Chapter 11 - Affording a luxurious life

Jeremy took a deep breath.Initially, he had planned to keep Avery in the dark about the source of the money that had settled their daughter's medical bills.

He had instructed the doctor to tell her that an anonymous benefactor had stepped in, but Noah's deceitful behavior had shifted his resolve.

He had messaged the doctor on their way to the hospital, asking him to be honest with Avery, knowing that she would undoubtedly ask.

"Say something, Jeremy," Avery snapped, her patience fraying at the edges as her husband maintained his silence.

Clearing his throat, Jeremy began, his voice faltering as he set up into his fabricated explanation.

"An old friend of mine...his father happens to be the director of this hospital," he stammered, the falsehoods slipping easily from his lips. "So I spoke to him about Mia's condition, and he kindly waived the bills."

Jeremy's gaze shifted, his hands clenching and unclenching as he battled the guilt that threatened to consume him.

Avery's brow furrowed, confusion etching itself across her features. "You've never mentioned having such an influential friend before. This is the first time I've heard of this," she remarked, her voice tinged with disbelief.

"The thing is, Avery," Jeremy began, his voice a study in deception as he continued, "I'm not the best at keeping in touch with friends. I hadn't spoken to him in years, but I ran into him as I was about to leave to meet your grandparents for help. It was a stroke of luck." His words rang hollow, his body language betraying his discomfort as he longed for his wife's trust.

Avery stared at her husband, her eyes searching his face for any hint of dishonesty. After a brief silence, she spoke.

"Then he must be a good person. Did he ask for anything in return?"

"No, nothing at all," Jeremy replied, his shoulders sagging with relief as his wife accepted his explanation. He hid the bitter taste of his lie behind a smile, silently grateful that she had believed him.

"Jeremy," Avery began, her voice tinged with compassion, "I think we should go and thank the director right now. I can only imagine what waiving off such a large amount would do to the hospital's finances. We should express our gratitude in person."

Jeremy sighed inwardly, already anticipating the challenge of dissuading Avery from her well-meaning suggestion. His mind raced for an excuse, his fingers drumming against his leg in a rhythm of nerves as he tried to find a way out of this delicate situation.

As if divine intervention had arrived just in the incision of time, Jeremy's eyes flitted to the wall clock, its hands ticking toward the approaching evening.

"It's getting late," he observed, his words tinged with a hint of relief. "I don't think the director will still be around this evening. How about we go and thank him tomorrow, when he's back at the hospital?"

Avery nodded in agreement. "Alright, that sounds like a good plan."

Jeremy could see Avery looked a bit worried and stressed by the situation. Gently, Jeremy took Avery's hands in his own, his eyes softening with compassion as he tried to assuage her fears.

"Hey, my love. Stop worrying. I'm here for you and Mia. I promise to do everything in my power to give you both the life you deserve," he whispered, the sincerity in his voice a salve to her troubled soul. He leaned in, his lips brushing against hers in a tender kiss.

Just as Jeremy's tender gesture melted away Avery's concerns, they both heard a faint stirring from the bed.

They turned to see their daughter's eyes flutter open, her small frame shifting as she awoke from her slumber. Without hesitation, Jeremy rushed to the call button, his hand pressing down on the button with urgency, eager to summon the doctor.

As the couple entered the ward, Mia's eyes lit up with recognition. "Mummy, Daddy, is that you?" she asked in a voice still heavy with sleep.

"Yes, sweetheart," they answered in unison, their footsteps quickening as they approached her bedside. They stood there, smiles on their faces and love in their hearts, basking in the miracle of their daughter's recovery.

Moments later, the doctor entered the room, his footsteps brisk as he approached Mia's bedside. He examined her, taking note of her vital signs and the progress she had made.

"She's doing well," he said, his voice even and professional. "I'll administer a mild pain relief to ease her muscle aches and help her fall asleep. For now, she won't be needing solid food."

As the doctor injected the medication, Mia's voice, still filled with the innocence of childhood, chimed in, "Daddy, can we go home soon? I miss playing hide and seek with you."

A soft smile spread across Jeremy's face, his heart swelling with love as he leaned down to press a tender kiss to his daughter's forehead. "We'll be home soon, baby," he promised, his voice warm and soothing.

The room seemed to glow with the joy of the moment, as even the doctor and nurse found themselves smiling at the exchange.

With Mia's steady breathing signaling that she had drifted into a deep slumber, Avery turned her attention to her husband, a mischievous twinkle in her eyes as she spoke.

"I'm hungry," Avery said, her teasing voice infused with a touch of playfulness as she turned to face her husband.

"Between all the stress and your timely arrival, I seem to have completely forgotten about the decent lunch I was meant to enjoy with Noah. You, my dear husband, truly are a knight in shining armor disrupting my plans and saving me from a meal disaster." She chuckled.

As Avery's teasing grin widened, Jeremy responded with an equally playful reply. "I'm glad I disrupted it," he said, his smile blooming.

The door to the ward swung open, its suddenness a jolt in the quiet room interrupting their friendly banter.

Jeremy's lighthearted moment with Avery was cut short as her grandparents entered the room, each holding a number of plastic bags that were undoubtedly filled with food.

