The office worker stood up and began to walk to the branch head's office with his supervisor. For the past year, the office worker has given his trust to his supervisor as he would always be willing to answer his questions and was forgiving for the small mistakes he would make from time to time.
Over time the office worker felt he was close with his supervisor and felt that they would build a long-lasting bond of trust through future projects. But this was now in contention, as the office worker knew that his instincts were usually right whenever he got that chill down his spine.
In the past he would obtain bursts of excitement or energy from this chill, but this time was not one of those times.
This chill was similar to the numerous times he witnessed his past and current mentors conversing with the supervisor after a round of quizzing with him. He knew that he had made many mistakes and thought in his paranoia that his coworkers were reporting his failures to upper management, but he had believed in his delusion that his coworkers were not speaking ill of him.
He assumed that they were just reporting his progress in a professional manner with no bias as they were the skilled professionals in this office.
He was wrong.
Sitting in the chair across from his branch head, he feared that today would be the last day of his career at this office but hoped that it wasn't true. Yet again he was wrong. Unfortunately, he was given a choice between two options that both had him losing his job in the end.
After 17 years of study, self-reflection, trial-n-error, hardship, sleepless nights, and stress he had finally obtained the job he wanted. It had everything he needed. A good pay, insurance, and not to mention the fantastical task of repairing ships of such a variety of sizes and purposes.
But this came to an end on that day. That day was November 4th, 2022, at 9:38 AM.
As the office worker signed his name for resignation rather than termination, which would forever ban him from ever obtaining a similar job, he chose the less damning of the two choices. The reason for his removal from his position was a list of what he knew were nitpicked reasons that were believed to be sufficient proof of his incompetence and lack of ability.
As he was listening to the reasons, he realized that they were all from his past and current mentors' complaints. But he also noticed that there was no mention of his upward progress after these incidents, so as the reasons continued to pile on each other, an emotion began to stir in the office worker.
The reasons all differed from each other and were still only small hiccups that were later prevented from occurring in the future as he knew that he was making improvements. Yet his mentors never reported his improvement but rather only emphasized his past mistakes.
But this did not matter to the branch head as he had already made his decision. The office worker noticed that the branch head looked at the office worker with tired eyes that looked as if he just wanted to get this done quickly and move on. The situation was already generating an awkward atmosphere and was getting only more awkward as time passed.
The supervisor was looking at the office worker with a sorry expression believing that there was nothing he could do and felt that while his decision to remove the office worker from his position was the right one, it was a difficult one.
At that moment the office worker understood that both the branch head and supervisor had given up on him. They gave up on the potential they once saw in him only a year and a half prior, during his time as an intern under them.
The office worker also understood that there was nothing he could do and politely complied under an expression of false calm. He did his best to hide the disappointment and anger, but these emotions were not directed at his colleagues.
These emotions were directed at himself as he had sworn to himself to help others and wanted to help carry the responsibility that burdened his coworkers.
In the end, he failed, and he was deemed a failure by upper management. As he began preparing his luggage to leave the office, he called a short meeting with his coworkers to say goodbye.
Around a table were his older coworkers that he looked up to and also saw some of the coworkers of similar age to him. He felt especially connected with one coworker that he knew for many years as they went to the same school and college.
But when he saw his current mentor, his mind came to an understanding. While he respected her for her skills, he could no longer feel respect for her as a person. The smiling look of glee on her face caused him to no longer feel any emotion towards her.
Over 70% of the reasons for why he was being removed from his job was from his mentor. A gut churning emotion of conflict began to fester in his mind as he said his goodbyes to her with a fake smile to hide the inappropriate facial expression trying to surface.
This conflict in his mind was only compounded by the absence of his past mentor who stepped out to do other work and seemed to purposely miss the chance to say what was likely the last conversation he would have with his past mentee.
As he continued his goodbyes, he shook the hands of his coworkers of similar age, he was emotionally struck again as he felt no reassurance from their grips. They were loose and their eyes were uncaring of his situation.
In this moment, the office worker felt the emotions almost fester out onto his outward facade as he felt betrayed.
After many years, he thought there was a friendship between himself and his longtime colleague, but this was just an illusion as his colleague did not reciprocate the friendship he gave.
