Chapter 1 Usual Day At The Office?

last update Last Updated: 2024-10-29 19:42:56

In the year 2022, a young office worker found himself at his desk with its surroundings filled with thick manuals, books, and self-made notes. The books and papers towered over him as he was a man of small stature, at best he was about 5 feet tall when standing at attention.

This was fitting as his stereotypical Asian heritage was present in his features which made him look younger than his actual age of 27 years old. From outside of the room, you could see his dishevel black hair peeking over the mountains of books.

And Just behind the sight of his black hair were the tools of his trade, a computer and a bag of safety equipment stored in a corner of his office which looked as if it had gotten too much use as the steel toed boots had its fair share of scratches, nicks, and faded smudges that looked of old grease.

While the sight of this kind of equipment seemed out of place for an office worker, this was normal for him as he would have to crawl and climb through the ships he needed to inspect and then write the corresponding paperwork to make the repairs.

As he is finishing up his most recent round of quiz questions with his mentor, he was elated that he would soon be able to cross off another requirement on his skills and training packet. It would be another small step to his goal of truly becoming an expert in his field of study as a ship engineer.

He dreamed of one day being able to confidently do his work with enough confidence that he would be able to help his fellow coworkers and ensure the safety of the sailors of the ships they sailed.

He imagined himself with his coworkers having discussions around a large table and as they were bouncing ideas off one another they were also cracking a few jokes that would then cause a round of laughter which would help lighten up the mood.

They would then end the meeting and would have come to a decision on their next plan of action that everyone agreed upon.

The office worker's imagination came to an end as his mentor began to close the conversation as she began to start her usual routine of post quiz questions. In the past, every time they would finish their sessions of quizzing, his mentor would berate him for his failure to answer what the mentor believed were simple questions.

While true from the view of the mentor of over 10 years of experience, this was difficult for a new hire like himself who has only been on the team for a single year. The office worker would then say that he will try to improve, but the mentor would then continue to berate him and question him on how he will improve.

Like all the times before, his mentor asked him these usual questions in a very forward manner, which the office worker could interpret had a hint of disdain and contempt directed at him in her words. Mentally brushing off the negativity from his mentor, the office worker began to speak his answer.

"Previously the readings were too much to remember due to the total pages in the manuals are over a hundred pages, so a solution we discussed before was to write down notes to ensure I would understand.

I have done so in a format that is more comprehensive to myself which I believe has helped me to improve as the number of questions I can answer this time showed much better results than last time. To further improve I want to include …."

"Let me stop you there, Show me your notes."

Interrupted by the mentor, the office worker slightly stalled but dutifully turned his attention to his computer. His focus seemingly sharpened in an instant, his eyelids noticeably widening as he swiftly moved his hands to operate the computer and brought up the 20 page long typed document.

The pages were filled with only words in a single space format which left the page almost devoid of white spaces. The mentor then asked.

"So, these are your notes? The notes that should say or interpret what the manual says?"

"Yes."

The office worker affirmed with confidence as if to pressure him the mentor responded by taking a couple minutes to read his notes with an intentional glare and then turned her head to look at him.

With a heavy and harsh tone, the mentor shouted.

"YOU ARE LYING TO MEEE."

The office worker's mind was slightly shaken by these words but kept his composure calm on his face. He gave a questioning look at his mentor and thought to himself.

'What does she mean by lying? What have I done? Did I do something wrong? I won't get any answers by keeping silent, so I better ask.'

"What do you mean that I'm lying?"

"You have stated incorrect designations and terminologies in multiple sections of your notes."

The mentor pointed to a few words on his screen and the office worker just looked at them, confused by why this would be an issue. He had related the information he read to a personally well-known idea or word that would make it easier for him to more quickly remember and readily understand the information, so what is the problem?

Knowing that he could bring up why he used these so-called incorrect designations and terminologies, he knew from past experiences that he wou;d again be met with more criticism on how he should do his work.

He had always agreed with his mentor's "advice" and chose to instead withhold his words. He trusted in his mentor and believed that she was doing this to help him improve.

"I see, I'll be sure to use the exact wording next time. Best not to cause any future miscommunications from simple wording, am I right?"

A light chuckle escaped the office worker's mouth, as he attempted to crack a joke, but the mentor scoffed at him. She looked at him as if she was looking at dust.

A dust that was would soon drift off out of sight. Fortunately for her, this would soon happen as a lunch break was approaching, and she could finally have time to herself away from the office worker. Not wanting to stay another minute the mentor told the office worker.

"We will review your incorrect answers after lunch, be ready."

The office worker smiled and responded in kind.

"Sure thing and thanks again for your help."

The mentor looks at him, but instead of responding she turns away and leaves his room. As she moved out of the room, the office worker was able to see his fellow coworker and desk neighbor.

He was the office worker's previous mentor and the look on his face had eyes slightly widened as he tried to keep his mouth from forming any discernible emotions, but his fear towards the mentor could be seen by the office worker.

The office worker could also see the disappointment his fellow coworker had in him and relief that the mentor was out of the room.

The office worker, not minding the looks of his two senior coworkers, turned his head to his computer and began his review. In less than an hour he was able to answer all the questions he missed.

