When he got back up and raised his head back up, he saw that everyone was looking at him, the salesperson, Macy, and the footballer. When they saw him, the young couple started laughing, and he felt color rush into his cheeks.
They walked over to him, her hand wrapped in his and poked at his cheek. “Jason? Come on now. You're too poor for this place, what are you looking for? ”
The footballer went to stand behind him, and grabbed him by the arm. “Come on, get out. We don't want you stealing anything, do we?” he asked, getting a chorus of no from the women.
“I have just as much of a right to be here as you!” he heard himself saying. And it was true. These people didn't know what funds he had, yet they had the gall to treat him like a common thief. He had started to question what he had ever seen in Macy.
“No, you don't. You're insulting us with your presence, what do you even want here? Please leave!”
“I will not! I have money now, I have a right to be here too!”“Remember when I told you I wanted a 2500 dollar bag and you had to save for it? You didn't even have enough as at the time that we were together. And that was yesterday. Nothing had changed.
He felt the burn of that insult down to the hairs on his chin, and he couldn't stand for it. Wanting to maintain a little of his dignity, he turned to the salesperson and muttered. “Give it.”
“Give what? ” she asked, a sardonic grin on her face.
“The bag.” Grudgingly, the salesperson gave him the bag to examine, and he palmed it.Truthfully, it was pretty, and was probably overpriced, but his dignity was on the line. Besides, it would make a great gift for Ashley. “I'll take it.”
“Look tough guy, ” she said, laughing, “I have humored you, but your prank is no longer funny to me. These people know you, and they have said that you do not have any money.
I know paupers like you, you come in here to steal, don't you? You have been here for almost an hour now, and you still haven't found anything to buy. Why do you want to waste anyone's time?”
Again, he made the request, keeping his emotions in check. “Can I please have this bag?” He seemed to have stepped into the wrong store, because all he had met here was ridicule.
But he was tired. Of being mocked by Macy, or having to be in the same place as that football player, of the mockery and disrespect he had gotten from the salesperson, that he had been getting all his life.
He handed her his card and the purse, and she stretched out her hands to take them, her breath catching in her throat. He was unsure what that was about, but at least he was one step closer to leaving the sore behind.
Macy sniggered at him the moment that his card was accepted from him, and laughed as the salesperson walked over to the countertop to ring up his purchase.
The footballer who was beside her found it funny too, and they elbowed each other while making snide remarks as the salesperson placed the card on the countertop beside the machine.
“Babe, she's wasting her time, and she'll soon see it,” laughed Macy.
“Yeah, she'll see real soon.”“Exactly!” To the salesgirl, she said, “the card won't work anyway. He's just pretending to be rich, he's a broke buy, and you'll see it. If the payment fails, I think you should throw him out of your store.”
Jason pretended as though he could not hear her, because he had a feeling that she was baiting him, wanting him to react. The salesgirl had found the machine and was trying to earn him a last time.
“This bag costs $3700. Do not waste my time and yours if you cannot afford it. Just let me know and I-”
“Do you not know how to use the machine? I want that bag.”Everyone in the store kept their eyes on his black card, waiting for the payment to be declined. Macy and her new boyfriend seemed to be all too excited, and Jason felt himself getting irritated.
How had he ever liked her? Of all the girls at the school, he had chosen her. Had he been so blinded by her beauty that he didn't see that she was a lot like a snake?
Just then, the machine let out a loud ding! and spit out an approval receipt. Everyone's mouths hung open, especially the salesgirl. She had been so disrespectful to him, unwarranted, and now that she could see that he had the money to spend in her store, her attitude had changed.
He could laugh, but he decided not to, maintaining his composure and dignity. Immediately, she changed her demeanor towards him, all smiles and cheekbones.
Her face was permanently frozen into a smile when she asked, “would you like it wrapped or not, sir?”
“Wrapped, please.”She worked quickly and diligently packed up the gift, even adding a free bow. Smiling hard enough to split her cheeks, she handed him the packed purse. She refused to even speak to Macy and her boyfriend, and Jason had to bite his tongue.