He continued his goodbyes and was able to feel a slight amount of ease from his other older coworkers whose handshakes were not only firm but warm as their smiles also helped to stem the festering in the office worker's mind.
After all was said and done, he left the office with his large suitcase in hand.
As the office worker began his trip home, he drove his car down the highway as quickly as he could. He wanted the sweet relief of resting in his bed and the silence of his home to be able to think clearly but realized that he should at least inform his family of the situation.
So, as he began fiddling with his smartphone with one hand while keeping his eyes on the road, he attempted to call his dad as he felt he could talk to him about his situation. His father would hear him out since his father was so accepting of his hobbies and passions from when he was a child and they both loved to talk about a variety of topics.
He felt that if they talked a bit then there could be some relief in his heart and a cure for the festering in his mind.
But suddenly a loud crunch was heard, his attention then turned to his left and saw that an enormous figure of what looked like the front of a truck was rushing towards the side of his car. He could not turn the car away fast enough as he only had one hand on the wheel and the resistance of the wheel was too much for just one hand.
With his ability to think decreased from splitting his attention between the road and his smartphone, it was impossible to produce any action to save himself. His mind raced for a solution, but this didn't matter in the next few moments.
The next scene he saw was a red and brownish puddle in front of him and a cold sensation in his lower body. He attempted to move his legs but there was no response.
He suddenly realized that not only could he not move his legs, but that he was pinned into the seat of his car as the car's frame had deform so much that he could see his legs were crushed from the knee down.
His realization was further worsened by the noticeable smell of gasoline mixing with his blood and other unidentified fluids and solids. It filled his nose and out of nowhere he began to retch. The gory sight of his crushed leg and flowing blood made him queasy, but as he was emptying the contents of his stomach a bang deafened him and a momentary burning sensation overcame him.
Then, all he could see was black.
On November 4th, 2022, at 12:32PM the car of previously known Ship Engineer Azi Montagne was caught in an accident with a cargo truck containing liquid and solid fuels required of the ships he previously worked to repair.
The very lifeblood of the ships that this young man worked to repair had covered him and took his life as both the solid and liquid fuel was ignited by a spark.
The news would report that there was no body to recover as it was concluded that the explosion had vaporized all traces of him.
While the complete disappearance of a person would constitute wide interest, this was not the case. Instead of his death being the main topic on the news, it was instead the mysterious disappearance of the solid fuel that got the attention of society.
The qualities it had were believed to be durable enough to take on a nuclear strike and had mysterious properties that were yet to be fully researched.
While his life had come to an end on that day, in some sick twist of fate, luck, or coincidence this event gave Azi Montagne a new opportunity in his life's tale, an opportunity to travel through tales.
In a black void a young man, Azi Montagne, writhed in agony as the only thoughts he could only muster were of pain. The young man screamed out as if something was attempting to rip him to shreds."AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, AHHHHHHHHHHHHH, AHHHHHH, ahhhh, aHH, .aa..Hhh."His voice slowly became weaker and weaker over time but would then rebound as he would scream out again in even more pain. He felt as if more energy he didn't know he had, forcefully entered into his mind to keep his consciousness alive so that if could continue to be tortured by the hands of pain and suffering. The sensations of pain changed throughout this experience but were still so unbearable that at one point he could feel as if small chunks were being forcefully pressed into his body while other parts of his flesh were being removed from his body in a slow and agonizing manner that only served to extend his suffering. With it, was also a feeling where his mind felt as if it were expanding to a point where he could feel h
Black, all Azi could see was black as his awareness came back to him. He felt like he was lying down on a hard floor as he could begin to feel the aching in his lower back and neck. A chill ran across his body and he wondered to himself. 'Hmmm? What happened, wasn't I with Ozen? Where did he go? And why am I laying down? And why can't I see anything? Hmm....' From the black came an unknown noise. It sounded like a voice but was too soft to hear. "W….up….. Wak…. p." Azi's attention was drawn away from his thoughts as he attempted to focus on the noise to better hear what it was saying, and it soon became loudly clear as the noise formed into a voice calling out. "WAKE UP!! BOY!!" 'That sounds like.... a girl?' In the next moment, Azi could feel a cold sensation across his face and a wet sensation on his skin. With a cough Azi cried out. "What the heck. What was that?!" Feeling as if he took a hit of ice-cold water to the face, his eyes reflexively shot open from the biting col
