Chapter 4 - Who paid the bills?

Avery's heart pounded in her chest as she heard a knock at the door of the hospital waiting room. She had been waiting for hours for any news from Jeremy, and her anxiety was overwhelming. She hoped that the knock would be Jeremy, coming back with the money needed for their daughter's treatment. But to her surprise, when she opened the door, she saw her grandparents and Noah standing there, looking concerned.

"Good morning, Grandpa," she said, her voice trembling.

"What in the world has happened to you, dear?" her grandmother asked, her gaze scrutinizing the signs of stress etched on Avery's face. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

"I'm fine, Grandma," Avery tried to reassure her, but her words lacked conviction. She felt like she was about to burst into tears at any moment, and she was afraid that if she started talking, she wouldn't be able to stop.

"No, you're not fine," her grandfather said, his voice stern. "Ever since you married that man, you've changed. You're not the same girl you used to be. You're a shadow of your former self."

"How did you know we were at the hospital?" she blurted out. "And where is Jeremy? Did he tell you we were here?"

Her grandfather gave her a sympathetic look. "No, he didn't. We heard about what happened through other channels. We came as soon as we could. Now, tell us what's going on."

"I'm guessing you heard about us through Ava," Avery said, her voice tinged with bitterness. Ava was her best friend, and she knew everything about what had been going on. She had always hated Jeremy.

"So, where is that good-for-nothing husband of yours?" her grandmother demanded, her voice heavy with contempt. "What kind of man leaves his wife in a time like this?"

"He left to see you," Avery said, her voice shaking with emotion. "We were desperate for money to pay for Mia's medical bills, and he was supposed to ask you for a loan. we had no other choice. Mia's life is more important than anything else. Even though she hated the fact that Noah was there, Mia's life was more important than whatever resentment she had toward him.

"Poor man. I guess the pressure of the bills got to him," Noah said, a hint of disdain in his voice. "But to run away from his family like that? That's a cowardly act if you ask me."

"Don't talk about my husband that way," Avery said, her voice sharp with anger. "You have no idea what he's been through. He's been under a lot of stress, and he's just trying to do what's best for our family. You have no right to judge him like that."

"You're acting like Noah's words aren't true," her grandmother said, her tone stern and disapproving. "If you had just listened to us and married Him, you wouldn't be in this situation. Instead, you chose to go your own way, and now you're struggling to pay your daughter's medical bills."

"Noah has everything you need to have a comfortable life," her grandfather interjected. "He comes from a well-off family with businesses all over the world. What more could a woman ask for?but I guessed you've made your choice,"

"Avery," Noah said, his voice gentle and full of emotion. "I've always loved you, and I still do. You can get a divorce from your husband and we can be together. I'll take care of everything, including your daughter's hospital bills. I can give you the life you deserve, the life you've always wanted."

"How dare you think that money is all that matters!" Avery said, her voice shaking with anger. "You're so materialistic, so shallow. There are more important things in life than money, and I can't believe you don't understand that."

Noah looked taken aback, and his eyes darkened. "I'm just trying to help you," he said, his voice low and cold. "You're the one who's being stubborn and refusing to see the reality of your situation."

Avery could feel her frustration turning to fury. She couldn't believe that Noah would make such a selfish demand, insisting that she marry him before he would help with her daughter's medical expenses. It was a cruel and heartless request, and she couldn't believe he would be so callous.

"What has this man done to you, Avery?" her grandfather said, his voice filled with disappointment. "Why can't you see that this is an opportunity to make things right? You disgraced our family's name, and now you have a chance to redeem yourself. I don't understand why you're so stubborn about this." Avery's eyes welled up with tears as she felt the weight of her grandfather's words.

Noah had always been the one they wanted her to marry, regardless of her own feelings. They believed that love could be developed over time, as long as there was enough money and stability. But for Avery, love was something more. She wanted the fairy tale kind of love that her parents had shared before they passed away.

"Your father died an unhappy man because he chose love over practicality, and we're afraid you're making the same mistake," her grandmother said, just as the door to the waiting room opened and the chief medical consultant walked in with two other doctors.

The consultant was an elderly man with a kindly face and a comforting presence. He was followed by two younger doctors, both of whom looked serious and concerned.

"Hello, Mrs. Avery," the chief consultant said with a warm smile. "We're going to be moving your daughter to the VIP ward, where she will receive the best possible care. Her treatment will begin right away."

For a moment, Avery and her grandparents just looked at each other in shock and disbelief. Finally, Avery spoke up. "Doctor, I think there must be some mistake," she said, her voice quivering. "We haven't been able to pay the first bill, so we're not sure how we can afford the VIP treatment."

The consultant smiled reassuringly. "I understand your concern, but there is no mistake. The treatment has been fully covered by a benefactor,"

"Are you sure?" Avery asked, her voice shaky with emotion. "I'm not sure I understand what's happening."

The consultant nodded. "I assure you, there is no mistake. You're very important to us, and we want to make sure you receive the best possible care," the consultant explained. "That's why we're going to make sure you have the VIP treatment."

"I wonder who could be generous enough to cover the cost of such a treatment," the grandfather said thoughtfully.

"Not even in a million years would Jeremy be able to come up with the money for this treatment," his wife said, her voice dripping with disdain. "He's a ne'er-do-well, always mooching off of others and never doing anything to improve his own situation. He's not capable of such."

The grandparents turned to face Noah as if they had just been jolted by a bolt of lightning.

"Noah, did you... did you pay for the treatment?" the grandmother asked, a note of pride in her voice. "You did this for us. Thank you,"