Money was her master, and of course, if someone seemed to be able to spend even more money, she befriended them. She had not seen anyone buy that purse in one sitting.
They usually all requested for payment plans, but here he was, simply paying the entire bill at once. She had almost kicked him out, and he could tell that she regretted it.
Macy and her new boyfriend stood shell shocked, and he bit his tongue from walking over to them and rubbing in his victory. He accepted his card from the salesgirl and left his new purse on the table, searching for one more thing he could gift Ashley.
He could see the wheels in Macy's head were having a problem with putting 2 and 2 together, and it entertained him a little too much than it should have.
Her dumb jock boyfriend seemed to have been having an ever bigger problem, and was seconds away from drooling. His eyes were wide, and he seemed like he was about to pop a vein.
They probably wanted to ask him how he could afford it. He didn't owe any of them an explanation, but the fact that they couldn't fathom his good fortune entertained him.
Just the day before, he had been poorer than they had thought, and now he was even richer. He was going to give Ashley the perfect purse, because he saw her as kind and deserving.
When they had not moved in a few minutes, he drew the salesgirl's attention to them standing there unblinking.
Macy remained standing in place, her minded wide open and gaping. He would be worried about her, but even in his kindness, he remembered that she was the ex that had broken his heart so brutally a few days before.“You were going to show me your jewelry, right?” he asked the salesgirl, raising a brow. She had gone ahead of him, and was already showing him different things she thought he would like.“Do you like diamonds? Precious stones? I'm sure we could find something special in store for you. Do you have a budget?”At a loss for words, he merely shrugged, choosing to keep browsing. He felt an intense gaze on his skin, and he turned around to find that it was only Macy. Her eyes had softened in a way that they had never softened before, and her eyes had gotten dewy. He felt like she was eyeing him like he was a piece of meat, which made him uncomfortable.“Baby!” she suddenly shrieked, and he looked over to the football player, who was also standing there, expectant. Instead, she w
The manager came back out with the salesgirl, and Jason was overjoyed at the sight of someone else beside the three people in the store. All three of them seemed to have some vendetta against him. She was a lovely looking woman, with short brown hair, and she looked friendly enough.“It's him! That's the thief!”The manager didn't say a word and simply went to the table, picking up the hairpin. “Is this what he stole?”“Yes!”Stole? He had not stolen anything! Why was this happening to him? She set the hairpin down and noticed the other things on the table. She turned sharply to him with a sweat running down her face. “This ring. Is it yours? Oh dear God. I shouldn't have come in to work today.” Jason stood in place, wondering what was going on. He picked up his ring and slipped it on his index finger.“Look, I have already seen enough. I paid for that purse, so if I could just have the box and leave? That would be great. Thank you.He watched the manager blanche white at that sugg
When he got home, his mum seemed to be in a good mood, so he kissed her hello and asked how her day had gone.“Oh, it was okay. I got a call from your father and he seemed Inna dapper mood. I'm assuming he has told you? We're not poor?”“Yeah, he has,” he responded, smiling.“Well that's good, now we don't have to worry and you can quit that god awful job that you have.”“Yeah, that's a plus.”Suddenly remembering something, he tells his mother that he has a party to attend that night with his friends. “It's Ashley's birthday tomorrow, but the party is today. That's what the gift bag is for ”He gestured vaguely at the bag and told her more. “I am going to have to go there because it is the first time I've ever been invited to an event like this.”“Go ahead Jason,” she smiled. “Will you be fine for dinner or should I make you some?”“I'm alright. I have a few hours to kill before the party, should I tell you what happened at the shops?”“I would love that!” she exclaimed, and he told
