones that had energy equivalent to a Teacher or a Scholar were One Star Daemons. A two star daemon had energy equivalent to a Fusion Realm expert. But this was merely energy!
Daemons where much more gifted physically than humans, so it would usually take two humans on the same level as the daemon to bring it down. Which meant that at least two Fusion Realm experts were needed. But it gets worse.
Mankind are terrestrial creatures, thus fighting aquatic creatures requires much more effort and man power. Fighting a two star aquatic daemon would require at least 3 Fusion Realm experts.
Now for the real kicker. It was a dragon!
It was common knowledge that dragons were top quality daemons. Any creature with dragon blood running through its veins would be at least twice as strong as normal creatures its own level. Meaning that the number of Fusion Realm experts required to deal with this creature had rendered the number of soldiers available for the south wall irrelevant.
Bhasera said, "How many Fusion Realm experts can we call upon.?"
Onismo replied, "You from the Dwight Family, Myself and my father from the York family, Khama and Senior Oxlade from the Oxlade family. As for the Cole family I am not sure."
As soon as Onismo was done all eyes in the hall were on Tyson! What made the Oxlade, Dwight, York and Colr families so powerful was the presence of a Fusion Realm expert. It was a mystery as to how many Fusion Realm experts the Cole family had, which was part of the reason no families had made a move on them, after all, one must know their enemy before attacking.
"My Cole family will dedicate one Fusion Realm expert." said Tyson after some thought.
"Hmph! Outrageous! Only one? That is barely of any help at all! Unworthy of your position." The speaker was none other than Khama Oxlade, the current head of the Oxlade family. He was a fat man, but he was quite powerful. Both in terms of cultivation and financially. It would not be an exaggeration to say that all the city's wealth passes through his hands at some point.
"Now now little Khama don't cause trouble. My Dwight family can only present one expert at the moment as well." Said Bhasera with a light hearted laugh.
Khama could not help but cough. "Ehem, Senior Dwight, we are all aware that your family has two Fusion Realm experts that are far from the city running errands, and that they would be here to assist if they could. Not to mention that Senior is worth 3 experts by himself."
Tyson could not help but smirk, Khama never passed up an opportunity to curry favor with Bhasera, but he was not wrong. Bhasera's strength was well known by all, even among Fusion Realm experts he was quite powerful. There was a reason he had been in power for so long.
"I assure you that our expert will not disappoint this city. You have my word." Said Tyson with a smirk. His confident demeanor made Khama very uncomfortable, not to mention no who knew how powerful this so called 'expert'. Humans will always fear the unknown, and Khama was no exception to this rule."Very well then, let us make plans on how to deal with the southern wall issue. Anyone have any ideas?"The room quieted down at Bhasera's question. No one had the courage to mention what they thought, not to mention only a handful of people had the authority to speak at this moment. After some thought, Khama grinned slyly and came up with a proposal."As we all know the Cole family is considered one of the four great families of Yani City, yet they have never made any great contributions to this city regarding the horde."Tyson could not help but frown, "Khama, what are you getting at.?"Khama could not help but rub his belly in excitement, "It'
"Right now we have a dragon that wants us dead, an city of nobles that wants us dead, and an entire horde of monsters to boot. We don't have time for your shit. I personally enjoy breathing, so how about we deal with those matters first."Bastian considered himself to be a laid back, and he was. So him becoming so serious had an odd effect, even Tyson was moved by Bastian's words, not to mention Sula. Kenshin could not help but nod in approval.Tyson put his hand on his sister's shoulder. Calming her town. He squeezed tightly, making her come back to her senses. She stepped back and crossed her arms in front of her ample chest."Our family does not have enough soldiers to deal with the aquatic daemons, and the support given by the Oxlade and York families is non existent. They just said that to force me into a position with no excuse."Bastian grinned and started moving his hands in a way that one does when they are washing their hands in water. In looked
Kit took a deep breath. His heart was racing, but his mind was surprisingly clear. Maybe he just couldn't hear himself think against the blaring noise of the sirens of Yani city warning them all of what was coming, a constant reminder of the impending doom in Kit's ears. His uniform was new, or it may have been Kit had never seen actual battle, which did little to inspire his men's faith in him. He led a band of mercenaries that had been hired by the elders of the city about ten years earlier for this very purpose. It was less a band and more like a small army and for ten years they had known the horde was coming. They had talked about this day, trained for it, and waited for it for ten years. Now the day had arrived and the city expected to get its money's worth. It was obvious that the past ten years had been all talk for most of the mercenaries belonging to the avenging shield mercenary group. They wore light black leather uniform. Kit, their commander,
