Chapter 7 A street beggar for a husband

Warren got slammed at the door before he even entered the Lance family mansion.

"Is that the delivery man for the pizza?" Sawyer's sister-in-law mocked looking at Warren's old trousers and shirt that didn't harmonise with their lavish home.

Sawyer bit down on her crab in the fork when she threw a gaze up to see Warren. He quietly darts to the pull-out seat beside his wife. "I'm sorry I couldn't get here on time, there was traffic on the road."

Sawyer kept quiet as she bit on her food overlooking Warren's explanation. Warren keeps the box of wine beside him. he thought since he became the Lance son in law a small gift from him would create a sensation after all Sawyer approach that night made him angry and wander off the cliff to end his life, that was the terrible and memorable night of his life. he thought when he raised his hand to get the cutlery.

"See them, what do I call this, he shamelessly sits beside you, Sawyer you should take a picture together." Her siblings mocked.

"what are you? a world record breaker?"

"Sawyer just wants to break the Lance record by marrying a half-man."

"Half man? That is a cruel thing to say." Sawyer looked up to meet her sister-in-law's gaze, Sadie then clicked her glass with a spoon. "He's a nobody! Suits him better," she ridiculed.

Warren kept his lip glued to the roof of his mouth. Everything they said fell on deaf ears.

Moments later Mr Oliver Lance was spotted walking out of the house without beating an eye in their direction.

"Grandpa, have you heard your favourite granddaughter got married to a loser."

Oliver Lance clenched his hand by his side. "What is this fool doing here!" He yelled walking towards the table.

Everyone quivered, including Jake that is running behind him like a puppet couldn't hold his stance.

"Father, we told Sawyer to invite her husband, she's part of the family and so is her husband."

Grandfather Oliver hit his hand on the table. "I made it strictly clear I will be having dinner with my family what are outsiders doing here!"

"I didn't know it would get you angry."

"Sawyer made her choice! She is supposed to strike a deal with Harlan, the Welsh group! She made me start from scratch because of this fool and you expect yourself to be part of this family? Never! This gathering is for people that are my blood."

Grandfather Oliver concludes as he strode towards the table. Sawyer bent her head low to the table unable to say anything, when she opened her mouth tears rolled down her eyes.

"There is no room for remorse." Jake beamed, Sawyer threw him glares, death glares to keep his tongue glued to his mouth.

"What if Sawyer can make up for her crimes, what if she strikes the deal will that make you accept her into the family?" Warren said softly for the first time, everyone gasped,

"Look who is talking! What can you do other than run errands for the rich?"

Warren looked down, he could pull strings with his influence, give contracts to whoever he wanted and terminate the deal at the same time.

"What are you saying Warren, you should keep quiet," Sawyer advised. "Grandfather doesn't like intrusion."

Her family had always persuaded her to marry the proud chariot, Hans Vincent but Sawyer sees nothing worth the waste in him, "I made my choice father, Warren here isn't completely useless you see, he will get a job."

"Looks aren't everything, and besides your grandfather has cut ties with you, do you think your savings are enough to aid you through." Her mother scolded.

Sawyer looked down, the door open and a broad-shouldered man who reeked of proudness walked into the room with a smile on his face, he directed his gaze to Grandfather Oliver. This man Hans Vincent had his head curled back, his chin well augmented and his attitude fierce.

Warren's mind flies back to the event with Kaylani, and how she left him for Floyd, history is about to repeat itself, and this makes Warren anxious. But maintaining his calm, the Lance family will not look twice at an ordinarily dressed man like him on the street as they did just now.

"Oh my! When did you come back from your trip, Hans?"

He ignored his mother-in-law and walked towards Sawyer with the publication in his hand. "What is the meaning of this? Sawyer, you got married to a nobody over the weekend?" He scolded.

Sawyer stayed back, she never wanted this, her engagement to her boyfriend was organized by her family simply because they figured he would be a great pillar to their rise in the social class. Sawyer put back on her throat, noticing her nervousness Warren stepped forward. "Can't you see you're scaring her?

"Who let this beggar into the Lance family? Did someone order pizza and decide to settle in cash?" He belittled, smoke of annoyance filled Sawyer, her family knows Hans is proud but they won't just talk because they were blinded by gaining a chance with the Welsh group through him.