He begins to quiz himself to ensure that he would remember this key information. As he was quizzing himself, he dreamed about the future.

He was getting quite old, at the age of 27 he still did not have a girlfriend and all the friends he knew were somewhere else in the world chasing their dreams.

He had already lost contact with so many of his past friends and fellow college graduates. They either stopped responding to his attempts to reach them or were in places where he could not reach them.

Thinking that he would try again to reach out to his past friends, he reminisced on his personal history. There was warmth, joy, and the sweet tastes of many of his favorite foods.

BBQ meat on a hot summer day was a luxury for him and the warmth of the sun and food were not the only things that kept him from going cold. The warmth in his heart when he was with his friends brought a joyful ear to his eyes as he believed that they were all going to stay friends.

Before he could think in more detail of why he had become so separated from his friends, a sudden voice called out to him.

The sight of the supervisor's signature black hat was peeking around the corner of his office entrance and under that hat was the supervisor's familiar face. He had dropped by to see the office worker and called out to him.

"Please, come with me. We need to have an informal …  meeting with the branch head"

The office worker replied to his supervisor that he will be there as he begins to close up and save his work. But it was at this moment, the office worker's life would change, and he could feel it as if by instinct.

A chill had shot down his spine and a breath of air was caught in his throat as the mention of the branch head was ominous. This was compounded by the seriousness of the supervisor's expression that conveyed that he was holding back some form of negative emotion.

All of this was quite foreboding, and the officer worker picked up on this.

For the past year, the office worker has given his trust to his supervisor as he would always be willing to answer his questions and was forgiving for the small mistakes he would make from time to time.Over time the office worker felt he was close with his supervisor and felt that they would build a long-lasting bond of trust through future projects. But this was now in contention, as the office worker knew that his instincts were usually right whenever he got that chill down his spine. In the past he would obtain bursts of excitement or energy from this chill, but this time was not one of those times. This chill was similar to the numerous times he witnessed his past and current mentors conversing with the supervisor after a round of quizzing with him. He knew that he had made many mistakes and thought in his paranoia that his coworkers were reporting his failures to upper management, but h

From the black came an unknown noise. It sounded like a voice but was too soft to hear. "W….up….. Wak…. p." Azi's attention was drawn away from his thoughts as he attempted to focus on the noise to better hear what it was saying, and it soon became loudly clear as the noise formed into a voice calling out. "WAKE UP!! BOY!!" 'That sounds like.... a girl?' In the next moment, Azi could feel a cold sensation across his face and a wet sensation on his skin. With a cough Azi cried out. "What the heck. What was that?!" Feeling as if he took a hit of ice-cold water to the face, his eyes reflexively shot open from the biting col

We leave in two days so be sure to get it done or at least implement preventative measures.""Father!" Cried Shizu. "Why are you letting Yashimu handle the hunt, wasn't I the one to be in charge of that task?""Shizu!" He wanted Yashimu to hear what he was going to say next and motioned him to follow. Ozen made his way to an inn in the northern portion of the village, which was well known for its food but more importantly was the exclusive use of its private rooms for discussion. The inn was quite large as its entrance could fit a carriage through its doors. The sign of the inn a was a white cloth painted with the symbol of a hearth. As he entered the inn, he gestured to the innkeeper he was familiar with. She was a woman with a large red coat over her white ensemble, and she led Ozen and Yashimu to a small private room purposely lit dimly to obscure the sight of its inhabitants. Within the room was a man of similar age to Yashimu wearing a simple regal attire. As Ozen and Yashimu moved to sit across from the man, the innkeeper closed

After quite a bit of walking, Azi and Shizu arrived at the smithy on the edge of the southern portion of the village. The smithy was a large wooden house that had an attached section that was made of stone. It looked somewhat worn down but was standing nonetheless, yet the foreboding large scratches and gashes against the walls of the house were worrying. A large chimney was protruding from the roof the stone section of the smithy and the clanging of metal could be heard ringing out in a rhythmic pattern. As Azi and Shizu made their way to the stone section of the house, which Azi could deduce was the workshop made evident by the large amount of heat encroaching onto him as he got closer to the entrance. Shizu opened the workshop entrance to the smithy and she shouted in a loud voice. "Hey, Uncle Kajima, are you here?!" With a grunt, an enormous man, of over 6 feet in height, threw a hammer towards the door which startled Shizu as she panically moved Azi and herself out of the pat

After a bit of time had passed, Kajima was able to answer a few of Azi's questions concerning what the Empire of Yamato was and helped him get a better understanding of the current common sense of the world. It seems that the Empire of Yamato was founded by the Gods of a religious faith called the Furuhitokami who were believed to be the creators of humanity. The Furuhitokami was also known as the first race to inhabit the lands of Ancient Yamato and were humanities creators, this was evident as Kajima told Azi that there were ruins of their civilization in the mountains of Kujyuri. The ruins have been around even before the recorded history of Yamato so the age of the ruins was estimated to be more than a few thousand years. The mention of ruins had caught Azi's attention, but what surprised him was what Kajima's words were implying."So you are saying that the Emperor of Yamato is one of the Furuhitokami and has lived for more than a few thousand years?""Yes. " Kajima said. "In the