Yani city itself was situated on a large desert island. the island itself was about the size of a small country. The daemon horde usually came from the far south east region of the island where there was a vast jungle that had not yet been consumed by the desert. While the inhabitants of the city could leave whenever they wanted, the island happened to be rich in one thing: minerals, and lots of them. This is what had drawn humans to the island and forced them to stay. Now the city was thriving and it was too late to turn back.As Kit scanned the horizon all he could see was sand and trees until the point where the sky touched the ground. But there was no doubt about it, the horde was coming. He turned around on Valo, to face his men."Listen." He said, calmly. His voice was loud and clear, and as the archers on top of the walls were all cultivators he knew he didn't have to speak very loud for them to hear him. "Can you hear it?" as the wind faded into the backg
He was one of Kit's commanders and had been charged to hold the eastern wall. Now as the behemoths came closer he found that all the thoughts that had plagued him earlier. All the uncertainty seemed to fade away. Now his mind was clear, except for one thought. It was of her. He imagined her waiting for him in the city after the battle, and held on tight to the memory. They were getting closer now. Large, herbivorous behemoths with three large horns arranged in a triangle; two on its head and one on at the tip of its snout. They shook the earth as they knocked down anything in their way. If they got through then the city would definitely fall.Suddenly something heavy came down on him. He hadn't expected it. It knocked his horse over, throwing him to the ground. it was the corpse of a thunderbird that had been slain in mid-air. As he fell he spun around and kicked the thunderbird into the path of an oncoming behemoth. The lumbering beast tripped on the corpse, resulting in a d
She regained her footing and prepared to fire again. The thunderbird was busy snapping at something. She realised it was one of her men that the alpha thunderbird must have snatched as it swept over the wall.A few more chomps and it swallowed, leaving a dismembered leg to fall limp to the ground. Meera conjured another bow and began firing arrow-lances like crazy. With amazing agility it dodged them all and returned for another bite.it was clear the alpha was faster and stronger than normal thunderbirds, but Meera kept firing. As it swept over the wall again it snatched up another soldier with its tremendous jaws and took another one in its talons. The soldier trapped in its talons was still alive and was struggling to get free. The alpha thunderbird simply squeezed and there was a crunching noise. The soldier stopped struggling. The talons released him and he fell limp all the way to the hard ground. The alpha thunderbird made another hundred and eighty degree
Bastian sat in the Cole family garden. It was a charming botanical wonder full of flowers Bastian had never seen before and well trimmed trees and hedges in neat little rows. Soon the plan would be put into action, and Bastian's mind had been racing. Several gardeners were tending to the maize of stunning flora. His clothes were fine and comfortable, provided by Tyson Cole while Bastian had been living under his house to prepare for the ensuing battle that was to come. His hair was growing again, in fact he found it grew quite quickly, but Bastian had become accustomed to keeping it short. He had been taking walks in Tyson Cole's garden more frequently in the past few days, choosing to seclude himself in meditative isolation as much as he possibly could, and he knew why. Since the deafening roar – no, that was too recent – since he had woken up in a foreign body in this foreign land and trapped with this foreign soul inside him that claimed to have become a
Kitrid started breaking into a cold sweat, because Meera's point was quite valid. Best way to deal with a horde this size is to deal with the alpha. The problem was that in this case the alpha might be too strong for them to handle, so Kitrid was not sure how they were going to go about it."What is taking Tyson so long? The support he promised should be here by now" Kitrid was fighting on the east wall facing the south east direction from which the horde was coming from. Due to the fact that his troops faced the full brunt of the horde, the elder council had promised support. Tyson Cole represented the elders by giving his word that he would send reinforcement if they were in dire straits. At the moment they had lost thousands of men. Thousands more were injured and even more were to fall in battle if this were to continue. The birds in the sky and the beasts on the ground formed a perfect combination minimizing all the advantages Kitrid and his troops had.