He looked around mocking Warren, Jake muffed in laughter. He got what he wanted, the picture of Sawyer with Warren he took that nugget and turned Sawyer into a timid little girl that excited his heart.

He wrapped his hand around Sawyer's arm, he felt a stop on his wrist. "I'm Warren her husband and you have no right to touch her against her will."

"Sawyer! Tell me it's a lie. You married a good for nothing?" Hans laughed pointing fingers at Warren screening him from head to toe.

"Yes, we're married, got a problem with that?"

"If you had married me your life would have been a lot better."

Warren kept his stance his glare fearless, who is this man that doesn't know the calibre of people he's dining with? Warren dropped his hand.

"Grandpa, I wanted to support Sawyer with her deal with the Welsh group, I have a strong connection but she betrayed me and married a good for nothing. Anyway, I thought he was something I could stand but this loser looks rugged and has nothing to offer but a bad reputation, Sawyer can divorce him and marry me instead, I don't mind the media."

Grandfather Oliver's eyes flash open, he never thought of this, if he will accept her despite her flaws then the made a mistake by marrying his grandfather off to the scumbag before him.

"Do you mean it, son?"

"Of course!" He nodded. "And I picked a souvenir for you on its way coming, please this is the rare wild ginseng leaf tree it's good for your health."

Grandfather exclaimed. "I knew you would make a good son-in-law, the last time I tasted this exquisite tea was years ago."

Jake noticed his father's fondness and snapped. "Will that restore Sawyer as the manager of the company?"

"Of course, if she marries him and strikes a deal with the Welsh, why wouldn't she? Anyone that can strike a deal with Welsh group doesn't matter if it is your ten-year-old son." Jake grinds his teeth in a form of annoyance and disgust, that will make his efforts fruitless, he scans his head for ideas.

Warren finds this interesting. Sawyer moves towards the staircase, she's sick and tired of her ex-fiance, he's a proud bastard who always regards himself, "Can you stop showing your proud face to my family?"

The Lance family are second-class citizens with Hans changing their life whole he was dating Sawyer they skyrocketed to lower first-class citizens.

"Hans is a generous man, the whole Vincent family are." Sawyer's grandmother, Elaine contributed. "Sawyer count yourself lucky."

"Grandfather-in-law, I brought a gift for you, it's a century's worth of wine with a mind-blowing taste." Warren cuts in. The whole Lance family busts into laughter carrying the leather from the table.

"Warren is cooking up stories that don't suit his personality."

Jake dashed to the table, he quickly opened the wine to divert his grandfather's attention from considering Hans Vincent's proposal.

"What!" He exclaimed. "Mediocres like you always have a way of creating fake out of the original." He shakes the wine bottle. His grandfather collected it and went through it.

"It's not fake. It's real Chateau–"

"He stole it! Warren is a poor man who is living on end means."

"Street beggars like him are pickpockets. Divorce him before he sells the Lance family out."

Sawyer holds Warren's hand. "Just stop! Warren is my husband, I won't divorce him."

Warren sighed quietly inside his heart, everyone has always looked down on him even to the extent they thought his gift to his in-laws was stolen what will they do when they find out that he is the owner of the Welsh group?

He had just come into the spotlight and learnt everyone fighting for the position, what if someone from the group targeted him aside from the few loyalists he has got?

Staying humble and in the dark was the best option left for him at the moment.

"Father-in-law, I'm sorry for all the trouble I have caused tonight."

"Trouble? You came to us with a stolen wine and all you do is apologise what if they come tracking it, what will the whole of Cleveland say of us? Can't you have the slightest decency and get out of our house."

"Mother, Warren is your son-in-law, how can you say that to him."

"Warren let's go inside, leave mother it's too late to be going through the estate alone."

Sawyer leads Warren through the staircase to her room. Warren is shocked by her attitude, by what is wrong with Sawyer when a super rich son of the Vincent family is chasing after her and she chooses to be with him despite the trouble. He stared at her back while he laid a mat on the floor, 'Sawyer, I will make the whole of the Lance family bow down to you, I am Lord Welsh.'

"Tomorrow I have few friends I can put in words with then we will get our own house and find you a job." Warren lay on his side and smiled into the night. He has got to be the luckiest man on earth right now, life has a funny way of giving him everything tenfold but no one must know his true identity, not yet.