The pair, dressed in their finest clothes, made it clear that they had gone out for an outing. their presence a stark reminder of the tension between them and Jeremy.

He sighed inwardly, bracing himself for the insults and mockery that were sure to come.

Avery's welcoming smile melted away into a frown as she addressed her grandparents, her voice laced with a note of surprise and annoyance. "Grandma, what brings you here at this time of night?"

"It's only 7pm, far from nightfall. Anyway, after your husband's rude remarks, Noah kindly offered to take us to a fancy restaurant, where we could have dinner and calm our rattled nerves." He puffed out his chest slightly, pride gleaming in his eyes. "Noah is a true gentleman, no doubt about it." Mr. Williams' words cut through the air like a knife, his voice carrying a pridefulness that was difficult to ignore.

"Please, let's not do this here. Let's consider Mia's wellbeing," Avery begged, her voice laced with concern for her sleeping daughter. "Can't we put our differences aside for tonight, for her sake?"

"You always know how to stand up for your pathetic excuse of a husband," she snapped, her eyes narrowing in disdain. "I'll tolerate this lowlife's presence for now, since he won't be a part of this family for much longer. Noah will prove his worth, as he always does, and Jeremy will be left with nothing but memories of a Williams warming his bed at night. Disgusting!" Mrs.willaims scoffed, the venom in her tone almost noticeable.

Avery's tone was dismissive as she questioned her grandparents' motives.

"You've already visited Mia this morning. Why did you come back?"

Mr. Williams, oblivious to his granddaughter's lack of enthusiasm, continued in a cheerful voice.

"Oh, my darling daughter, Noah took us to De Heavens Five Star Restaurant. What an experience!" His excitement fell on deaf ears, as Avery's expression remained impassive, clearly unimpressed by the news.

Avery's voice was like ice as she spoke to her grandparents. "Then you should be home, enjoying the afterglow of your wonderful experience," she said, her words clipped and cold.

Mrs. Williams' expression was one of contempt as she replied.

"Yes, we are headed there soon. Your husband could never understand what it means to live a life of luxury. He's too busy wallowing in his own mediocrity." She paused, a cruel smile playing on her lips as she continued, "We brought some food from De Heavens Five Star Restaurant.Noah insisted that you deserve the best, regardless of the cost," Mrs. Williams continued, her words dripping with sarcasm. "He ordered the finest recipes, dishes that are beyond your husband's wildest dreams. You can feed that lowlife from it if you want. After all, it's the closest he'll ever get to tasting such indulgence."

Jeremy's voice was laced with barely-contained fury as he responded. "Thank you for your concern, but my wife is not hungry," he said, his words filled with resentment. "And if she is, I'll take her to the same restaurant and buy the entire building for her if that's what she wants."

Mrs. Williams and her husband erupted into mocking laughter, their voices ringing through the room with a cruel mockery of Jeremy's bold statement.

"In your wildest dreams!" Mrs. Williams choked out. "You couldn't even afford to take your daughter to a decent hospital. What makes you think you could ever afford the likes of De Heavens Five Star Restaurant, let alone buy the entire building?"

Even though the hospital Mia was admitted was one of the most expensive. For those with the means, the hospital was a mere stepping stone on the way to the highest rank of medical care.

"My husband is right," Avery said, her voice steady and resolute. "I'm not hungry. You can take the food back and give it to the maid on my behalf, or perhaps feed it to your dogs." Despite the rumbling of her stomach, Avery stood her ground, determined to deny her grandparents and Noah the satisfaction of seeing her yield.

As if to drive home the point, Mrs. Williams extracted one of the food packs from the bag she had brought, holding it up for Avery to see.

"Did you not hear your grandfather?" she mocked. "This food is from De Heavens, the finest restaurant in the entire country. Every average man can only dream of dining at such a place."

She waved the package in front of Avery, her eyes glinting with malicious pleasure. "This diamond seal," she said, pointing to the symbol embellished on the front, "indicates that this is one of their exclusive secret recipes. Only the wealthiest and most influential can afford such a meal," Mrs. Williams continued. "I doubt that your husband has ever tasted such extravagance in his life."

The food that Mrs. Williams held aloft was not just any dish. It was a highly exclusive "special dish food," a unique creation developed by De Heavens, crafted from rare and expensive ingredients and reserved for only the wealthiest and most elite clients. It was a status symbol, a privilege that only a select few could afford.

De Heavens, like many high-end restaurants, had a hierarchy of private rooms, each more exclusive than the last.

"The Bronze Box" was the most basic of these rooms, followed by "The Gold Box," which was more luxurious. But for those with deep pockets and high connections, there were even more exclusive options. the "Diamond Box," the "Royal Box," and, at the very pinnacle, the "Heavenly Box."

"I don't care if it came from the Emperor's own table," she said, her tone like ice. "I'm not hungry, and I don't need your charity."

Mrs. Williams' Mockery deepened, but before she could say a word, Jeremy stepped forward, his voice low and commanding.

"If you so desire, my love," he said, his words ringing with determination, "I will take you to De Heavens and order for you the most exquisite meal they have to offer. One adorned with the Heavenly Seal, reserved only for the most esteemed of guests, not the mere Diamond Seal that doesn't begin to match your caliber."
