Items To Purchase

In the first shop he saw, he looked through the windows and saw that they sold dresses. He had no idea what size of dress that Ashley wore, so he couldn't get her a dress.

He moved forward and saw that it was mostly dresses being sold in that part of town. He finally decided to step into one for lack of a better idea. Immediately he walked in, he expected a salesperson to come to his attention.

Yet, nothing of the sort happened. Quickly, he stepped out, overwhelmed. He had noticed that there was a small number of people in the store from the window, but he hadn't thought much of it and had carelessly walked in.

He kept walking until he saw a store that sold women's purses. Purses were safe, right? If he got her a purse, she could use it, and it meant that he didn't have to worry about sizing.

He walked into the shop and was immediately ambushed by a salesperson. It seemed like it was a slow business day, and she was excited to have a customer until she looked at him from top till bottom.

Self consciously, he looked at himself from head to toe, wondering what she had seen that was wrong. He realized that the toe of one of his shoes was scuffed, and he hid it behind his other foot.

“Good morning,” she sneered. “How may I help you?”

“Um, hi. I'm trying to get a gift for my friend. Her birthday is tomorrow, and she likes butterflies and pretty things.”

“We don't have anything within your budget, sir, ” she coughed out, turning her head away to touch an item on display. He could hear the inflection in her voice and he suspected that it was because of how he was dressed.

He knew that he was dressed shabbily, and that was why he was being treated weird. He was used to it, and had been dealing with that from his high school peers, so he barely felt anything from her attitude.

He knew that he should probably work on his appearance, but he wasn't ready to spend any money yet. He would do so later, but shouldn't they be treating him well regardless of what his wallet said?

This salesperson wasn't even looking at him, too focused on snapping he gum and dusting off imaginary dirt from the window display items. He wondered if she would have done the same thing had he been a rich dressed man.

His fingers played with the ring in his pocket, as he tried to speak to her. “I can afford it, I promise. Do you have anything I could give a friend as a birthday present?”

“I don't think you do sir. Is this one of those pranks? If it is, I do not have enough time for this please.”

“I-”

Just then, a couple stepped into the store and passed him, heading straight for the counter. The woman who had been attending to him strode past him and after them, happy to attend to them.

The woman had made a beeline for the purse that was on display on the counter, and he caught a whiff of her perfume as she passed by him.

“Babe, I really want a purse to wear to the party.”

“Of course darling," he said, “get whatever you want, my treat. That's why we're here, isn't it? ”

He stared at their backs while the nonchalant salesperson that had just been talking to him beamed at them and asked what they would like. He couldn't see their faces, but the woman picked up the purse.

“Is that what you want, babe? Of course, you can have it. It's just-” as he peered down at the tag, his eyes widened. “It's not that pretty. Why don't you get another one?”

“What do you mean, babe? It's the latest of its kind, and it's the hottest purse right now. ”

“Yeah,” agreed the salesperson. “It is a lovely colored bag, sir.”

“What if we browse other options? ” he asked, looking away from his girlfriend.

“No, I want this one! It's purple, and it'll match all my cloth options for the party!”

“But babe, I think it'll distract from your pretty face, don't you think so? Why not just get one of these? ” He lifted one of the bags on sale and handed it to Macy.

She took one look at it and immediately set it down. “This is so last season! It's absolutely horrid, and I won't be seen with it.”

“But babe-”

“No!” she interjected.

Bored, Jason shook his head and went looking for pieces he could give Ashley for her birthday.

There was nothing butterfly themed, so he had since given up on that idea. He could not find any jewelry in the shop, but there were a few bracelets, and he spent some time looking at the bracelets.

The salesperson chose that moment to walk over to him, with a smile. “Seen anything you want? Our bracelets are some of the cheapest items we carry in store.”

He waved her away, and exasperated, she walked back to the couple that had entered the couple. Her boyfriend must have said something funny, because just then, she burst into an unladylike laugh.

Upon hearing that laugh, Jason paused. His ex, Macy, was the only person he knew who laughed like that. And even that voice that accompanied the laugh…

It sounded like her voice and the voice of the football player she had cheated on him with. He looked up just as the couple took off their sunglasses, and he realized that he was right. It was his ex-girlfriend and the football player she had cheated on him with.

Upon seeing her face, he remembered everything that she had said to him and he felt anger rise in his cheeks, coloring him red. So not only had she cheated on him and then embarrassed him privately, she had gotten with the guy?

How could he even trust her? If she could cheat with him, why wouldn't she cheat on him? How could the guy not see that he was being used?

The nerve of her. The salesperson noticed the trail of his eyes, and she walked over to him with a snide smile. “That couple is our usual clientele. They can buy everything you can't from this store.”

Jason tugged on his frayed shirt and subconsciously hid his scuffed shoe again. Maybe he should have gone to a clothing store first and changed out of his frayed old shirt and sweatpants.

The quarterback and Macy started to amble over to the counter again, her making a beeline for the purse she had initially chosen. The salesperson walked over to them with a smile and tried to convince the guy to splurge and get the purse.

“Sir, we can set up a payment plan, we know you are good for it. You can get this purse for her, and you ma'am,” she started, turning over to Macy, “you can use it for even longer than your last boyfriend!”

When they all giggled, the bracelet in Jason's hands tumbled to the floor.