He went over to the table and set down the gift, noting that it had been an hour and more and more people had shown up to the party. The room was almost full, and he admired the lighting.Someone had gone all out for this party, and he admired their effort. He wondered if it was Ashley herself, then decided against it. They had probably not stressed the birthday girl on her day.Soon she came down the stairs and things went into full swing. The party had poured from the front of the house to the other sides and out on the porch, and kids ran around with punch that he suspected was spiked.Ashley walked up to him and tried to introduce him to her cousin, a girl named Cate. Cate was a pretty girl, and he could admit that himself. She had long blonde hair that she was wearing in a thick braid, and she had angelic blue eyes to match. She looked classy, rich, and he was afraid to say a word to her.Ashley gave him a hard elbow to the side and the words spluttered out of his mouth. “Ow- Hi
“Stop!” yelled Russ. “You can't all possibly be this stupid. This boy cannot afford any of this. He must have stolen it!" A murmur ran out over the crowd, and Jason turned around, stunned. “Those two items look as expensive as all of the other gifts combined. Maybe even ten times more expensive than all of it! Why would you even think this is real?” “What the-” Jason turned around to look at Russ. He had no idea why Russ was telling a lie as grand as that, but he had had it up to his neck. “I didn't steal anything, what's your problem?” “Well, if you didn't steal it, then it's fake.” Ashley was on the stairs with her friends, taking some of her gifts up, so she couldn't defend him, and he knew he couldn't fight all of them off, so he looked over at Macy. She had seen him buying the gifts, she had been in the shop along with her mysterious footballer boyfriend while he made the purchase, surely she would come to his rescue? Apparently not. She looked away and then invited her fo
That week, Jason anticipated every mail delivery that he got, searching for the keys his father had promised to send to him. He had left Ashley's party after wishing her goodbye that first night, and their friendship was flourishing. School was still in session, and although Russ was rude to him, he remained kind and made a few new friends, although he suspected that they were befriending him simply because of his finances. On a Friday, almost a week after the call, he got the keys, tightly wrapped. His mom was downstairs when his package came, and he walked inside the house and handed the package to her after struggling to open it for a while. “Why would dad wrap it so tight?!” he exclaimed, running his hands through his hair.“Well,” responded his mum, using a blade to cut open the pack, “maybe he just wanted it to be safe. Or he shipped it with something else that he didn't want to break. Who knows?”“Nobody but him, I guess. Still it's silly,” laughed Jason, running up the stairs
Chapter 13Together, he and the arrogant man sat there, until he got bored and wanted to walk around. This was a home he had not yet toured, and if he was going to live in it, he was going to walk around. “Look man, I'll be right back. I'm touring the place.”“You? Where is your appointment? I let you stay here as a joke, but without an appointment, I will not permit you to walk around,” said the man, frowning. Supporting their boss, his guards reminded Jason that he was pretty small and could easily be lifted up and out of the home, or beaten into compliance. “Look dude, I don't like to touch little kids but if I have to beat you, I can, and I will,” laughed the first one. “You look malnourished, and I'm sure I can lift you up and toss you out, easy.”“Yeah,” joined in the second guy, laughing with his nose. “you have no appointment, and we really should kick you out. The rule is no appointment, no entry into the house. Do you need any parts of that explained?”“No! I do not need
While Lance continued to yell, the lady asked him to take a seat. “Sit down, Jason. How are you?”“I'm okay I guess. But- did I just hear you say that you are my sister?”“Yes, I am. Is there a problem?” asked the lady, smiling at him.“No, not at all,” he smiled, “The thing is just that you know my name and I don't seem to know anything about you.”“Okay, well hi Jason. My name is Maya, your elder sister. I assure you, there are no more surprises after me. I'm sure Mum and dad told you that you were an only child?”Jason nodded with a faraway look in his eyes. They had told him that he was their only child, but he had early childhood memories of playing with someone. Perhaps it was her. “Did you- did you ever play with me when we were younger? I seem to remember playing with you, but those could be false memories I've created.”“Oh no, we definitely used to hangout, I just left home when I turned 18. I think you were 6 years old then. Now I'm 30 years old, and you're 18. It's tradit
