Chapter 2

In the elevator, Nathan stared at the tinder in his hand and recalled what had happened between them. Upon contemplating how he intended to spend the remainder of his life with Katrina, he felt despondent. He believed that a contented existence could be easily achieved through material possessions, affection, and care. However, Karina confronted him with the harsh truth and taught him that money is everything in this world—either to sustain one's physical existence or to allow a relationship to progress.

The elevator doors opened for him with a ding, and as soon as he exited the lift, he encountered two unanticipated individuals who were approaching him on foot. Karina’s mother, Catherine, and her brother, Kyle Blackwood, were there.

"Why are you both here, Mom, Catherine, and Kyle?" Nathan questioned them with respect.

“Did you and my daughter Karina get divorced or not?” Catherine didn’t intend to beat around the bush. Nathan was taken aback upon hearing it; he had not anticipated her response in this manner, and it caught him off guard.

Nathan either responded to her or questioned himself, "I do not understand what I did to cause her to take this action." He did not comprehend why she did so.

Catherine scoffed. "Who knows what you did behind her back to cause her to take this action?"

"I did nothing during the period of my notice," Nathan responded.

"Had you not provoked her with your actions, she would not be proceeding in this manner. We have been pleading with her for a long time to divorce you, but she has consistently disregarded our requests," Catherine clarified.

“But-” Nathan was cut off in the middle by her mother, Catherine.

"End of discussion; simply inform me whether you have affixed your signature to the agreement stipulating a sum of three million US dollars." Catherine didn’t show any pity or any type of emotion in her face.

"I have signed the document, but I did not accept a single dollar in compensation," Nathan candidly responded to her mother.

“He is lying, mom, who will reject three million dollars and that too, a useless person like Nathan would take it in before hand,” Kyhle interfered.

Nathan never expected that he would undergo such treatment the minute he signed the divorce papers. Despite being cognizant of the lack of regard he has in their hearts, he failed to anticipate this would come to light.

“I don’t have any need to lie. Nothing was taken," Nathan responded.

"I have no confidence in you," Catherine replied contemptuously. Her words are like a blade swiping through his heart but he kept those in control.

Nathan advised them to "confirm with your daughter who was upstairs," but they both regarded him with contempt and scoffed, "You do not need to say anything to us about what to do."

"He refuses to say this, mother.” Catherine immediately agreed with Kyle's suggestion, "Let us examine him." When Kyle advanced to inspect Nathan, Nathan reclined.

Nathan attempted to halt Kyle by saying, "Kyle, you are going too far; this will not benefit either of us."

“I don’t care about it but it would definitely make good for me,” Kyle replied and caught hold of him.

Nathan, who was experiencing such humiliation, endeavored to endure it and prevent a dispute from arising between them. Due to his enduring affection for his wife, Karina, he refrained from undertaking any action that might cause her heartache.

Kyle was disheartened when he discovered nothing in his pockets after he had begun to examine them. As he was examining the pocket of his shirt, he caught sight of tinder and removed it immediately.

"This is a pendant ring, correct? It belonged to my sister, correct? What were you doing with it? You stole it, correct? Kyle inquired as he grasped the item in his hand.

"It is mine, Kyle; it was an inherited family possession. Return it to me," Nathan admonished Kyle in an icy-cold tone that caused chills to run down his spine. Upon hearing it, Kyle became frightened but managed to remain awake. He stated,

"Since you have been subsisting on my sister's earnings for the past three years, this will suffice to recoup the funds we squandered on you."

“No, you are not allowed to take it,” Nathan rejected.

“Oh, anyway, I am going to keep that with me. What would you do and mom, how much do you think we can earn by selling this?” Kyle placed the tinder in front of Nathan and started playing with it. He acted like he dropped it wantedly in front of Nathan, and when Nathan was about to hold it, Kyle laughed seeing his actions and said,

"Oh, my poor Natah, do you think I really dropped it? Here it was." Kyle pointed at the tinder in his hand, which infuriated Nathan. His chin muscles tightened, his hands were formed into fists, which revealed his nerves and his eyes turned red, indicating his anger.

"What were those looks? "How dare you look at me with that attitude?" Kyle exclaimed, about to punch Nathan in the face, when Nathan caught his hand in midair and delivered a hard slap that caused Kyle to retreat far away. When Kyle tasted the metallic flavor in his mouth, he spat out the blood and then his teeth. Catherine became even more terrified upon witnessing the horrifying scene unfold before her eyes. She began yelling for assistance immediately, pleading with someone to save her son Kyle; otherwise, Nathan would take his life.

After listening to her scream, guards came there, and upon locating them, Catherine said,

“Beat him and throw him out. He is killing my son.” The guards were aware of Nathan's reputation and status, so in an attempt to gain Catherine's favor and secure a promotion, they approached him. The sharp voice of a woman dissuaded them just as they were about to hinder him. All the guards were astounded to see attractive and seductive women in the direction of the voice. The women came there along with her bodyguards and said,

“Mr. Nathan, I will handle this; please do enter the car.”

Nathan only looked at the girl for a moment before turning to Kyle and warning,

"I am granting you three days to return that Tinder to me; failure to do so will result in circumstances considerably more dire than this."

After warning him, Nathan walked away from there and entered the car without much deliberation. The guards were terrified after seeing the bodyguards who accompanied her because they had already identified them as the Smith family’s bodyguards who were specially trained. The girl was none other than Gwen, the eldest daughter of the Smith family, who ruled over a vast business empire. After taking a look around, she walked away with her bodyguards and into the car, which then drove away.

Karina reached downstairs after her work and was astonished to see the condition downstairs.

“What happened?” Karina inquired after casting a look at Kyle.

"Your husband had beaten your brother because he was a jerk. I always warned you about his true nature, but you never believed me," Catherine grumbled.

“I know he won’t do any of these things. What did you  do?"Karina questions her brother.

“After looking at your brother, how can you ask like this?” Catherine scoffed and looked at the guards. They knew right away who was responsible and followed her mother, telling her that Nathan planned everything and would have killed her if they were not here.

"And he went with a girl," Catherine said, adding fuel to the fire.

Karina doesn't want to believe them but after looking at the reality that was in front of her eyes and knowing that he went along with a girl, she thought she was wrong about him. Karina never wanted to divorce but Alex, who was trying to take over her business, could harm Nathan to any extent, so to save him, Karina planned a temporary divorce with Nathan.