After a heated argument between Shizu and her newly introduced brother Yashimu which resulted in another intervention made by Ozen, to prevent Shizu from doing anything drastic. Everyone calmed down and discussed their plans.Starting the conversation Ozen spoke first."Yashimu, I need you to finish up the hunt I had given to you and your sister. We leave in two days so be sure to get it done or at least implement preventative measures.""Father!" Cried Shizu. "Why are you letting Yashimu handle the hunt, wasn't I the one to be in charge of that task?""Shizu!" Yelled Ozen in a firm tone of voice, his eyes now squinting as his brow furrowed."I want you to give Azi a tour of Shisayama. Get him clothed and have him take up residence with Kajima, he owes me a favor and I believe this is a good fit for its use. I will have no complaints out of you on this matter but be at ease child. Know that you will be taking part in the hunt. Your brother needs this experience as you already have muc
Seeing Shizu guide Azi on a tour of Shisayama, Ozen turned to Yashimu and told him to come with him before leaving to make preparations to finish the planned hunt. He wanted Yashimu to hear what he was going to say next and motioned him to follow. Ozen made his way to an inn in the northern portion of the village, which was well known for its food but more importantly was the exclusive use of its private rooms for discussion. The inn was quite large as its entrance could fit a carriage through its doors. The sign of the inn a was a white cloth painted with the symbol of a hearth. As he entered the inn, he gestured to the innkeeper he was familiar with. She was a woman with a large red coat over her white ensemble, and she led Ozen and Yashimu to a small private room purposely lit dimly to obscure the sight of its inhabitants. Within the room was a man of similar age to Yashimu wearing a simple regal attire. As Ozen and Yashimu moved to sit across from the man, the innkeeper closed
After quite a bit of walking, Azi and Shizu arrived at the smithy on the edge of the southern portion of the village. The smithy was a large wooden house that had an attached section that was made of stone. It looked somewhat worn down but was standing nonetheless, yet the foreboding large scratches and gashes against the walls of the house were worrying. A large chimney was protruding from the roof the stone section of the smithy and the clanging of metal could be heard ringing out in a rhythmic pattern. As Azi and Shizu made their way to the stone section of the house, which Azi could deduce was the workshop made evident by the large amount of heat encroaching onto him as he got closer to the entrance. Shizu opened the workshop entrance to the smithy and she shouted in a loud voice. "Hey, Uncle Kajima, are you here?!" With a grunt, an enormous man, of over 6 feet in height, threw a hammer towards the door which startled Shizu as she panically moved Azi and herself out of the pat
After a bit of time had passed, Kajima was able to answer a few of Azi's questions concerning what the Empire of Yamato was and helped him get a better understanding of the current common sense of the world. It seems that the Empire of Yamato was founded by the Gods of a religious faith called the Furuhitokami who were believed to be the creators of humanity. The Furuhitokami was also known as the first race to inhabit the lands of Ancient Yamato and were humanities creators, this was evident as Kajima told Azi that there were ruins of their civilization in the mountains of Kujyuri. The ruins have been around even before the recorded history of Yamato so the age of the ruins was estimated to be more than a few thousand years. The mention of ruins had caught Azi's attention, but what surprised him was what Kajima's words were implying."So you are saying that the Emperor of Yamato is one of the Furuhitokami and has lived for more than a few thousand years?""Yes. " Kajima said. "In the
Kajima led Shizu and Azi through a door out of the smithy which led to the wooden section of the house. Traversing across what looked to be a living room, they next entered what was considered to be a storehouse, but the door had multiple locks on it.After a bit of time Kajima was able to remove all the locks and motioned Azi to enter as he informed him."There has been an increase in monsters and predatory animals so grab something to help defend yourself. Since we are close to the edge of the village, monster attacks here are becoming more common and there are times where a few stealthy monsters creep in by chance."Azi nodded at Kajima in understanding the importance of equipping himself for the sake of self-defense.He then looked around for something he could use and remembered from his memories that he always dreamed of being able to heft two swords in either hand.As he tried to lift two single handed swords, he realized that he lacked sufficient strength to carry them both or
