Joseph obeyed, trying to keep his spirits up. He knew that this conversation wouldn’t be easy, but he also didn’t want to continue to be looked down upon.

“Joseph,” Mr. William began, his eyes looking straight at him, expressionless. “Do you know why I called you in here?”

“It’s about coming back, right?,” Joseph replied, trying to keep his voice calm.

“That’s right,” Mr. William said, his hand tapping lightly on the tabletop.

“How long have you been away from here? Five years? Six years? And now you’re back, bringing your failure with you. Do you know what that means?”

“No, I don’t think my best friend failed,” Joseph said, his eyes shining with determination. “I learned a lot during my time out. I came back not because I couldn’t stand on my own, but because you wanted me to come back.”
