Chapter 1: Why Is the World so cruel

   On a gloomy night, the trembling sound of thunder resonated in the atmosphere, and rain fell towards the ground, landing on rooftops and the smooth ground littered with junk.

   In this dark and rainy night, Maverick, who works as a cleaner in a bar, gently walked on the street as he approached his house.

  It wasn't really his house but his home, the house where he, his sister and parents lived in for the past one year.

   Maverick's parents, Mr. Donald Michelson and Mrs. Chloris Michelson were weak and unable to work because of some disaster that they've suffered in the past. His sister, Melisa, was just twelve and was too young and tender to do any job.

    Maverick had been the one working to take care of his family. He had to face all kinds of troubles, harsh and hostile environment just to take care of his family.

   As he continued to walk on the street, Maverick perceived that the normally bustling street, no matter the occasion, was strangely quiet and devoid of anyone.

     The doors were shot and he couldn't see a sign of a single person outside, this anomaly didn't bother Maverick much though, he continued walking along the street until he finally reached the entrance to his home.

    Maverick's home was a small wooden bungalow that looked very ordinary. However, it held all of his best memories in this dark post-apocalyptic world where everyone had to do the unthinkable in order to survive.

    Everything was normal in this world until five years ago when spirit energy appeared on the world leading to various catastrophes like people vanishing into thing air, beasts mutating and become extremely dangerous, the dead bodies of both man and beast mutating and becoming zombies that wreaked untold havoc.

  These calamities led to great changes for humanity. In the span of two years, nearly seventh per cent of the humanities population was annihilated.

  Thanks to some special humans who rose up during the apocalypse by attaining extraordinary power by absorbing spirit energy, the small portion of humanity's population which survived managed to fight off the calamity and create few safe cities where every human lives in today.

  As Maverick approached the door to his home, he suddenly noticed that the door was actually opened into a small slit, and from that slit blood started to slowly trick out.

    Maverick trembled, and his heart started beating intensely at the sight of the blood tricking out from the narrow slit on the door.

  Numerous anxious thoughts soon crammed his head as he imagined the unthinkable things that could have happened to his precious family.

  "What is happening here? Why is there blood trickling out from the door? Could anything have happened to Melisa, Dad, and Mom?"

  "No, something must be wrong here?, why would anything happen to them, I have worked so hard all these years doing lots of hard jobs to make sure that their all fine, how can anything happen to them"

    " Could it be that Daniel is responsible for this? After all, he told me that he'll get revenge on me for stealing his job. Could he have done something to my family?"

    With his body still trembling from uncontrollable emotions, Maverick put aside his chaotic thought and finally widened the gap in the door and…..

  As soon as he opened the door, Maverick was greeted by a sight that made him widen his eyes in terror. His greatest fear has come to pass.

     In front of Maverick was a disoriented living room that was filled with lots of broken stuff, in the middle of the living room was a middle aged woman dressed in an ordinary dress who laid lifelessly on a broken table.

  Blood tricked out of her mouth, and a long knife was impaled unto her chest from which a fountain of blood pore out from, glazing the floor of the building with crimson colour.

  "Mom!" A loud screen tore out of Maverick's mouth as he rushed toward the body of the dead woman with a knife impaled on her chest.

 She was his mother, Mrs. Chloris Michelson is one of the reasons he had struggled so much in this dark post-apocalyptic world.

    Maverick quickly knelt down and grabbed the body of his dead mother. Her dead body was totally cold without any sign of life, without the warmth he usually felt every day in this house.

   "Mom, what happened to you! Why did this happen! Why is the world so cruel to me!" Maverick screamed, tears tricking out of his eyes as he stared at the cold and pale face of his dead mother. Deep pain filled his heart as if numerous needles had been ruthlessly stabbed into it.

    As he held his mother, Maverick was in so much pain, but along with that pain was a rising murderous intent that evolved from the deep pain.

    Never in his life had Maverick felt the urge to kill so intensely, the urge to make anyone responsible for this pay, to make them die a terrible death that was far worse than what they did to his mom.

       After letting out cries of anger, Maverick gently dropped his mother's lifeless body and went to the other rooms to check up on his dad and younger sister.

  When he reached the door, Maverick stopped and closed his eyes and deep in his heart, he prayed that he shouldn't see a similar scene with that of his dead mother, that his father and sister, the only family he had in this world are still alive.

  A rustling sound reverberated as the door to the room was opened, revealing a simple room to Maverick.

   The room had plain white walls and a single window. In the corner, there was a small desk with a comfortable chair and a neatly made bed.

  All this didn't catch Maverick's attention except for the body of a middle-aged man dressed in a t-shirt and a trouser who was hanging on the wall with five knives impaled into his body.

    One knife slashed into his skull, and the others were impaled into his hands and legs. At the sight of this scene, Maverick's mind exploded with uncontrollable emotions.

   His body trembled, and he nearly went to his knees. An incredible grief filled him, but this time, he didn't scream out like before. However, the murderous feeling in his heart drastically amplified