After Azi, Kajima, and Shizu equipped themselves at Kajima's smithy, the trio were making their way to the central section of the village. The group of soldiers that came along with Ozen, Yashimu, and Shizu were taking up residence in some of the barracks used by the village watch. Kajima led the group with Azi following behind and Shizu at Azi's back. While they were walking, Shizu had a noticeable grin on her face whenever Azi turned to meet her gaze. This caused Azi's face to redden due to how he remembered that when he came to from passing out earlier, he noticed that he was drooling and while he would not usually feel that embarrassed about drooling in his sleep. It was different this time as his head was in Shizu's lap. His situation was made worse as Shizu described how much of a dumb face he had when he was sleeping in her lap and that he acted like a docile puppy that wanted to be pampered. This was evident as she saw him grasping and nibbling onto her lap that now had a
On the 7th day of the journey, the caravan finally arrived at the gates of the Kujyuri. The welcome was quite extravagant since word had reached the capital that Rulu would be returning early. Even though she had only left the capital for a few weeks, she was very much missed by her people as the usual sight of Rulu helping the commoner had become a daily occurrence for them. This was also a special time as all of Ozen’s children would be returning. While not making any noteworthy actions during the ambush from the Uzuruans, Ozen’s 4 youngest sons had accompanied the caravan and were delegated to grunt work by Shizu to aid in the guarding of the second carriage under Touma’s command. The 4 brothers sighed in relief when they rode past the gate on their personal hororon mounts. They heard the cheers of the citizens grow loud at the front of the caravan since the people began to catch sight of Rulu, who sat on the front seat of the front carriage with Yashimu.Rulu blushed a bit, as th
Finished with situating the captured assailants, the caravan returned to its journey to the capital Kujyuri. The assailants were tied up and sat in an empty space in the supply carriage pulled along by the second carriage of the caravan. A guard took the reins at the front while at the back, Azi and Touma sat inside. Touma, who was in charge of the second carriage’s safety, was currently applying a magic binding spell on the assailants which caused them to feel sluggish and heavy. This magic spell derived its roots from colorless magic as it did not emit any elemental color when used. When Azi asked Touma about the spell, he commented that it sounded like gravity magic which sparked Touma’s natural curiosity that came from being the scholarly thaumaturge he was. A lengthy conversation about Azi’’s rudimentary knowledge about physics ensued and this was somewhat like a kind of punishment for the assailants. The constant back and forth of the two made it impossible for any of them to
After a somewhat rough awakening, Azi now stood outside of the carriage he was just sleeping in. The cold night air chilled his skin but it did little to help his situation as he could still feel the stinging heat from the red teeth marks on the side of his neck. He looked to his right and saw the offending person who had bitten him in his sleep. Noticing his gaze, Shizu turned her head away in embarrassment and coughed a bit to divert the conversation. “Let’s get going. If we don’t act quickly, the enemy will get away and we'll be left with no answers to our questions.” Azi sighed and gave a nod of agreement before running off with Shizu who was followed by a group of their caravan’s guards. Meanwhile, Kajima and Yashimu had agreed to stay near their carriage in order to keep watch over their belongings and to guard Rulu. Of the caravan’s guard detail of 50 people, 20 guards protected the first carriage, 10 guards with Ozen’s four youngest sons and Touma protected the second car
Duodecem 18th of 4831 AS During the end of winter, snow was still prevalent in the nation of Kujyuri as it was known for its year long snowfall. The caravan, while unhindered from the lessening snow, still felt the effects as the personnel still slightly shivered from the cold while in the middle of their trek through the forest and mountain paths of the snowy nation. It had been 3 days since the caravan had begun the 7 days journey to the capital and all their pace was good. It consisted of three carriages that each pulled along an additional storage carriage that was filled with the caravan’s belongings and supplies. They traveled in a line formation and were protected by the remaining group of guards that came with Rulu when she was traveling out of Kujyuri for the first time. Over half of her original guard was killed during the trek to Shisayama since they redirected their travel path to answer a distress call made by Shizu and her forces who were out on an expedition concern