Since we are close to the edge of the village, monster attacks here are becoming more common and there are times where a few stealthy monsters creep in by chance."Azi nodded at Kajima in understanding the importance of equipping himself for the sake of self-defense.He then looked around for something he could use and remembered from his memories that he always dreamed of being able to heft two swords in either hand.As he tried to lift two single handed swords, he realized that he lacked sufficient strength to carry them both or

On the 7th day of the journey, the caravan finally arrived at the gates of the Kujyuri. The welcome was quite extravagant since word had reached the capital that Rulu would be returning early. Even though she had only left the capital for a few weeks, she was very much missed by her people as the usual sight of Rulu helping the commoner had become a daily occurrence for them. This was also a special time as all of Ozen’s children would be returning. While not making any noteworthy actions during the ambush from the Uzuruans, Ozen’s 4 youngest sons had accompanied the caravan and were delegated to grunt work by Shizu to aid in the guarding of the second carriage under Touma’s command. The 4 brothers sighed in relief when they rode past the gate on their personal hororon mounts. They heard the cheers of the citizens grow loud at the front of the caravan since the people began to catch sight of Rulu, who sat on the front seat of the front carriage with Yashimu.Rulu blushed a bit, as th

Finished with situating the captured assailants, the caravan returned to its journey to the capital Kujyuri. The assailants were tied up and sat in an empty space in the supply carriage pulled along by the second carriage of the caravan. A guard took the reins at the front while at the back, Azi and Touma sat inside. Touma, who was in charge of the second carriage’s safety, was currently applying a magic binding spell on the assailants which caused them to feel sluggish and heavy. This magic spell derived its roots from colorless magic as it did not emit any elemental color when used. When Azi asked Touma about the spell, he commented that it sounded like gravity magic which sparked Touma’s natural curiosity that came from being the scholarly thaumaturge he was. A lengthy conversation about Azi’’s rudimentary knowledge about physics ensued and this was somewhat like a kind of punishment for the assailants. The constant back and forth of the two made it impossible for any of them to

After a somewhat rough awakening, Azi now stood outside of the carriage he was just sleeping in. He looked to his right and saw the offending person who had bitten him in his sleep. Noticing his gaze, Shizu turned her head away in embarrassment and coughed a bit to divert the conversation. “Let’s get going. If we don’t act quickly, the enemy will get away and we'll be left with no answers to our questions.” Azi sighed and gave a nod of agreement before running off with Shizu who was followed by a group of their caravan’s guards. Meanwhile, Kajima and Yashimu had agreed to stay near their carriage in order to keep watch over their belongings and to guard Rulu. It had been 3 days since the caravan had begun the 7 days journey to the capital and all their pace was good. It consisted of three carriages that each pulled along an additional storage carriage that was filled with the caravan’s belongings and supplies. They traveled in a line formation and were protected by the remaining group of guards that came with Rulu when she was traveling out of Kujyuri for the first time. Over half of her original guard was killed during the trek to Shisayama since they redirected their travel path to answer a distress call made by Shizu and her forces who were out on an expedition concern

Duodecem the 15th of 4382 AS On a somewhat warmer winter morning, for the first time in a while, Azi was spending time outside of his house and getting some exercise by sparring with Nosuri. As two arrows came flying at him, Azi jumped to the side in a panic. Being somewhat quick on his feet, he narrowly dodged it but was unable to retaliate against his opponent as he did not have his gauntlets equipped nor was he reinforcing his body with magic energy. In fact, Azi was purposefully not using his magic since the scrutinizing gaze that Shizu gave at the side told him to not even dare to try it. The reason for this started with Azi who, after constant protest, was able to convince Shizu to let him out of the house under the condition that he would be supervised by her at all times and that he did not use any magic. Shizu added the no magic condition as she had started to suspect that his magic energy was somewhat unusual and out of control. Recently, she deduced that a possible cau

Believing that it was a pillow, Azi proceeded to bury himself in its ever comfortable feeling. Unexpectedly, what caught his attention was that he felt as if the pillow was pushing him closer. It took him a couple seconds to realize that there were a pair of arms around his head that were holding him firmly while at the same time a pair of legs were wrapped around his lower waist. Waking up a bit more, Azi then realized that he was in the somewhat clingy, but unsurprising position of being hugged like a pillow by Shizu. For the past few days, Azi noticed that Shizu had become more clingy since the day he woke up. She would usually hug him from behind whenever they slept together in

Filled with Horonon feather, the couch felt somewhat firm but pliable like a stiff bean bag. Its outer cover was made of fur from an animal that was not local to Kujyuri which made buying it quite pricey, but the two of them chose to splurge a bit on their shopping date.It had been 3 days since the festival disaster and since then, Shizu and Yashimu were at work as they took turns throughout the day to take command of the relief efforts. One would take command of the village guard while the other would rest. It was currently Shizu's turn to sleep but she had to attend an unscheduled meeting with Jerome who demanded to see Azi.Shizu told him that he was injured during the disaster and that he would not be able to see anyone at the moment.