Duodecem the 15th of 4382 AS On a somewhat warmer winter morning, for the first time in a while, Azi was spending time outside of his house and getting some exercise by sparring with Nosuri. As two arrows came flying at him, Azi jumped to the side in a panic. Being somewhat quick on his feet, he narrowly dodged it but was unable to retaliate against his opponent as he did not have his gauntlets equipped nor was he reinforcing his body with magic energy. In fact, Azi was purposefully not using his magic since the scrutinizing gaze that Shizu gave at the side told him to not even dare to try it. The reason for this started with Azi who, after constant protest, was able to convince Shizu to let him out of the house under the condition that he would be supervised by her at all times and that he did not use any magic. Shizu added the no magic condition as she had started to suspect that his magic energy was somewhat unusual and out of control. Recently, she deduced that a possible cau
A few days after Azi awoke from his long slumber, he felt a familiar, but overly warm sensation encapsulating him. His eyes flickered open as his usual habit of waking at the crack of dawn kicked in. He moved his head to survey his surroundings and he again felt a soft sensation brush against his cheek. Believing that it was a pillow, Azi proceeded to bury himself in its ever comfortable feeling. Unexpectedly, what caught his attention was that he felt as if the pillow was pushing him closer. It took him a couple seconds to realize that there were a pair of arms around his head that were holding him firmly while at the same time a pair of legs were wrapped around his lower waist. Waking up a bit more, Azi then realized that he was in the somewhat clingy, but unsurprising position of being hugged like a pillow by Shizu. For the past few days, Azi noticed that Shizu had become more clingy since the day he woke up. She would usually hug him from behind whenever they slept together in
On the night of the fourth day after the incident, Shizu had invited Rulu, Nosuri, and Ougi for dinner as Rulu offered to make Shizu a meal to help lift her spirits. While Shizu wanted to help cook for everyone she was not allowed into the kitchen due to Rulu’s insistence, so Shizu was relegated to setting the table. Her mind was still on Azi as he still showed no signs of waking up anytime soon, but after placing down the last of the plates Shizu caught a whiff of the food and felt her mind calm a bit. She then saw that the meal was ready as Nosuri and Ougi were walking over with plates of food in hand. Taking another whiff of the delicious smell in the air, Shizu sighed in relief and she complimented Rulu. “Your cooking always smells so good Rulu, I truly wish I could eat your food everyday.” Shizu then proceeded to rub her cheek against her younger sister’s as she gave a forceful hug charged with sisterly love. “T-Thank you Sister, but please not in front of the others. P-Ple
Shizu slumped on the couch in the living room of Azi’s house. It was a piece of furniture they had picked out on their day out due to how soft and comfy the black colored couch felt to the touch. Filled with Horonon feather, the couch felt somewhat firm but pliable like a stiff bean bag. Its outer cover was made of fur from an animal that was not local to Kujyuri which made buying it quite pricey, but the two of them chose to splurge a bit on their shopping date.It had been 3 days since the festival disaster and since then, Shizu and Yashimu were at work as they took turns throughout the day to take command of the relief efforts. One would take command of the village guard while the other would rest. It was currently Shizu's turn to sleep but she had to attend an unscheduled meeting with Jerome who demanded to see Azi.Shizu told him that he was injured during the disaster and that he would not be able to see anyone at the moment. This caused Jerome to protest and reasoned that he h
“Damnit!!” Shouted Jerome as he pounded his fist into the top of the table he sat at. He was currently inside his room at a luxurious inn. After his failed attempt to join the fight, Jerome was whisked away by his mercenary captain, Ghost.Due to Ghost’s rough handling of Jerome, the captain had inadvertently caused Jerome to pass out. While passed out, he had a continuous nightmare of his traumatic experience which eventually woke him hours after the battle ended. He was then called to meet with Shizu and Yashimu to discuss the relief efforts to combat the issues that will arise from this sudden monster attack. Jerome expected to get a tongue lashing from both of them, but he didn’t expect what was now on his table. After their meeting, Yashimu gave Jerome a packet of papers and was instructed to review them for the meeting that would take place the next day. It was already the middle of the night but Jerome, a “hard working” council member, pushed forward with his pride as his fuel
